Native American plants and foods event (Zoom)

Christopher Nyerges (Wild Food Self-Reliance Discovery); Dhr. Seven, Ananda, Wisdom Quarterly

Real Street Food: Urban Foraging in L.A.
(Great Big Story, 7/11/17) Christopher Nyerges has always loved plants and the outdoors. As a child, he foraged and stored plants in his parents’ refrigerator. Now he teaches others to do the same. This isn’t a nature hike with foraging.

How to Survive Anywhere (2nd ed.)
Nyerges uses his encyclopedic botanical knowledge and keen eye for urban-dwelling edible wild plants and teaches other Los Angeles residents where to find them and how to use them. At his School of Self-Reliance, he teaches city folks how to source alleys, parking lots, city parks, and path to find unexpected wild eats. From mustard flowers to radish pods, mallow fruits to mushrooms, he can forage the best and most nutritious vegetarian street food.

Christopher Nyerges talks about his first of 20 books on wild plants

Zoom event April 8, 2021
Guide to Wild Foods...Plants
Learn about the many plant contributions of Native Americans to American culture today -- plants for food, medicine, and tools.

We’ll see these plants, which are in many cases very common, taken for granted, and not recognized for their rich history. This is a botanical exploration of plants of the Americas that are used to this day.

Foraging in North America
We’ll begin with the American plants that have profoundly affected the diet of the world. Then we’ll look at the local native plants that have a long history of use by the indigenous peoples of LA.

The Helgo Treasure: A Viking Age Buddha

Colm (Irish Archaeology, 12/28/13); Dhr. Seven, Pat Macpherson (eds.), Wisdom Quarterly
Helgo Buddha (Swedish History Museum/Soren Hellgren)
A remarkable collection of religious items sourced from diverse lands was discovered during archaeological excavations on the Swedish island of Helgo.

Located in Lake Malaren, to the west of Stockholm, this small island was an important Viking trading and manufacturing center (6th-11th centuries AD). It has produced an enormous collection of artifacts, including numerous exotic finds such as Arabic coins, Frankish glass, and metalwork from across Western Europe.

Prominent urna on a Buddha from Gandhara
However, the most famous objects found were three precious items, now known as the "Helgö Treasure." Discovered close together, these artifacts included a Buddha statue from the Indian subcontinent, an elaborate crozier-head from Ireland, and a bronze ladle from North Africa.

Undoubtedly the most extraordinary find discovered during the excavations at Helgo was a small, bronze Buddha statue.

This figure dates from circa the 6th century AD and was probably made in Kashmir, on the Pakistan (Gandhara)-India (Bharat) border.

The Swedish Helgö Buddha
This Buddha has a silver urna on his forehead, symbolizing the third eye (dibba cakkhu), while the ears have long lobes, the insignia of royalty. He sits in a meditative pose upon a double lotus throne, the latter representing purity.

The Buddha probably arrived on Helgo Island via Swedish merchants whose eastern trade routes were concentrated along Russian rivers such as the Volga [where there exists Russian Buddhism, Central Asian Buddhism (from the former USSR empire), and Siberian Buddhism and the only indigenously Buddhist land in Europe, Kalmykia, and the Shaman-Buddhists of Buryatia]. What is a "mandala," and what is it for?

Amber Larson, CC Liu, Ashley Wells (eds.), Wisdom Quarterly Wikipedia edit

Buddhist monks work on a mandala world map.
A mandala (Sanskrit "circle," मण्डल) is a geometric configuration of symbols.

In various spiritual traditions, mandalas may be employed:
  • to focus the attention of practitioners and adepts
  • as a spiritual guidance tool
  • to establish a sacred space, or
  • serve as an aid to meditation and trance-absorption (jhana) induction.
Mandala in three dimensions: Borobudur Buddhist temple

Mandala made for a Dalai Lama visit, May 2008
In the Eastern philosophies and religious practices of Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, and Shintoism a mandala can be used as a map representing deities (devas), dimensions (the threefold Immaterial, Fine Material, and Sensual Spheres and their 31 Planes of Existence), worlds, or specially in the case of Shintoism, paradises, kami (shapeshifting spirits) or actual shrines [1, 2].

Buddhist cosmology: 31 Planes of Rebirth
Mandala as an art form first appeared in Buddhist art that were produced in India during the first century B.C.E. [3]

In New Age thinking the mandala is a diagram, chart, or geometric pattern that represents the cosmos metaphysically or symbolically. It can be a time-microcosm of the universe.

But it originally meant to represent wholeness and a model for the organizational structure of life itself, a cosmic diagram that shows the relation to the infinite and the world that extends beyond and within various minds and bodies. More

Lost Irish Buddhist: first Western monk

Irish: The Dharma Bum: A Documentary
Dubliner Ven. Dhammaloka (Burmese ဦးဓမ္မလောက, circa 1856–1914) was an Irish-born wanderer in the USA who traveled from California to Asia.

