We were lucky to be able to observe this Buddhist ceremony. It was fascinating and beautiful. The Amida Buddha used to be housed in a temple complex but was destroyed by a tsunami in the 15th century and has remained outdoors ever since. For a small fee it is possible to enter the metal statue. It is lit inside by windows on the massive Buddha's back. A fundraiser with local dignitaries was going on for the victims of the recent tsunami. We purchased a beautiful iron souvenir then walked back to the train station. PHOTOS
