The Buddha's teachings at a massive monastery in New York (Finding Faith)

(Fox 5 New York, July 15, 2019) The Buddhist Association of the United States (BAUS.org) President Bhikkhu Bodhi was ordained as a Theravada Buddhist monk nearly 50 years ago, having left New York to study in California then gone from Cali to Asia in search of the Dharma in Sri Lanka.

Before 1973, Bhikkhu Bodhi (born Jeffery Block) lived in Borough Park, Brooklyn, where he grew up in a secular Jewish family.

Now 74 (in 2019), he and other Buddhist monks and nuns live at Chuang Yen Monastery in Putnam County, New York, near Carmel. The expansive and serene setting provides a tranquil place for those devoted to studying and practicing the ancient teachings of the historical Buddha, like meditation and sutra study in both Buddhist traditions.

Inside the Great Buddha Hall sits the largest indoor Buddha statue in the Western hemisphere, even larger than Los Angeles' Going West Monastery (Hsi Lai).

Bhikkhu Bodhi spoke to Fox 5's Sharon Crowley about the meaning of Buddhism. He said the Buddha fundamentally taught what he described to his ancient disciples as the "Four Noble Truths" that lead those who practice the path (which is the fourth truth) to the "noble" (enlightened) state.

Ego Death: Consequences for Will Smith? (ET)

Behind Will and Jada Pinkett Smith and Chris Rock's shaky history
(Entertainment Tonight, March 29, 2022) ET is looking inside the history between Hollywood royalty Will Smith, Jada Pinkett Smith, and comedian Chris Rock after Will Smith's shocking Oscars' night altercation.

Hilarious memes and tweets (distractify.com)
Actor Jim Carrey had some harsh words for Will Smith and Hollywood in general during an appearance on “CBS Morning” with Gayle King. Is Will Smith facing any real consequence of his mouthing off and violence?

Carrey called it “sickening” that the crowd at Sunday’s Oscars gave Smith a standing ovation for winning best actor only a short time after he rushed the stage and slapped comedian Chris Rock for making jokes about his wife.

“I was sickened by the standing ovation. I felt like Hollywood is just spineless en masse,” Carrey told King. “It really felt like this is a really clear indication that we’re not the cool club anymore.”

That's "Hollywood" for you. Sickening.
Carrey said if he were in Chris Rock’s position, he would sue Smith and also wondered if something deeper might have been bothering the 53-year-old actor than just what Rock had to say about Jada Pinkett Smith’s unattractive baldness, which he didn't know had anything to do with alopecia.

[Smith’s high-priced public relations team] released an official and carefully crafted statement on Monday night trying to apologize for Will Smith's inexcusable actions:

Violence in all of its forms is poisonous and destructive. My behavior at last night’s Academy Awards was unacceptable and inexcusable,” [they wrote in Smith’s name].

“Jokes at my expense are a part of the job...” [blah blah blah, money will get me out of this mess...] More

US calls Burma's ethnic cleansing "genocide"

The current butcher in Burma
Four years ago, the U.S. State Department began an investigation into the Burmese (now Myanmar) military’s brutal operation against the country’s Rohingya Muslim minority.

That happened the prior year, and it resulted in scores of deaths [state-sponsored murders] and hundreds of thousands of Rohingya being pushed into the neighboring Muslim country of Bangladesh.

The report, spanning thousands of pages, was finalized when Mike Pompeo was still U.S. secretary of state, and he ultimately opted to call the armed forces’ actions “ethnic cleansing,” a descriptive term not defined by international law: Why the U.S. is finally calling the genocide in Myanmar a ‘genocide’ (msn.com)

Will Smith is a disgrace (fight at Oscars)

Oscar Night was ruined by a Hollywood hypocrite, preaching "love" after striking a comedian making fun of his unattractive wife's choice of haircuts. Then he wins an Academy Award and far from mentioning any remorse over his criminal actions, he launches into a prepared speech about wanting to be a "vessel for love," which garners him a standing ovation. It's Hollywood protecting disgusting behavior. It's a night that will live in infamy.
  • #CancelViolenceAgainstComedians
How will Chris Rock be restored? How will the Musty Prince of Bel-Air make things right? Guess you find a unicorn who swings or hands out hall passes, and you have to do everything to protect your Tinsel Town trophy. Right, Will? It's trash behavior, a disgrace.

How to take a punch in a fight (video)

Eds., Wisdom Quarterly; National Geographic (natgeo.com); Ando Mierzwa, 8/24/15

We're Hollywood royalty. We get away with it
How we are, reborn on Earth. We need the grossest, most tangible, palpable, explicit examples to understand a comparison.

Most of our sayings are based on something vile and literal.

That's what makes listening to death metal seem almost healthy, taking British poet A.E. Housman's advice in "Terence, this is stupid stuff" to make ourselves immune to the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune by gradual self-exposure to them in poetry or literature to build our tolerance for real life.

For example, "brown noser" means what? The nicest people say it. How graphic do we need to get to get it?

