Mexico's '4th of July' (El Grito) is Sept 16th

ABC7, 2019; Crystal Quintero, Pfc. Sandoval, Sheldon S., CC Liu (eds.), Wisdom Quarterly

Back four years ago at the 73rd annual East L.A. Mexican Independence Day parade
(ABC7) Back when corrupt Eric Garcetti (who was on the fast track to becoming the US ambassador to India before derailing himself) was mayor of Los Angeles, ABC7 News streamed this parade live (Sept. 8, 2019).

Here the mayor is seen with his daughter, Maya. Being Jewish Mexican Americans in a city that more or less accepts these two groups -- sometimes more, sometimes less -- for all the dynamism and vitality and wealth they added to this region.

(Of course, next to no one in the U.S. cares about the real Mexican Independence Day -- El Grito de Dolores -- because we're all still pooped out after overdoing it while accidentally celebrating it on Cinco de Mayo (May 5th).

Wasn't that on Cinco de Mayo?

May 5th just honors the success of one revolutionary battle to oust European occupiers, kicking the Imperial French out of Puebla, Mexico. The U.S. cares more about Cinco de Mayo than most Mexicans not from the State of Puebla.

Mesoamerica is in North America and will unite.
Interestingly, the country just south of the USA is not named Mexico. Its actual official name is the "Mexican United States" or Estados Unidos Mexicanos, or actually, more technically, in the indigenous language of Nahuatl, Mēxihcatl Tlacetilīlli Tlahtohcāyōtl, representing 38 states, not one of them being Tijuana, Rosarito, Cancun, Ciudad Juarez, or Acapulco, all of which are well known to American tourists who like to travel south for a little rest and relaxation when older than 18 but not yet 21.

Mexicanos in Chicago told to calm down for this year's celebrations.

Finally, and think about it for a moment, Spanish is not a language of the Americas, the "New World." It is an imposed European language, forced on us by imperial Conquistadores (their word for themselves, "Conquerors"). The Aztec language the Spanish-European invaders displaced is called Nahuatl (pronounced \nah-wah\, not \nuh-wattle\ like it looks).

Ancient Tenochtitlan was an amazing place.
The country is called the United Mexican States because of the Mexica people (an indigenous Aztec tribe) of Tenochtitlán (modern-day Mexico City, the nation's capital), a magnificent settlement larger and better organized than any city in Europe 500 years ago, when European invaders first laid eyes on it and sent back glowing reports of its hygiene, ingenuity, colossal scale, commerce, and cleanliness when London was a filthy and miasmic place full of industrial grime, poor sanitation, and smelly disease.

ABC7 is proud to broadcast the East Los Angeles Mexican Independence Day parade, the nation's largest and oldest Latinx parade, hosted in 2019 by Jovana Lara and Danny Romero. abc7.la.
