Vesak (Pali Vesākha, Sanskrit Vaiśākha), also known as Buddha Jayanti, Buddha Purnima, and Buddha Day, is a holiday traditionally observed by Buddhists and some Hindus on different days in the various Buddhist countries of India, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Tibet, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Burma, Mongolia, the Philippines, and in China (but not in formerly Buddhist countries of Afghanistan, Pakistan, Baluchistan, Kazakhstan, Kirgystan, Tajikastan, Gandhara (the former Scythian/Shakyian Land of the Buddha), Japan, Korea, Taiwan, and Vietnam as "Buddha's Birthday" as well as in other parts of the world. The festival commemorates the birth, enlightenment (Buddhahood), and final nirvana (parinirvāna) of the Buddha Gautamaa in the Theravada or more orthodox tradition. More
