India is the Buddha’s Land: birthplace Orissa

(FreeRepublic.com) The Buddha's new birthplace has been discovered: Kapileshwar, Orissa, India. A team of archaeological experts from Orissa say...

BHUBANESWAR, India -- You don’t tell the Dalai Lama where the historical Buddha was born. But that's exactly what some experts did, only to be gently shown their place.

At a meeting where Tibet's spiritual leader was to speak, some experts attempted the old trick of mentioning that Kapileshwar, on the outskirts of the city, may have been Lord Buddha’s birthplace because Buddhist artifacts have been found at the site. But the Dalai Lama didn’t want to get drawn into the debate.

“Whether Buddha was born in today’s Nepal or this side (India), I don’t know," he said. "Who will decide it, I don’t know.”

The matter requires intensive research, and the real answer may come from the archaeological findings, he said. “If I say Buddha was born here, my Nepalese friends will say Buddha was from Nepal,” he said amidst peals of laughter. Saying that India is the Buddha’s land, he called for extensive research on Buddhism and offered support, too.

He said he would like to return to Orissa to share his ideas, lecture, and at the same time discuss various aspects of Buddhism. The Dalai Lama also hinted at a program of translation of Buddhist texts into the Oriya language and said he would be happy to recommend important books.

  1. I really really don't know who you are! but your blog specially a topic of link (Nepalese Fraud) which drives into the page of http://www.lumkap.org.uk/ sucks. There is no doubt India as a massive country, very old country, Its economic status, political tupsy turvy situation has always overshadowed a small neighbour like Nepal though both country shares almost the same language, culture and all. Indian's huge propaganda media channels, shameless politician have always spread false information about Nepal and Nepalese across the globe. There is very little the Nepalese government been doing to protest that does not mean, the truth could be twisted around. Lord Gautam Buddha was born in Lumbini, Nepal. And there was no present or Past Nepal or whatever. Nepal was always Nepal was never colonized by any other external forces. Recently British Archaelogists have discovered Palace of Buddha's time in Kapilvastu, Lumbini which has troubled India from repicating and constructing Lumbini in India. I am not Indian nor Nepalese, I am British national who's been doing Master's degree in Asian history and mythology and currently researching in Nepal, its just that the blog brought my attention.

  3. Thank you so much Jack, for your kind information which depicts the true words. I am Buddhist Nepali who loves his country so dearly but that does not mean i hate the one who expresses false information without prior knowledge. For true fact, i have always seen and learned that there is Indian dominance over my country and it is obvious to happen. But it seems so freaking false information that Buddha and Everest in pride on India, it really doesn't deserve them and even they know this is false information.
Although, for a certain proof my country does have high number of Buddhist and more number of Dalai lama follower.

  5. First of all, the Dalai Lama is an intellectual lightweight whose grasp over Dharma is laughable. His books et all peddle the same western Buddhist ideas promoter by his western handlers - not real sutra. Also he is not the Pope of Buddhism and what GE says us neither here nor there.
