Recent developments suggest that it is time to pay homage, once again, to Yogi Berra, the all-star New York Yankee catcher. His well-known quote serves as the title of this article.
Consider for a moment the following timeline:
June 5, 2013. The Washington Post and The Guardian report the existence of PRISM, a top-secret program under which the National Security Agency (NSA) accesses the private communications of all Google and Yahoo account users and the phone records of Verizon subscribers. Four days later…

June 9, 2013. The Guardian and the Post report that the revelations were made by NSA computer contractor Edward Snowden, who was then in Hong Kong, seeking asylum. Fourteen days later…
June 23, 2013. Snowden boards Aeroflot Flight 213 to Moscow, his ultimate destination, Ecuador. Upon arriving at Sherementyevo Airport, he is prevented from proceeding. His US passport had been revoked. Four days later…
June 27, 2013. President Obama downplays the situation saying,” I’m not going to be scrambling jets to get a 29-year-old hacker.” Four days later…

The Buddha and Sports (Superb Owl, Part 2)

Ashley Wells, Amber Larson, Dhr. Seven, CC Liu, Pfc. Sandoval, Wisdom Quarterly; Ven. Silacara Bhikkhu (A Young People's Life of the Buddha) ORGANIZED SPORTS (PART 1)
Siddhartha: Does he have a concussion? Channa: No, this guy's, uh, never mind (SF).

QB Colbert and a bunch of B's on the gridiron
Siddhartha the Bodhisat (Buddha-to-be) was living the household life, being raised with a great education to become a leader, a prince in the Shakya (Sakya) clan in frontier northwest India (Afghanistan, not Nepal).

That Siddhartha is great!
In Siddhartha's bodily attainments, he was well endowed just as he was in mind (intellect) and character (virtue). The girls, Shakyan cousins and princesses, looked on in admiration to various contests.   Although gentle in manner, he was bold in the practice of all the sports of his country. He was a cool and daring horseman, a marksman with bow and arrow, and an able and skillful chariot-driver. In the latter sport, he won many chariot races against the best drivers in the country. Yet, for all his keenness in trying to win a race, he was kind and compassionate towards the horses who helped him to win so often. He would frequently let a race be lost rather than urge his weary, panting horses beyond their strength.

Not only towards his horses but towards all creatures, Siddhartha seemed to have a heart full of compassion. He was a ruler’s son and had never himself had to suffer hardship or distress. Yet, his kind heart seemed to know by sympathy how others felt when they were afflicted or in pain, whether these others were men or animals. When he was kind to others, as far as he could, he tried to relieve any suffering they were already enduring.

Devadatta utterly ruined himself later.
Once when he was out walking in the country with his cousin Devadatta [brother of his future wife, Bimba, more popularly known as Yasodhara], who had his bow and arrows with him. Devadatta shot a swan that was flying overhead. The arrow hit the swan and it fluttered, painfully wounded, to the ground. Both boys ran to pick it up, but Siddhartha reached it first. Holding it gently, he pulled the arrow out of its wing, put some cool leaves on the wound to stop it from bleeding, and stroked and soothed the hurt and frightened bird. Devadatta was very much annoyed to see his cousin take the swan from him in this way, and he called on Siddhartha to give him the swan because he had brought it down. Siddhartha, however, refused to give him the swan, saying that if the bird had been killed then it would have been his. But as it was alive, it belonged to the one who saved it, and so he meant to keep it. Devadatta maintained that it should belong to him because he tried to kill it.

Devadatta, Siddhartha, and the wounded swan (daobingan/photobucket.com)

Siddhartha proposed and Devadatta agreed that their dispute be settled by a full council [one is reminded of a loya jirga or grand assembly] of the wise men of the country. The council, accordingly, was called and the question put before them. Some in the council argued one way, some in the other, some siding with Devadatta, others with Siddhartha. But at last one man in the council, whom nobody had ever seen before, rose and said: “A life certainly must belong to one who tries to save it; a life cannot belong to one who is only trying to destroy it. The wounded bird by right belongs to the one who saved its life. Let the swan be given to Siddhartha.” All of the others in the council agreed with these wise words, and Prince Siddhartha was allowed to keep the swan. He cared for it until it was cured; then he set it free, letting it fly back to its mates on the forest-lake. More

The Big Game
We'll see who wins at the big festival celebration and feast (daobingan/photobucket)

Once, after practicing with his many Shakya clan cousins, young Siddhartha had great prowess in sports yet remained humble. He engaged in equestrian sports, raced chariots, swam, ran, shot targets, had a white pony/stallion named Kanthaka.

