Tsunami? "Rogue wave" slams into Southern California beachgoers, 9 hospitalized
Japanese invented the word tsunami.
(KTLA 5) Dec. 28, 2023: Video was captured by citizen surfer dude Colin Hoag of the terrifying moment beachgoers were slammed into by a massive "rogue wave" (aka "monster wave") in Ventura County, next to Los Angeles, on Thursday. The incident happened as locals were being warned about a massive swell -- and mega surf usually reserved for Hawaii and other surfing hotspots -- pounding the Southern California coastline this week.
The rogue wave submerged bystanders at Pierpont Beach on Seaward Avenue around 11:00 am. As the waters suddenly flooded an observation area, both people and vehicles were instantly swept away. The raging waters destroyed the windows of nearby beachfront buildings and hotels on its destructive path. Beachgoers were seen frantically running for their lives. All survived but some with serious injuries, and nine had to be hospitalized. KTLA's Chris Wolfe reports on Dec. 28, 2023.
