Coachella 2012

INTERSTATE 10, Los Angeles - It is a miserable day in the LA basin. The akasha devas, confused as to the meaning of "desert," are bringing cold spring showers to the Southland. Cloud banks have moved in, oil-slicked streets are flooding, and low altitude snow is falling in the foothills that normally just trap smog.
On the heels of scandalous findings of great financial impropriety at the Los Angeles Coliseum, once home to the Electric Daisy Carnival, Coachella tries to kick off. At least the first weekend of it. It will be replicated next week when the weather warms up in the Inland Empire.Dancers can slosh in the cold mud. Meditation and yoga circles can gather under tents in the newly promoter-purchased polo grounds.
Goldenvoice has decided to buy the land to establish itself and its two mega-festivals, the other being the country music jamboree Stagecoach, to the delight of municipal officials. Will there be sex, drugs, and electronic dance music? People attempting to escape our miserable economy sure hope so as they flock to Southern California's scenic desert in record numbers.

() It was Saturday afternoon when a promised thunderstorm brought heat relief!

The state is still enduring a drought, but this is the short blooming window of the state flower, the brilliant California poppy. So a lot of girls will be wearing them in their hair in tribute to an earlier generation of hippies who came up during a time of war, Vietnam, and economic uncertainty that looks good in comparison to our multiple wars -- Afghanistan, Iraq, Pakistan, Somalia, Yemen, Bahrain, Syria, and Iran, to say nothing of our covert operations in many other places -- and Great Depression II, with its massive un- and underemployment, currency devaluation, and hidden tax increases.

Who wouldn't want to replace this misery with sensual pleasure, the only form of pleasure most of us know?