Kanthaka and Siddhartha (BDE)
He was good, and the other boys were jealous. The girls looked on admiringly from the sidelines of their very patriarchal society out in the frontier between East and West along the Silk Road that enriched their land (janapada, the clan's territorial holdings), where Indian traders traveled into Central Asia near Gandhara. The great ancient monuments in Bamiyan were marvels of the day, later converted to representations of their greatest son. (They are so ancient that only Madame Blavatsky has proposed their age and original purpose).

Tired of being trapped by life, Siddhartha lets go of Kanthaka, his royal position, inheritance, and trapping telling his servant Channa to give back to his father (BDE).

Setting out on a quest on Kanthaka (SF)
Like earlier Vedic Brahmanism (pre-Hinduism) later Islam (post-Zoroastrianism) and original Judaism (pre-Christianity), the Buddha never allowed anthropomorphic representations. India did not have them until the Indo-Greco artists in this area started making them, then no one was going to be left behind.

All of the "gods" (devas, brahmas, and avatars) became beautiful ancient Greek-style gods (demigods) and chimera hybrids. Buddhism led the way in spite of the Buddha having it otherwise. When one sees the Buddha one does not see the Buddha, according to the Buddha, because to see the Buddha proper means seeing the Dharma, namely, seeing Dependent Origination.

Kanthaka and Siddhartha (wiki)
But we settle for superficial appearances, and those are greatest in Afghanistan, the original land of Siddhartha's family. The area has always been contentious (as pointed out by Fitzgerald and Gould InvisibleHistory.com), long before the British empire drew the Durand Line or the Soviet Union fought the covert CIA/overt Mujahadeen (God's Army). Russia and America suffered defeat there, like the Greeks (Alexander the Great) and British before them. Of course, we are still suffering defeat, because anyone can conquer Afghanistan, but no one seems to be able to rule and administrate it. Even when a "Taliban" is created out of angry Arab ex-cons from Pakistan and elsewhere, foreigners in tribal Afghanistan, still there is no ruling the wandering bands and their unique ways. Pashtuns are not the indigenous people. It is a country of Gandharans, Shakyans, Hazaras, Tajiks, Kyrgyz, Kazakhs, Turkmens, Pashtuns, Uzbeks, other Central Asians, Indians, Persians, and Iranians.

(K4V) Buzkashi (kok boru) is the Afghan national sport. It is a popular sport
among south Central Asians. Its Turkic name is kökbörü, kök = "blue," börü =
"wolf," denoting the grey wolf, the holy symbol of the Turkic people. More

SAVAGES? Like savages we Americans play to the crippling death on a mock (battle)field tossing around a laced up carcass of an animal. Much like the British play rugby. How strange, then, that we laugh at the Afghan sport of polo using the carcass of an animal. Somehow, they're the "savages." We invade them, engage in war crimes, rape women and children, kill civilians, assassinate by remote control drones, plunder a nation, make war propaganda reels like "Lone Survivor" for the people back home to feel good about war profiteering... and they're savages. Invaders, 1. Conquered, 0. USA! USA! USA! lol

We are currently doing the exact same thing to Afghans in Afghanistan without ever wondering who gets us into these apparently pointless wars (which are not pointless but based on lies that fall apart under scrutiny). "Truth is the first casualty of war." And "those who forget history are condemned to repeat it" as new White House and Pentagon officials seek more adventures in genocide, slavery, and atrocities in our and/or our God's name.

Look, Jo/Jo, I'm movin' further to the right.
G.W. Bush was as terrible liar, whereas President B.S. Obama is a great one. Let's give the devilish man his due: He is a great speaker, a great orator, and a pretty good pacifier. If only what he said were true.

Scahill: "drone president," NSA whitewash
Some is. Unfortunately, it has proven to be the stuff we would never let Dub'ya and Dick get away with -- depriving Americans of peace, privacy, prosperity, civil liberties... What do we get instead?
Shut up, Jeremy, I'm warning you.
Executive order drone assassinations, business-as-usual banking, indefinite detentions, illegal NSA surveillance, Department of Homeland Harassment, police shootings, police beatings, a war on whistleblowers, a crumbling "permanent-war" economy, weather modification, environmental degradation, electrical and frequency pollution, oil and chemical spills, joblessness, corporate control of policies and politics and, well, other than that, everything's great.

Socialist Seattle City Council member Kshama Sawant ripped not only Pres. Obama’s State of the Union speech Tuesday, but the Democrats and Republicans alongside him as he delivered it.

