(KABC) LOS ANGELES- Large swaths of [formerly sunny, drought stricken] Southern California were seeing heavy rain early Monday morning, with thunderstorms and hail possible in parts of the Inland Empire [just east of LA County].
Consistent downpours were hitting foothill communities in Los Angeles County as the band of rain moved toward the ocean. Los Angeles and Orange counties will see a high of 82 degrees on Monday, with a 40% chance of thunderstorms.
The National Weather Service says hail the size of half dollars was falling Sunday in parts of San Bernardino and Riverside counties in the afternoon. A severe thunderstorm warning was issued, bringing lightning and possible flash flooding.
Hundreds of lightning strikes were recorded in the region.
On Monday, the Inland Empire and local valleys can again expect to see a 50% chance of thunderstorms, with a high temperature around 89 degrees.
Desert communities such as Palm Springs were also experiencing heavy rainfall and thunderstorms Monday morning. A flash food warning was in effect for most of the region.
