U.S. Congress live: Republicans challenge Biden win against Trump in presidential election
Congress was all set for a marathon day as a dozen Senate Republicans planned to challenge state results showing that Democratic President-elect Biden defeated Republican President Trump in the last election.
Normally, the certification by Congress of the Electoral College results is a little-noticed formality, and protests have no effect on it. The election result is unclear. Will Biden's swearing-in as president on Jan. 20 take place?
Earlier, Pres. Trump addressed his supporters gathered on the Ellipse by the White House in Washington D.C. to decry the certification of Biden as the victor in the presidential election.
Officials in D.C. are bracing for street clashes on Tuesday and Wednesday as thousands of pro-Trump supporters arrive waving Confederate flag to protest the election and cheer on challenges of the Electoral College in Congress.
Outgoing Pres. Trump in several tweets has called his supporters to gather in the U.S. capital for “wild” protests, sparking fears of trouble between proponents and critics of the president.
Three groups have submitted permits to the National Parks Service (NPS) to hold demonstrations Tuesday and Wednesday, calling on Congress to move toward overturning the election in Trump’s favor. The NPS has approved all three as of Monday night.
Permits were approved for Women For America First's “March for Trump” at the Ellipse on Wednesday, for the Eighty Percent Coalition's “Rally for Revival” in Freedom Plaza on Tuesday, and for The Silent Majority's protest on the National Mall on Tuesday and Wednesday.