We bow to the same MIC masters.
“We will make progress only on the basis of a fundamental and systematic change,” Sawant said in a response on behalf of the Socialist Party.

“We need a break from the policies of Wall Street and corporate America. We need a break from capitalism. It has failed the 99 percent. Both parties bow down before the free market and loyally serve the interests of their corporate masters, with the only difference being in matter of degree. The political system is completely dysfunctional, and it’s broken.”

The world, the world! (sutra)

Amber Larson and Dhr. Seven (eds.), Wisdom Quarterly; F.L. Woodward (trans.), Kindred Sayings, The Chapter on Channa and Others (Samyutta Nikaya, IV, Pali Text Society)
Saving the world, protesting economic and social injustices, Occupy L.A. (Wisdom Quarterly)

(84) Ven. Ananda came to see the Exalted One [Buddha]...and asked:

"'The world! The world!' it is said. venerable sir, please explain, how far does this saying go?"

"Ananda, what is transitory (paloka-dhamma = bhijjanaka, worldly phenomena, impermanent) by nature is called 'the world' in this noble doctrine and discipline [Arya-Dhamma-Vinaya].

"And what, Ananda, is transitory by nature? The eye, Ananda, is transitory by nature...visible objects... [The same is said for all six senses including the] mind is transitory by nature, mind-states, mind-consciousness, mind-contact [contact = the coming together of sense base, sense object, AND consciousness], whatever pleasure or pain (weal or woe) or neutral state experienced arises owing to mind-contact -- that, too, is transitory by nature.

"Ananda, what is transitory by nature is called 'the world' in this noble doctrine and discipline."

Empty (void)
(85) Then Ven. Ananda...said to the Exalted One: "'The world IS empty! The world is empty!' it is said. Venerable sir, how far does this saying go?"

"Ananda, because the world is devoid of a self or anything belonging to a self (atta-niya, a self's property or possessions), therefore it is said, 'The world is empty.' And what, Ananda, is devoid of a self or what belongs to a self?

"Eye, visible objects, eye-consciousness... mind, mind-objects, mind consciousness are devoid of a self. Ananda, that is why it is said, 'The world is empty!'"

In Brief
Massive, sitting, golden Shakyamuni Buddha statue, Thailand (WQ)

(86) ...Then Ven. Ananda said to the Exalted One: "Well, for me, venerable sir, if the Exalted One would teach me a teaching in brief, a teaching which on hearing from the Exalted One I might dwell solitary, remote, earnest, ardent, and aspiring."

"Now what do you think, Ananda? Is the eye permanent or impermanent?" -- "Impermanent, venerable sir."

"What is impermanent, is that pleasant or painful (weal or woe)?" "Painful, venerable sir."

"Now what is impermanent, painful (woeful, disappointing), changeable by nature, is it fitting to regard that as, 'This is mine. This I am. This is my self'?" -- "Surely not, venerable sir."

"Eye, visible objects, eye-consciousness, eye-contact -- is that permanent or impermanent?" [This same is said of all six senses, types of sense objects, consciousness, and contact between the three].

"Then of what is impermanent, disappointing, and changeable by nature, is it fitting to regard that as, 'This is mine. This I am. This is my self'?" -- "Surely not, venerable sir."

"So seeing, Ananda, the well-taught noble disciple... [is] freed of conceits; one grasps at nothing in the world [does not cling to anything in the world or anything regarding an illusory ego]. Being free from grasping, one is not troubled. Being untroubled, one is by oneself set free. Thus one realizes, 'Rebirth is destroyed, lived is the highest life, done is the task. There is no more of this [suffering] to come.'

"This, Ananda, is the proper approach to the uprooting of all conceits [delusions]."

The Heart of Wisdom Sutra
(COMMENTARY)
The later Mahayana tradition says all of this much more cryptically in the "Perfection of Wisdom" literature (Prajna Paramita), epitomized in the Heart Sutra.

There the Five Aggregates of Clinging are laid bare: form, feeling, perception, formations, and consciousness are empty.

That is, they are devoid of a "self" through and through. Illusion exists. These constituents of being/becoming are generally regarded as a "self" by untaught, ordinary worldlings.

But because they are impermanent and unsatisfactory (disappointing), it is incorrect to regard them as personal. They are impersonal (not-self), beyond our control, brought into transient or momentary existence by causes and conditions. They do not arise by themselves but are brought into being by causes and conditions, which is to say they are dependently originated or arisen.

