Nihilism: In the Dust of This Planet (RadioLab)

Nihilism as expensive tee-shirt art? In the Dust of This Planet (Lilly Collins/radiolab.org)

In the Dust of This Planet
A book for no one to read
NIHILISM: Horror, fashion, and the end of the world...things get weird as RadioLab explores the undercurrents of thought that link nihilists, beard-stroking philosophers, Jay-Z, and True Detective.

Today on Radiolab, a puzzle: Host Jad Abumrad’s brother-in-law wrote a book called In the Dust of This Planet. It’s an academic treatise about nihilism and the horror humanity feels as we realize that we are nothing but a meaningless speck in the universe.
For a few years nobody read it. But then it seemed to show up on True Detective. Then in a fashion magazine. And then on Jay-Z's back. How?
  • Let's talk nihilism with Prof. Eugene Thacker and Simon Critchley,
  • art on leather jackets with June Ambrose,
  • climate change with David Victor, and
  • hope with the father of Transcendental Black Metal, Hunter Hunt Hendrix of the band Liturgy.

Special thanks to Thrill Jockey for use of the Liturgy song "Generation." It's from their album Aesthetica, which is highly recommended listening for the end times. Find Eugene Thacker's In the Dust of This Planet at Zero Books. More + AUDIO

Correction: An earlier version of this piece mistakenly identified Nic Pizzolatto as the director of True Detective, when he is in fact the creator, writer, and executive producer of the series. The audio has been adjusted. Cary Fukunaga (brilliantly) directed season one of True Detective.
  • 228 mins with Jad Abumrad, Robert Krulwich (NY Mag)
  • ♫ Radiolab is deep-dive journalism and innovative sound design with host Jad Abumrad. The program began as an exploration of scientific inquiry. Over the years it has evolved to become a platform for long-form journalism and storytelling, co-hosted by Lulu Miller and Latif Nasser

Billie Eilish, metal Muslims, Orthodox Jews, girls on guitar, Jasmine Jams (video)

Billie Eilish’s boobs on British Vogue send clear message. So much for modesty (StyleCaster)

Billie is like the female Scarlett Johanson
(LA Times) Billie Eilish is crying on the cover of her new album. The lone teardrop isn’t obvious at first, shiny enough that it could just be part of her glittery makeup. Her eyes are blue and empty, staring vacantly into the distance. “Happier Than Ever,” read the words above her face.

Is this what fame has done to Eilish? Taken the air out of the lungs of the wunderkind from #HighlandPark? Stripped her of her Rainbow Brite hair colors and oversize tees and turned her into a blond pin-up?

I'm depressed because fame is great, but it sucks, too.
Not entirely. But it’s complicated. There was a moment not too long ago, admits the 19-year-old, when she was truly miserable.

After her debut single, “Ocean Eyes,” became a viral hit on #SoundCloud in 2015, she signed with Darkroom Records and landed a deal with Interscope.

But she felt ill-equipped to deal with the sudden onslaught of attention. Which isn’t surprising, because the music industry didn’t see her coming either — a teenager with such a distinctive look and sound that mass appeal was in no way inevitable.

I'm just a kid, and Finneas is my big brother.
“I hated going outside. I hated going to events. I hated being recognized. I hated the internet having a bunch of eyes on me. I just wanted to be doing teenager sh—,” says Eilish, who was 16 when she toured her four-times platinum debut album, When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?

See something? We see nothing. Oh, those?
She grew depressed, and her body didn’t react well to the stress; she was constantly coming down with laryngitis or developing fevers. And she was surrounded by adults. The only people her age were in the audience, which had become both physically and emotionally untouchable.

Jewish men sing “Wish You Were Here”

Can Orthodox Jews sing on the street for change? Surely the tribal God of the Jews is anti-busking? But maybe it doesn't mind if it's a good sad song like "Wish You Were Here [Sid Barrett]" by Pink Floyd.