He ordained as a Theravada Buddhist monk, which would have been before Brits Gordon Douglas or Allan Bennett (1872-1923), who are usually attributed the honor after they ordained and became Ven. Asoka and Ven. Ananda Metteya, respectively.

Born Laurence Carroll (or Laurence O'Rourke, or William Colvin or...he used many aliases so we do not know for sure), he received the Buddhist name Dhammaloka, which means "Dharma world" or "Dharma Light" (Dhamma = "Dharma," + loka "world or realm," or aloka = "light").

With robes and bowl, circa 1899.
He was a strong critic of Christian missionaries in Asia and a temperance campaigner who took an active role in the Asian Buddhist revival around the turn of the 20th century.

U Dhammaloka (U, pronounced /ooh/, is an honorific Burmese title not a name) was ordained in Buddhist Burma prior to 1900, making him the earliest attested Western Buddhist monk in modern times.

He warned against Christians missionaries.
He was a celebrity preacher, a vigorous polemicist, and a prolific editor in British Burma and Singapore between 1900 and his conviction for sedition and appeal in 1910–1911.

Drawing on Western atheist writings, he publicly challenged the role of Christian missionaries and by implication the colonial British empire. More

Lost Irish Buddhist
History's wrong. The 1st was Irish.
(UCC Ireland, 1/11/11) Who was he really, this hobo, world traveler, and famous Buddhist in Asia, who blazed a trail for Westerners but passed away, it seems, only to be ignored by history?

This enigmatic, free-thinking Dubliner who used different aliases, we now know to have been Venerable Dhammaloka, "the Irish Buddhist" who converted to Theravada Buddhism around 1900.

He became widely known throughout Asia and, in the process, managed to fall afoul of the colonial British establishment as well as Protestant Christian missionaries.

The Dharma Bum is a video documentary.
Uncovering Ven. Dhammaloka's unique story has taken some inspired detective work on the part of UCC Professor Brian Bocking and his colleagues. But their efforts have not been in vain.

The "Lost Irish Buddhist" emerges after all these years as one of the earliest Western Buddhist monks, likely the earliest attested Westerner, predating many others who have tried to claim the title. Prof. Bocking takes us through an amazing odyssey.

Gnosticism and Buddhism

Pat Macpherson, Dhr. Seven (eds.), Wisdom Quarterly
Hindu = Christian = Muslim = Mahayana Buddhist
Gnosticism and Buddhism? The Gnostic tradition is not limited to Christianity.

It also shows up in the Catholic-like Mahayana ("Great Vehicle") school of Buddhism, which represents 90% of Buddhists and teaches things the historical Buddha never said, much like modifications of Bible stories in Christianity.

It contains elements that are essentially the same as Mithraism (Rome and England's pre-Christian mass appeal religion), universalism in Christianity (Catholicism), and devotional Hinduism.

The central figure, for example, is an ahistorical buddha (really a celestial God) named Amitabha in a heavenly Western Paradise, who is overshadowed in popularity by a female divinity -- Kwan Yin (the Goddess of Compassion), an idolized "Mary" figure.

Even Islam teaches reliance on some "future savior" -- a Messiah (Christian), Maitreya (Buddhism), or Madhi (Islam) -- and other universalism basics.

Better trans: How to Know God
The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali
explores yoga fundamentals, one of the six orthodox philosophies of Hinduism.

This ancient book is revered as one of the greatest texts of the practice of ashtanga or the "eight limbs" of yoga.

Comprised of 196 aphorisms dating back to 400 CE, The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali is divided into four chapters that explore:
  1. the blissful state,
  2. the practice,
  3. the manifestation, and
  4. the liberation stages of yoga.
The text includes the eight limbs or factors:
  1. yamas (abstinences),
  2. niyama (observances),
  3. asana (poses),
  4. pranayama (breath control),
  5. pratyahara (sense withdrawal),
  6. dharana (concentration),
  7. dhyana (meditative absorption),
  8. samadhi (union).
This philosophy has influences on thought in Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism, the three main Dharmic traditions, but it can be applied to anyone's practice of meditation and yoga.

The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali is an important and profound accompaniment to novices and accomplished yogis alike, as they delve deeper into the philosophy behind the practice. More

Mindfulness (sati, smrti, mindful awareness or presence of mind, objective attention, detached attentiveness) is the moment-by-moment process of openly accepting while dispassionately observing our physical, emotional, and mental experiences free of our customary reactions to them of clinging, resisting, or becoming deluded.