All of this happens again and again based on ignorance. When liberating-insight arises, enlightenment dawns, and all suffering is brought to an end.

Indiana police and Department of Child Services investigated Ammons' paranormal claims.

Latoya Ammons, mother of possessed (IS)
A woman and three children claim to be possessed by demons. A 9-year-old boy walks backward up a wall in the presence of [two official eyewitnesses,] a family [Department of Child Services] case manager and [a registered] hospital nurse.

Gary police Capt. Charles Austin said it was the strangest story he had ever heard.
  • Police recorded voice of unseen being on helmetcam
(Jan. 28, '14) Child services officers in the US witnessed a 9-y.-o. boy walk
backwards up a wall...possessed by demons, according to official documents

Officer Austin, a 36-year veteran of the Gary Police Department, said he initially thought Indianapolis resident Latoya Ammons and her family concocted an elaborate tale as a way to make money. But after several visits to their home and interviews with witnesses, Austin said simply, "I am a believer."

Siddhartha faced Mara (a "devil") and "demons" (yakkhas) under the Bodhi tree.

Not everyone involved with the family was inclined to believe its incredible story. And many readers will find Ammons' supernatural claims impossible to accept.

Inside haunted house (Gary Police Dept.)
But whatever the cause of the creepy occurrences that befell the family -- whether they were seized by a systematic delusion or demonic possession -- it led to one of the most unusual cases ever handled by the Department of Child Services (DCS). Many of the events are detailed in nearly 800 pages of official records obtained by The Indianapolis Star and recounted in more than a dozen interviews with police, DCS personnel, psychologists, family members, and a Catholic priest.

Brown Lady ghost (answers.com)
Ms. Ammons, who swears by her story, has been unusually open. While she spoke on condition her children not be interviewed or named, she signed releases letting The Star review medical, psychological, and official records that are not open to the public -- and that are not always flattering.

Furthermore, the family's story is made only more bizarre because it involves a DCS intervention, a string of psychological evaluations, a police investigation and, ultimately, a series of exorcisms. It's a tale, they say, that started with flies. More

"Goblins" in Buddhism
Dhr. Seven, Amber Larson, Wisdom Quarterly Wikipedia edit

Ancient Greece, and therefore what we call the "West," inherited its mythology from India

Ancient Greek "Pan"
A kumbhāṇḍa (Pāli kumbhaṇḍa) is one of a group of dwarfish, misshapen "spirits," shapeshifting goblins, gnomes, duendes, cretins, poltergeists, among the lesser earthbound forest entities of Buddhist cosmology and Indian mythology.

Kumbhāṇḍa was a dialectal form for "gourd," who may have gotten their name from being thought to resemble gourds in some way, for example in having big stomachs.

But kumbhāṇḍa can also be interpreted as "pot-egg" -- "pot" (kumbh ) and "egg" (aṇḍa), egg being a common euphemism for "testicle." These creatures were imagined as having testicles "as big as pots," much as salacious Pan is portrayed as constantly erect phallus.

Modern mythical American "Goatmen" (AM)
The terms kumbhāṇḍa and yakṣa ("demon," "ogre") are sometimes used for the same creatre, yakṣa (Pali, yakkha) in these cases is the more general term, including a variety of shapeshifting entities.

Kumbhāṇḍas are classed as earthlings subordinate to one of the Four Great Sky Kings (cāturmahārājikakāyika devas), namely the Regent Virūḷhaka, Guardian of the South. One of the chiefs of the kumbhāṇḍas is called Kumbhīra.

Cops flee Bulawayo, Zimbabwe Police Station after "goblin" emerges from suitcase dumped there by family

Goblin (kumbhanda, duende) drawing
A family from Nketa 7 suburb dumped its tenant's "goblin" at the Tshabalala Police Station, sending cops fleeing in different directions.

The incident occurred at about 8:00 pm on Wednesday. A family that claimed a lodger owned the goblin [kumbandha, duende] brought it to the station in a suitcase.

"We heard some screaming from the charge office and most officers who had knocked off rushed to see what was happening. At first everyone gathered around the suitcase, wanting to see what was inside," said a cop.

Real goblin/kumbhanda killed? (TW)
The officer said a traditional healer who had come with the family opened the suitcase and a weird looking creature jumped out of a bottle that was filled with blood.

"No one told anyone it was time to run. One minute, the charge office was full, the next, it was empty. I think some people went out through the windows because we could not all have fitted through the door. Fat cops and slim cops all ran for their lives screaming," said the cop. More
