An Irish immigrant fights on the Great Plains in Days Without End


Fresh AirThe Irish author Sebastian Barry lives in Ireland and as a young man grew his hair long the first chance he got, when he went off to school as an act of identification with the noble Native Americans in the far off United States of America. The protagonist of his new novel is conscripted right off the boat as the price of American citizenship. Eventually he finds love and companionship with one of his fellow soldiers. Barry, who is straight, has a gay son who changed his life and worldview. And Ireland was one of the first places in the world to accept gay marriage as a right of a maligned group. Now the Western world has followed suit, save for Trump's US. But the majority of US citizens say, "This is not Trump's US; it's ours." More