Muslim girls rock: VOB “I Wear My Skin”

(Voice of Baceprot, July 5, 2021) “Back then, this song took us to the final of one of the biggest band competitions in Garut, our hometown. At the time, we were so proud to be heard even though we didn’t win. A few years after, we were able to play the song live at shows in Jakarta and other places outside of Java. We always enjoy the song... Until one day, a clip of us performing the song became one of the highlights in a news segment on a German television station, yes, a country that we only know from its location on a world map. An outpouring of appreciation came from people who did not care where we were from. From that moment onwards, we believe even more that music could traverse distance and unite differences.” Taken from Voice of Baceprot's EP The Other Side of Metalism.

Mind Like Fire Unbound (sutra)

Dhr. Seven (ed.) Aggi-Vacchagotta Sutra: "To Vacchagotta on Fire" (Middle Length Discourses, MN 72) based on Ven. Thanissaro (trans.), accesstoinsight.org, Wisdom Quarterly
  1. "...'After death a supremely enlightened being exists'...
  2. "...'after death a supremely enlightened being does not exist'...
  3. "...'after death a supremely enlightened being both exists and does not exist'...
  4. "...'after death a supremely enlightened being neither exists nor does not exist'...
What's a warrior wanderer to do?
"[These questions, no matter what the answer, do] not lead to disenchantment, dispassion, cessation, to tranquility, direct knowledge, full enlightenment (awakening), nirvana."

"Does Master Gautama hold any position at all?"

"Vaccha, a 'position' is something a supremely enlightened being has done away with. What a supremely enlightened being sees is this:
  • 'Such is form, such its origination, such its disappearance;
  • such are feelings, such their origination, such their disappearance;
  • such are perceptions, such their origination, such their disappearance;
  • such are mental formations (fabrications), such their origination, such their disappearance;
  • such are consciousnesses, such their origination, such their disappearance.'
"Because of this, I say, a supremely enlightened being — with the passing, fading away, cessation, letting go, and relinquishment of all construings, all thoughts, all I-making, all mine-making, and obsessions with pride/conceit — is released by no longer clinging [by detaching from all sustenance clung to the way fire clings to a fuel, released by letting go]."

"But, Master Gautama, the meditator whose mind is released in this way, Where does that person reappear?"

"Vaccha, 'reappear' does not apply."

"In that case, Master Gautama, that person does not reappear?"

"Vaccha, 'does not reappear' does not apply."

"...both does and does not reappear?"

"...does not apply?"

"...neither does nor does not reappear?"

"...does not apply?"

"How is it, Master Gautama, when Master Gautama is asked if the [fully enlightened] meditator
  • reappears...
  • does not reappear...
  • both does and does not reappear...
  • neither does nor does not reappear,
"he answers, '...does not apply' in each case? Master Gautama, I am perplexed. I am confused. The little clarity I had from our earlier discussion is now unclear."

"Vaccha, of course you're perplexed. Of course you're confused. Deep, Vaccha, is this Dhamma (Doctrine, Teaching, Understanding, Path), hard to see, hard to realize, tranquil, subtle, beyond the scope of mere reasoning (or conjecture), sublime, to-be-experienced [only] by the wise.

"For those holding other views (dhammas, doctrines), other practices, other guides, other aims, other teachers, it is difficult to know. This being the case, I shall question you. Answer as you see fit:

"Vaccha, what do you think: If there were a fire burning in front of you, would you know, 'There is a fire burning in front of me'?"

"...yes..."

"And suppose, Vaccha, someone were to ask you, 'This fire burning in front of you, dependent on what is it burning?' If asked, how would you reply?"

"...I would reply, 'This fire burning in front of me is doing so dependent on grass and wood as its sustenance (fuel).'"

"If the fire burning in front of you were to go out, would you know, 'This fire burning in front of me has gone out'?"

"...yes..."

"Now suppose someone were to ask you, 'This fire that has gone out in front of you, where has it gone from here:
  1. east,
  2. west,
  3. north, or
  4. south?'
"If asked this, how would you reply?"

"Master Gautama, this [question] does not apply. Any fire burning dependent on the sustenance of grass and wood, being deprived of further nourishment — from having consumed that fuel and not being offered any other — is classified simply as '[gone] out'."