"Right mindfulness," which the Buddha called samma sati, has scientific support. It reduces stress, improves attention, boosts mood and immunity, reduces emotional reactivity, and promotes health and well-being. But it is harmful when done incorrectly.

Yoga and Buddhism: How are they related?

Talk by Dr. Werner, The Buddhist Society; Amber Larson, Dhr. Seven (eds.), Wisdom Quarterly

Scythian Buddha, Gandhara
The Buddha’s Noble Eightfold Path leading to the cessation of all suffering and Patanjali’s classical eightfold yoga (ashtanga) system were not taking shape simultaneously.

Patanjali collected and tried to summarize inscrutable aphorisms (not sutras or "discourses") as an attempt to explain and build a systematic approach to yoga or "union" with the divine, following the general framework of the outsider Buddha's super successful Noble Eightfold Path teachings then sweeping through the Indian empire.

Hey, can I do this yoga asana thing myself?
The Buddha expounded The Path (magga) he realized across many sutras (whole discourses with through lines or sutures connecting them) in the wider context of his revolutionary Dharma or Teaching, as preserved today in the language of the Pali canon.
But it was not given a systematic shape comparable to the text of Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras, which was codified centuries after the Buddha’s discourses on the basis of his previous practices as a wandering ascetic, like the hermits with whom the Buddha himself mingled as a seeker for six years leading up to his enlightenment.

Both systems contain elements of bodily awareness as important bases for spiritual practice, although not fully spelled out. The talk will explore this aspect as it may have been evolving from early times until it was given textual expression in specialized treatises in medieval times.

It is compared to the speaker Prof. Werner’s discovery of both Buddhism and Yoga while living in isolation under the Communist regime behind the Iron Curtain.
SPEAKER: Prof. Karel Werner, Ph.D., was born in 1925 in Czechoslovakia and studied philosophy, history, Indology (study of India), and Sinology (study of China) in the Masaryk University of Brno and Palacky University of Olomouc.

Amazon was a Garden: America's Lost History

Graham Hancock Before America; Pat Macpherson, Xochitl, Dhr. Seven (eds.), Wisdom Quarterly
The Amazon is not a natural but a purposely-built garden, says Hancock. (andbeyond.com)

America Before (US edition)
Was an advanced civilization lost to history in the global cataclysm that ended the last Ice Age? International bestselling author Graham Hancock has made it his life’s work to find out. In America Before he draws on the latest archeological and DNA evidence to bring to light the stunning conclusion to his quest.

Hancock’s research takes us on a series of journeys and encounters with the scientific rebels responsible for the recent extraordinary breakthroughs. In the process, from the Mississippi Valley to the Amazon rainforest, he reveals that ancient "New World" cultures share a legacy of advanced scientific knowledge and sophisticated spiritual beliefs with supposedly unconnected "Old World" cultures.

Have archeologists failed to consider the revolutionary possibility that the origins of civilization might be in the "New World" rather than where they had been focusing for far too long, namely in the "Old World," in their search for those origins?

America Before: The Key to Earth’s Lost Civilization is the culmination of everything that millions of readers have loved in Hancock’s body of work over the past decades, namely a
  • mind-dilating exploration of the mysteries of the past,
  • amazing archaeological discoveries, and
  • profound implications for how we lead our lives today.
A few of the revelations from the book:

We were taught in school that The Americas were the last of the great landmasses of the Earth to be inhabited by humans -- who were thought to have arrived exclusively on foot from Northeast Asia around 13,000 years ago by crossing the Bering Straits, which formed a land-bridge to Alaska during the lowered sea-levels of the Ice Age.

By contrast, anatomically-modern humans, originating in Africa, are believed to have reached Europe, Asia, and even Australia, as far back as 60,000 years ago.

Since the recent publication in Nature of landmark research in Southern California, scientists have begun to realize that something of immense importance is missing from this long-established picture.

Though the general public have not been kept well-informed, it now appears that The Americas were first peopled at least 130,000 years ago -- many tens of thousands of years before human settlements became established elsewhere.

Yet, because of the dominance of the former -- and now entirely discredited -- theory of the late peopling of The Americas, and of mental blocks associated with that theory, archeologists continue to focus only on the "Old World" in their search for the origins of civilization and have not considered the revolutionary possibility that those origins might in fact be found in the "New World."

Uncontacted Amazon tribe (Indigenous peoples, The Guardian)
Certain tribes of the Amazon rainforest are closely related to Australian Aborigines and to Melanesians from Papua New Guinea. This extraordinary, unexpected, and extremely ancient DNA signal is only present in South America and is completely absent in North America and Mesoamerica (modern Mexico).

It bears witness to something that archeologists hitherto believed to be impossible -- that the technology and skills needed to cross the Pacific Ocean, and successfully resettle a reproductively-viable population, existed more than 13,000 years ago.

