Psychedelic Cults and Outlaw Churches: LSD, Cannabis, and Spiritual Sacraments in Underground America
“This book not only outlines the history and central principles of well-known modern entheogenic groups like the Native American Church and the Brotherhood of Eternal Love but also pulls from the shadows of history all-but-forgotten characters. Marinacci reproduces intriguing photos from the past as well as discusses the founding scriptures of these farout religions. All future research in this area will owe a debt of gratitude to this unique, well-written volume.” ―Thomas Hatsis, author of LSD―The Wonder Child

Inquiry into Hermetic Mystery and Alchemy

An Initiated Tour of the Western Esoteric Traditions Zoom Lecture by Ike Baker This talk will focus on the history, theory, and practice of the Western Esoteric Traditions, from their earliest iterations, to the form in which they come to us today. Alchemy, astrology, tarot, ceremonial ritual, magic, and more will be examined not only with academic rigor, but from the perspective of an initiate of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, and several other western esoteric initiatic lineages. The incredible tapestry of Western esotericism and its systems of divination, self-evolution, and psychological and cosmological mapping will be explored, and met on its own terms. We’ll look at some of the underlying philosophies, key events, places, and personages of these traditions, as well as dive into the practical applications of the occult arts and sciences. We’ll also examine the cross-pollination of ideas with Eastern traditions.

Take a private tour of the Magical Workshop and Clockwork Automaton Collection of John Gaughan.

Imagine a workshop filled with priceless 19th-century mechanical marvels: intricate, handcrafted automatons of William Tell shooting an apple from his son’s head; of a jeweled peacock that plucks a card from a deck and spreads its tail feathers in delight; of the famed chess-playing Mechanical Turk which astonished Empress Maria Theresa, Napoleon, and Benjamin Franklin. Imagine a treasure chamber filled with more magical delights than the eye can count: a head of Beelzebub from the Theatre Robert-Houdin, a pair of Houdini’s handcuffs, a visiting card from Georges Méliès. Demons and goblins, trees that sprout blossoms, and oranges out of thin air. It's the gossamer stuff from which true magic is conjured.

This impossibly beautiful and wondrous treasure chamber exists, right here in Los Angeles, in the form of the workshop and clockwork automaton collection of John Gaughan. Although not generally open to the public due to his busy schedule and the rarity of his apparatus, Gaughan has generously agreed to open his workshop and collection up for one night for supporters of PRS, including such treasures as the Mechanical Turk, Antonio Diavolo and the Clarinet Player. For those of you who joined us for this incredibly rare opportunity last year, you know what a truly wondrous and magical experience it is! Attendance is limited to 50 people for this private tour.

MODERN OCCULTISM with Mitch Horowitz in person. Horowitz returns to PRS for the launch of his epic new work of history, Modern Occultism — celebrating its release with this special lecture and book signing. He discusses how occult philosophy and its pioneers have dramatically altered modern life and forged a thread of outsider and esoteric insight, practice, and thought throughout Western culture. He explores how our conceptions of the occult were born in late-ancient Hermeticism and permeated the growth of modernity.

Modern Occultism: History, Theory, and Practice In his most vital and comprehensive historical work to date, occult scholar Mitch Horowitzpresents an intellectually grounded exploration of modern occultism in thought and practice, from Cleopatra, astrology, and alchemy to Theosophy, chaos magic, and contemporary witchcraft—and the spiritual revolutions that followed.

The Dark Interval: Letters on Loss, Grief, and Transformation
"When things become truly difficult and unbearable, we find ourselves in a place already very close to its transformation." —Rilke

Gleaned from Rainer Maria Rilke’s voluminous, never-before-translated letters to bereaved friends and acquaintances, The Dark Interval is a profound vision of the mourning process and a meditation on death’s place in our lives.

EXP TV presents The Short Films of Saul & Elaine Bass
Even if one doesn’t know his name, one knows and loves the art of Saul Bass. Ubiquitous and distinctive, Bass’s groundbreaking work as an artist and filmmaker left an immeasurable impact on the realm of the popular arts. However, it’s a criminal misnomer to simply refer to “his artistry” and “his impact” when Saul Bass was half of one of the arts’ greatest power couples, with his wife and collaborator Elaine Bass. Nowhere was their enmeshed creativity more evident than in their collection of extraordinary short films, which they co-conceived, co-directed and co-produced.

Saul Bass: A Life in Film and Design
This is the first book to be published on one of the greatest American designers of the 20th century, who was as famous for his work in film as for his corporate identity and graphic work. With more than 1,400 illustrations, many of them never published before and written by the leading design historian Pat Kirkham, this is the definitive study that design and film enthusiasts have been eagerly anticipating.