"Even so, Vaccha, any physical form by which one describing a supremely enlightened being would have to say that that supremely enlightened being has abandoned [all sustenance], destroyed it at the root, made it like a palmyra stump [which when topped off is incapable of regrowing], deprived it of its supporting conditions, become no longer destined for any future arising (reappearance, rebirth).

"Freed from the description of form, Vaccha, a supremely enlightened being is deep, unfathomable, boundless, like the sea. 'Reappears' does not apply. 'Does not reappear' does not apply. 'Both does and does not reappear' does not apply. 'Neither reappears nor does not reappear' does not apply.

"Any feeling... Any perception... Any mental formation... Any consciousness by which one describing a supremely enlightened being would describe that person, the supremely enlightened being has abandoned, destroyed at the root, made like a palmyra stump, deprived of supporting conditions, become no longer destined for any future arising.

"Freed from the category of consciousness, Vaccha, a supremely enlightened being is deep, unfathomable, boundless, like the sea. 'Reappears' does not apply. 'Does not reappear' does not apply. 'Both does and does not reappear' does not apply. 'Neither reappears nor does not reappear' does not apply."

When this was said, the wanderer Vacchagotta said to the Blessed One: "Master Gautama, it is as if there were a great sal tree not far from a village or town:

"From impermanence, its branches and leaves would wear away, its bark would wear away, its sapwood would wear away, so that later — freed of branches, leaves, bark, and sapwood — it would stand as pure heartwood.

"In the same way, Master Gautama's words are freed of branches, leaves, bark, and sapwood and stand as pure heartwood.

"Magnificent, Master Gautama, magnificent! It is just as if one were to set upright what had been overturned,  or to reveal what was hidden, or to show the way to one who were lost, or were to carry a lamp into the dark so that those with eyes could see forms!

"In the same way has Master Gautama — through many lines of reasoning — made the Doctrine (Dhamma) clear.

I go for guidance to Master Gautama, to the Dhamma, and to the Sangha. May Master Gautama remember me as a lay follower who has gone to him for guidance, from this day forward, for as long as life may last."

Rain! Downpour on sunny Los Angeles (video)

(KABC) LOS ANGELES- Large swaths of [formerly sunny, drought stricken] Southern California were seeing heavy rain early Monday morning, with thunderstorms and hail possible in parts of the Inland Empire [just east of LA County].

Consistent downpours were hitting foothill communities in Los Angeles County as the band of rain moved toward the ocean. Los Angeles and Orange counties will see a high of 82 degrees on Monday, with a 40% chance of thunderstorms.

The National Weather Service says hail the size of half dollars was falling Sunday in parts of San Bernardino and Riverside counties in the afternoon. A severe thunderstorm warning was issued, bringing lightning and possible flash flooding.

Hundreds of lightning strikes were recorded in the region.

On Monday, the Inland Empire and local valleys can again expect to see a 50% chance of thunderstorms, with a high temperature around 89 degrees.

Desert communities such as Palm Springs were also experiencing heavy rainfall and thunderstorms Monday morning. A flash food warning was in effect for most of the region.

Moon's natural "wobble" could bring coastal floods as sea levels rise
(NBC News, July 16, 2021) As the moon's orbit around the planet allegedly changes shape, a natural occurrence that happens about every 18.6 years, there is predicted to be an increase in coastal flooding as sea levels rise. Prof. Hakeem Oluseyi discusses the potential of the phenomenon to create flooding in coastal areas, like doomed parts of Florida.

Ami-Tofu, Kwan Yin Tofu? (monastic food)

The Food Ranger in China; Jeon Kwan; Dhr. Seven, CC Liu, Amber Larson, Wisdom Quarterly
VIDEO: Ven. Jeong Kwan on how food is a pathway to enlightenment  (Jeon Kwan)

Eating Chinese Buddhist monastic food in Chengdu at Wenshu Temple 文殊院
(The Food Ranger. 1/25/15) Exploring Chengdu's Buddhist temples is always an enjoyable activity. What about trying the food that the monastics eat? It's time to try the food surrounding Wenshu Temple and inside the temple itself in Chengdu. Food Ranger, ExpressVPN, IG, FB. Location: Wenshuyuan (文殊院), Chengdu. The food outside the temple is awesome. Enter around noon or 5:00 pm and lineup inside the temple for FREE food, which is not as spicy and flavorful as the street food vendors, but it's amazing to eat inside and get a glimpse of what monks and nuns eat.

