Tibet House US was created 30 years ago by Harvard's Robert Thurman and Hollywood's Richard Gere at the request of the XIVth Dalai Lama.

The mission of Tibet House US is to preserve, present, and protect Tibetan culture -- its arts, sciences, medicine, and philosophy -- for the Tibetan people and the rest of the world.

This effort is needed because it is estimated that, since the 1949 invasion of Tibet by China, some 95% of Tibet’s material culture and Buddhist artifacts have been destroyed.

Presently, Tibetan language, lifestyle, livelihoods, religion, and customs continue to be deliberately and actively targeted by policies of the Chinese government designed to consolidate its possession of Tibet’s land by erasing the Tibetans’ distinctive identity and history.

Tibet House represents Tibet by being a cultural embassy in New York, a place where the general public can discover all things Tibetan.

Tibet House does this through conferences, retreats, educational programs, religious events, publications, translations, school tours, gallery and museum exhibitions, concerts, building, and maintaining a Repatriation Collection of Tibetan Art as well as an old Tibet photographic archive, and much more.
