MANTRA: "Om Mani Padme Hum"

Buddhanet.net; CC Liu, Dhr. Seven, Amber Larson, Seth Auberon (eds.), Wisdom Quarterly
Crib notes are unnecessary in Mantra Class. It's all rote repetition (tibetanlife.com).

Avalokiteshvara/Kwan Yin has an associated mantra. It is called the Mani Mantra or Mantra of Universal Protection runs:

Oṃ maṇi padme hūṃ

It means "Homage to the Jewel in the Lotus."
But it cannot be directly translated without understanding something about Sanskrit mantras.

For one thing, they often begin with "om" (the universal sound). For another, they derive as much or more power/importance from their sounds or subtle vibration than from their intellectualized meaning. These vibrations relate to the human chakras. "Hum," for example, corresponds with the fifth energy-center at the throat/voice box
    • Om: the universal sound.
    • mani: jewel.
    • padme: lotus flower.
    • hum: a seed-sound representing the spirit of enlightenment.
I'm Avalokiteshavara, and I chant, Om mani...
For a better breakdown see Om mani padme hum. What is the source of compassion on Earth? If anyone can be like Kwan Yin -- a living being who spreads compassion, mercy, and loving-kindness -- that means we can, too. We can develop the ability of 1,000 arms, the knowledge of 1,000 eyes, and the sagacity of skillful means. All humans have innate compassion (karuna) that can be cultivated further through learning and practice. Who is God/Goddess of Mercy?