Ami-Tofu, your Guanyin Tofu is ready
Guanyin Tofu, dried, a China-protected geographical indication product (chihuoclub.com)

Hindu Avalokita now Guanyin
Guanyin Tofu is golden with an appetizing fragrance. It's savory and chewy, sturdy and sweet and popular in Chiquo, Chongqing, Chengdu, and Guangzhou, China.

It's an odd name because when I was staying at a Buddhist nunnery in New Mexico, near Yogi Bhajan's Yogi Tea Ashram, the common greeting was Ami-tofu (like Hare Krishnas saying Haribol! or WW II Germans and my neighbor, Robbie, shouting Heil Himmler!). And I always thought, "Tofu?"

All of our food was delicious and vegetarian, healthy and hearty in the alpine-zone snow, so full of diversity as is common in the thousand-year tradition of Chinese temple food.

All hail Kwan Yin! (Guanyin)
But Amitabha Buddha was what the greeting, not doufu. So why do they say tofu -- and not Guanyin Tofu? I didn't dare ask.

The Western Paradise historical Buddha from Afghanistan (Gandhara) and India has been supplanted by Amitabha in China.

Amitoufu is a "new and improved Buddha," a celestial God, more Hindu savior than self-realized human showing the way to liberation from all suffering by example.

Kwan Yin is a Madonna with child
The "prayers" and "vespers" in the meditation hall and before eating seemed to have more to do with Guanyin Pusa, or the Bodhisattva of Compassion Kwan Yin.

And for my one-month stay we had an enlightened Western monk, who fluently spoke Chinese, Sanskrit, and about a dozen other European languages.

More than my meditation, which grew increasingly long until I could sit for eight hours straight with no difficulty, which alarmed the nuns. The abbess, who had positioned me right in front of her to keep an eye on me, would send them to fetch me when it was time to eat. Most newbies find it tough to sit one hour and are sure to be found in the kitchen waiting first in line for every meal.

Me (in my imagination) sitting in the snow
I was interested in the food but more interested in this newfound power of sitting still. I had just come from Chaung Yen Monastery in Upstate New York with this same teacher.

The nuns and I had to shovel powdery snow, and that couldn't wait. Or it would melt in the day's sun and refreeze at night into dense ice. I got offered more and better food, but made the faux pas of going back for seconds and thirds. It'll be brought to you for that if one simply waits.

Nothing is Impossible, because Amazon delivers
We had colorful veggies, brown rice, black rice, mushrooms, roasted seaweed, trail mix, a variety of tofus, health powders, lotus seeds, almond milk, granola, savory soups, steamy noodles, goji berries, attempts at Indian food, one five-spice curry in particular, roots and tubers like yams and turnips, exotic botanicals and spices...

I got to thinking I could grow super healthy and immune to the cold eating like this and shoveling, sitting or doing the morning qigong exercises, yoga, and developing samadhi like Bruce Lee and Shaolin masters must have developed.

A Man is an Island? 3-Day Island Solo Survival

Field Days; Doggone, Ananda (Dharma Buddhist Meditation), Pat Mac (eds.), Wisdom Quarterly
I am now an island unto myself, but the sutra says take the Dharma as my island and lamp.

(Field Days, Ep. 29) 3-day solo survival expedition (no food, no water, no shelter) on an island in Indonesia with only a pocket knife and batteries for the camera.

SUTRA: "An Island Unto Oneself"
Maurice O'Connell Walshe (trans.), Attadipa Sutra edited by Dhr. Seven, Wisdom Quarterly
Be an island/lamp unto yourselves.
"Meditators, be islands unto yourselves [Note 1], be your own guide, having no other. Let the Dharma be an island/lamp and a guide to you, having no other.