Rape is horrible, even if it's rampant in prison, so it makes sense to say "raped by machinegun fire".

Profanity in American English comes from prison, the horror of the reality of which is too much for ordinary minds to comprehend until they arrive and see the indifference of the guards firsthand. "Bitch" is a prison term, like "punk."

Fleece Johnson (myPOKEcard.com)
"I will F you up..." Up, up what? Most of us do not realize what we are saying. It's an incomplete sentence full of menace because it implies a definite part of the body.

Therefore, let us contemplate the punch. Most of us will not get in fights. Most of us will not throw or receive a punch. Most of us will not be knocked out by an opponent. Well, not literally.

But figuratively that punch is coming for us. It's already been here, and it's coming round again.

After all, it's our main problem -- our only real problem among the 84 -- not wanting what we have.

So let's brace ourselves, enter the dojo, and listen to sensei explain how to take the untakeable, how to receive and deal with the intolerable:

How to take a punch in a fight
WARNING: The advice and movements shown in this video are for informational and educational purposes only. Consult a doctor before engaging in any exercise or martial arts program.

(Ando Mierzwa) Whether training in the martial arts for self-defense -- or just living life -- learning how to take a punch is a crucial skill. Here are two important tips.

"Fight war not wars," but how to fight ignorance?
SUMMARY: The basics of taking a punch are pretty simple: Keep mouth shut, tuck chin, and roll with it. But what to when it’s not possible to roll? What can be done when one gets rocked to core? Here are training tips that might help.

DISCLAIMER: Ando Mierzwa is not a medical professional. Take his advice and practice at your own risk.

TIP #1: When getting hit, focus before quitting. Time will not stop. A bad guy will not stop punching. When getting rocked, it is necessary to get focus back right away. It doesn't matter what is done, but when taking a hit, train to move through the moment instead of trying to stop it.

No, this does not mean ignore the pain, Control it. When getting rocked, take a breath, protect yourself, and focus.

They gave us a secret word to shout to fight.
TIP #2: Get a trigger word. Security dogs are trained to attack when they hear a secret code word. Do the same Don't get lost in a fog of pain and panic. Instead, clear the clouds as fast as possible by repeating a trigger word silently.

Maybe say "GO" or "FIGHT." It doesn't matter. Just pick a word that fires up the spirit. Don't let voices in your head turn on you. Don’t give them time. This is the big lesson on how to take a punch:

You can’t control the fight if you can’t control your mind. So give the mind something to focus on. Of course, there’s a life lesson here.

We all take hits every day. Each hit you take is a chance to strengthen your fighting spirit. No matter what happens out there, when you take a hit, take a breath, make a decision, and follow through.

That’s not just the secret to winning a fight, it’s the secret to winning in life. Keep fighting (for a happy life)!

Missing William Hurt: "Altered States" (video)

(FunkyardDogg) Here is the cleverest entheogenic mushroom hallucination in the old movie Altered States, starring William Hurt. It is the most creative and ultimately beautiful scene (in the opinion of some) in Ken Russell's 1980 film Altered States. The scene is fairly dark (visually), but there's enough detail to see clearly enough in higher resolution.

Now here we have a great comic strip reminiscent of The Far Side by Gary Larson, one of our favorite cartoonists of all time. In it we see two inmates whispering about a fellow top bunker holding two hand puppets that look like twin versions of himself, a pair of Mini Mes. One inmate whispers to the other...?

Let's get the ball rolling with a few ideas:
  • "Don't look now, but I think we can take them."
  • "Oh no, he says he's going to marry the twins."
  • "Did he just say what I think he said?"
  • "Are any of them looking at us?"
  • "Fifteen years and it's come to this."
  • "Which one of them is talking?"
  • "Are you sure about this guy? He's does have two letters of recommendation that speak highly of him."
  • "Keep your voice down! One of them is a snitch."
  • "If we're not careful, we'll end up in the hole [solitary confinement] like those guys."

Never Forget Tibet: Dalai Lama's Story (3/31)

Ananda (Dharma Buddhist Meditation), Dhr. Seven; Reynold Watkins (3rd Sats); Wisdom Quarterly

A new movie called Never Forget Tibet: The Dalai Lama's Untold Story is premiering in Pasadena. We'll meet at Laemmle's Playhouse 7 to watch this new doc about the current Dalai Lama, a kind of Pope in Vajrayana Buddhism.

[Will it reveal his CIA involvement as a paid asset whose brother and inner circle accepted weapons and militant training in Colorado by US forces using Tibet to fight a proxy war against China? Probably not. (See the Los Angeles Times for that reporting). This is likely a fluff piece to promote the story we all know of a great man made by the media.]

Meet inside theater about 6:45 pm for the movie that starts at 7:00 pm. It will be followed by discussion afterwards. The movie has a runtime 140 minutes.

FYI: This is the one and only screening! There will be no other time or day to see it.

If Pasadena is out of reach, go to Fathom Events' website (fathomevents.com) to find a nearby screening.
