Today is "Cinco de Mayo." Waitaminute, Cinco de Mayo usually means "Fifth of May" or, more loosely, "Fourth of July," which is Independence Day -- not in Mexico or in Spanish, but in Spanglish-speaking North America it sure is. Those of us in the USA didn't think this through. It's el Dieciseis de Septiembre (ten and six of September) or "the Sixteenth of September." But nobody calls it that.
Dolores: Our Lady of Sorrows
The nation, the United States of Mexico (Estados Unidos de Mexico) as it is formally called, has chosen to go with El Grito de Dolores. "Dolores' Scream"? No, "The Yelp of Pains," the yearning to be free and to overthrow an oppressive European colonial power. "The Shout of [Resistance Saying No to More] Sorrows" or some such. It's too cold for guacamole and chips. Latin American L.A. is overcast. The American bars are empty except for tonight's usual Meat Market and Bad Choice Thursdays.

Mexican Independence Day and the Fiestas Patrias ("patriotic parties or celebrations") are some of the most exciting days of the year in Mexico. They canceled the in-person events at the last minute, so we have no idea what this year is going to be like. In today’s Gringos en Mexico ("Honkies in Mexico") vlog we find out for ourselves!