Such secrets of human prehistory, now revealed by cutting-edge science, call for a complete rethink of our understanding of our own remote past and hint at the existence of a lost civilization of the Ice Age.

Pyramids in the USA
America Before (British edition)
Astonishing similarities exist between the spiritual beliefs of the ancient Egyptians, as manifested in their Book of the Dead and the spiritual beliefs of the mound-builder cultures of the Mississippi Valley -- as manifested, for example, at Moundville in Alabama, Cahokia (pyramids) in Illinois, and Watson Brake in Louisiana.

Hitherto written off as "coincidental" by archeologists, the new investigation presented in America Before confirms that the parallels are very real. [These "mounds" are flattop Mesoamerican-style pyramids.]

The deep and explicit details, imagery and beliefs, shared by these two supposedly unconnected religious systems can no longer be dismissed as coincidence. Nor are they the result of direct "diffusion" of culture from ancient Egypt to ancient North America, or vice versa.

Challenging our entire understanding of prehistory, what the evidence points to instead is a shared legacy of sophisticated ideas concerning the mystery of life and death inherited more than 13,000 years ago, in both the "Old" world and the "New," from an advanced predecessor civilization as yet unidentified by archeologists.

South America’s Amazon rainforest has long been regarded as pristine jungle, unpeopled until less than a thousand years ago and thereafter inhabited only by "primitive" tribes of hunter-gatherers.

America Before comprehensively refutes this picture with a thorough investigation of the latest scientific evidence.

The Amazon Garden: Ayahuasca
DMT brew: Ayahuasca cooking, Loreto, Peru
Far from an untouched wilderness, Hancock's book reveals the Amazon to be a vast "garden," very precisely shaped and molded by humans for more than 13,000 years.

Its early inhabitants possessed advanced scientific knowledge concerning the molecular properties of plants -- evident in concoctions such as the visionary brew ayahuasca and the nerve poison curare.

Those first peoples of the Amazon were also the creators
of a "miracle earth" (terra preta) still capable of
rejuvenating much younger and infertile soils
when it is added to them today!

Thanks to new scanning technologies such as LiDAR, and because of the tragic ongoing clearances of old-growth rainforest to make way for meat-industry cattle ranches, we now know that great cities once existed in the Amazon, their populations supported by the immense agricultural productivity of terra preta.

We know, too, that in ancient times there were people here who possessed and deployed sophisticated geometrical and astronomical skills to create immense earthworks, many with footprints larger than that of the Great Pyramid of Egypt.

Cambodian novice touches Buddhist temple relief
America Before
reveals the true extent and significance of these vast, newly-discovered Amazonian "geoglyphs," their stunning resemblance to the equally grand and mysterious earthworks of Ohio such as Serpent Mound, and the Newark and High Bank Works, and connections to other geometrical and astronomical monuments as far afield as Stonehenge in England and the much larger and wondrous Buddhist-Hindu Angkor (with the Buddhist temple complexes of Angkor Wat and Angkor Thom, Siem Reap, and others still unexcavated in the jungle) in Cambodia.

Again, what the evidence points to is a shared legacy of knowledge inherited from a much earlier civilization that has been lost to history.

Global cataclysm
Then a comet soared by and disintegrated.
For some decades it has been generally accepted that a global cataclysm occurred around 12,800 years ago at the onset of a mysterious period of earth changes and climate instability known to geologists as the Younger Dryas.

Since 2007 a group of more than 60 scientists, publishing in leading peer-reviewed journals, have presented evidence linking the cataclysm to a disintegrating comet that crossed the orbit of the earth 12,800 years ago and bombarded our planet with a "swarm" of fragments, some more than a kilometer in diameter.

Though compelling, with new corroborative studies published every year, the comet hypothesis remains controversial and a number scientists favor other explanations. What all are agreed on, however, is that a global cataclysm did indeed occur.

America Before reveals that the epicenter of the cataclysm lay in North America, then still in the grip of the Ice Age with much of the northern half of the continent covered in ice a mile deep.

An immense flood was unleashed as large sectors of the ice cap suddenly melted. From the Channeled Scablands of the state of Washington, via the gigantic potholes lining the Saint Croix River in Minnesota, to the Finger Lakes of Upstate New York, a huge swathe of North America was swept clean by this massive deluge.

At the same time global sea-level rose, the Gulf Stream was stopped in its tracks and the world was plunged into a deep-freeze that lasted 1,200 years.

It was the end of the former age of the earth, the Pleistocene, and the beginning of our own epoch, the Holocene. In the transition, America Before reveals that an advanced civilization, hitherto the stuff of myth and legend, was lost to history. More
