Why were most chattel slaves in the Americas from West Africa? Non-chattel "slavery" has existed throughout history in various forms across the globe (usually not based on race), but who became enslaved was almost always based on military conquest. So why did greedy and cruel white Europeans travel thousands of miles to enslave people from a particular geographic region?
