In the north is Mexico, to the southwest is Guatemala, and to the southeast is Belize. This forest spreads as far out as the Caribbean coastline. Centuries ago, it stretched even farther, as far south as El Salvador and Honduras.
This is not any old jungle. It's known as the Forest of the Maya and hides some of the most perplexing mysteries known to humankind. The sheer size of the jungle, with its thick under story of green plants and creeping vines makes the place extremely hostile for the untrained.
For archeologists and geologists, it has been a challenge to find the ancient megalithic sites an extremely advanced civilization left behind almost a millennia ago.
What has already been uncovered is only a fraction of what once were super cities, not just one but thousands of urban centers that supported millions of inhabitants, just like mega cities today but far more advanced than we have ever dreamed.
It may seem crazy to imagine what was going on here, but LiDAR technology is mapping out what is beneath a thick canopy cover. What is being discovered is something that was thought entirely impossible [unless the stories of El Dorado were to be believed].
The latest LiDAR technology allows scientists to map the forest floor without having to disturb or dig anything up. This technology is expensive and used only a handful of times, but what it has done is give scientists a kind of X-ray vision.
