How it all began: May 16, 2005, Nepal

Buddha Boy's story gained popularity in part because he was doing the impossible -- not drinking, not eating, and sitting still for months on end -- and partly because it resembles an episode in the life of Prince Siddhartha Gautama, who became a wandering ascetic then the historical Buddha, often called Shakyamuni (Sage from the Shakya Clan" or "Scythians/Saka" from Central Asia).

But Bomjon himself knows better and has rejected such comparisons:

"Tell the people not to call me a buddha. I don't have the Buddha's energy currently. I am at the level of a rinpoche."^[1] 

President of the Nepal Buddhist Council Mahiswor Raj Bajracharya has likewise stated: "We do not believe he is [the] Buddha. He does not have  [the] Buddha's qualities."^[2]

Wandering

It's hard to wander with so many followers.

Bomjon suddenly went missing on March 11, 2006.

His support team and fans theorized that he went deeper into the woods to look for a quieter place to meditate.^[3]

On March 19, 2006 Bed Bahadur Lama of the Om Namo Buddha Tapaswi Sewa Samiti (ONBTSS) told reporters that they had seen him in Bara district.

They spoke to him for 30 minutes, during which time Bomjon said, "There is no peace here" and mentioned that he would return in six years or 2012 after a long bout of meditation commensurate with the historical Buddha's quest.

He left a message for his loving parents telling them not to worry. More
