The multidimensional universe of the Vedas (Vedic cosmology, complete series)

(Caitanya Chandra das, 9/7/20) The description of the universe offered in the Srimad Bhagavatam and other Puranas is something that most students of Vedic literature may have trouble understanding, to say nothing about explaining. 

While the Surya Siddhanta offers a description of the universe that is very similar to modern science, precisely describing the circumference of the Earth [the platform of Bhumi] and orbits of the planets, the Srimad Bhagavatam offers a bewildering explanation about the structure of the universe.

According to this explanation the Earth is part of Jambudvipa ("Roseapple Land"), the center of a gigantic flat structure that divides the universe in half.

In the lower part there are subterranean worlds below us inhabited by asuras, demonic (formerly celestia) beings, while the upper part is filled by numerous stars (devas, "shining ones") and planets, organized as disks or planes.

Not only that but our salt ocean is just the first one in a series of concentric oceans, intercalated with concentric islands.

For a person with a little scientific knowledge, this explanation can appear purely imaginative, but if we go beyond the surface, it’s actually very complex, deep, and intriguing.
