Celebrating Earth Day with U.S. Poet Laureate Joy Harjo: An American Sunrise
Literary curator Louise Steinman
(Words and Ideas) ABOUT THE PROGRAM: On Thursday, April 22 at 7:00 pm (Pacific), in honor of Earth Day, hear esteemed poet Joy Harjo in a virtual talk read selections from her vast body of work — including from her latest book of poetry, An American Sunrise.

A member of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation, Harjo is the first Native American to be named Poet Laureate of the United States. Joining  her in conversation is literary curator Louise Steinman (pictured at left).

Harjo explores the ways her poems create a dialogue with history: finding blessings in the abundance of her homeland while thrumming with quiet anger at living in the ruins of injustice.

“[Joy Harjo’s] poetry is light and elixir, the very best prescription for us in wounded times.”
— Author Sandra Cisneros
