Visit the home of the dalai lamas. There is a famous 1,000-year-old structure in Lhasa, Tibet. From there, Vajrayana Buddhism has its roots and power -- a kind of Vajrayana Buddhist "Vatican." Its "pope," the 14th Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso, was exiled to India with only a dream of returning. As the spiritual and political leader (chief lama and chief of state), a growing movement to repatriate him and win autonomy for the Himalayan region that was once independent Tibet.
