Progress toward restoring precious Baldwin Lake Cloistered within the Arboretum, a former Tongva tribe watering hole now renamed "Baldwin Lake" has managed to survive the rapid development of the San Gabriel Valley. But accumulated sediments and collapsing shorelines have dramatically reduced water depth, severely affecting the aquatic ecosystem and species diversity.
The Drought: Time to Step Up With the current drought emergency in Southern California, the Arboretum is taking water savings to a new level. They’re using new high efficiency irrigation systems, further reducing turf area, and demonstrating new and old water conserving strategies called xeroscaping and the use of native plant species at the hugelculture mounds.

The Arboretum has the knowledge and experience to help everyone raise healthy plants.
Sunset Magazine names L.A. Arboretum one of the best botanical gardens in the West!
In selecting the top 15 “extraordinary botanical gardens” in the West, Sunset noted they are more than just pretty flowers: “They are also engaged in important work, showcasing and propagating endangered species and teaching visitors how to create striking home gardens using very little water.”