"Those who are islands unto themselves...are wise investigate to the very heart of things [2]:

"'What is the source of [dukkha, disappointment] sorrow, lamentation, pain, grief, and despair? How do they arise?' [What is their origin?]

"Here, meditators, the uninstructed worldling [continued as in SN 22.7] Change occurs in this person's body, and it becomes different. On account of this change and difference, sorrow, lamentation, pain, grief, and despair arise.
  • [The same is stated about 'feelings,' 'perceptions,' 'mental formations,'  and 'consciousness'].
"But seeing [3] the body's impermanence, its changeability, its waning [4], its ceasing, one says, 'Formerly, as now, all bodies were impermanent, unsatisfactory, and subject to change.'

"Thus, seeing this as it really is, with purified insight, one abandons all sorrow, lamentation, pain, grief, and despair. One is not worried at their abandonment but, unworried, lives at ease. And thus living at ease, one is said to be 'assuredly delivered'" [5].
  • [The same is stated about 'feelings,' 'perceptions,' 'mental formations,' and 'consciousness'].
NOTES
1. Atta-dipa: Dipa means both "island" (Sanskrit dvipa) and "lamp" (Sanskrit dipa), but the meaning "island" is well established here. The "self" referred to is of course the unmetaphysical pronoun "oneself": cf. SN 3.8, n. 1. 2. It is necessary to withdraw, to be "an island unto oneself," at least for a time (as any meditator knows), not for "selfish" reasons but precisely in order to make this profound introspective investigation.

In another sense, Buddhists would of course agree with John Donne that "No man is an island."

3. As Woodward remarks in KS [Book of the Kindred Sayings, translation of the Samyutta Nikaya, Vol. III, PTS 1924], one would expect to find here the words which he inserts in the text: "The well-taught Ariyan [noble] disciple," as in many passages. If one in fact sees these things and reflects as said in the text, one will cease to be a "worldling."

4. Viraga: Elsewhere translated as "dispassion" (SN 12.16, n. 2), also has this meaning.

5. Tadanganibbuto means rather more than Woodward's "one who is rid of all that."

Cartoons: Cow Dharma for the "Pico Rivera 41"

Billboard honors cows who escaped slaughterhouse

(CNS) “Remember The Pico Rivera 41” and “Save Animals” are messages displayed prominently on the billboard, located on the corner of Beverly Blvd. and Di Maria Road, near the horrifying Manning Beef slaughterhouse.

A billboard has gone up in Pico Rivera to call attention to the recent slaughterhouse escape of 41 cows that ended with 38 of the animals captured and brutally executed then cut up to be sold as “meat,” one shot to death by a sheriff’s deputy, and two saved by an animal sanctuary.

PICO RIVERA (Los Angeles), California — A billboard has gone up in Pico Rivera to call attention to the recent slaughterhouse prison break of 41 female cows [all cows are female otherwise, if males, are bulls] that ended with 38 of the animals captured and chopped up for meat, one fatally shot by a killer cop, and two saved.

“These cows and animals like them want to live like we do. The connection needs to be made that it is not ‘what’ people are eating, it is ‘who’ they are eating,” said Ellen Dent, co-founder of Animal Alliance Network, the nonprofit organization that came up with the idea and secured the billboard.

“After personally visiting the slaughterhouse many times while advocating for the cows to be saved, I knew that this was a pivotal moment in time that had the ability to inspire significant change,” Dent said.

Several other animal helpers and vegan organizations also got involved, including Peace 4 Animals and World Animal News, which helped design and sponsor the ad.

The billboard features June B. Free, one of the surviving cows who escaped the slaughterhouse and now lives at Farm Sanctuary. The other cow is named Susan. Both names were chosen in honor of Farm Sanctuary donors.

“Taking action to save the lives of animals is the most important thing that we can do to create change,” said Katie Cleary, founder and president of Peace 4 Animals and World Animal News.

Can a cowboy convert to vegetarian peace?
“This billboard serves as a reminder that animals are sentient beings that should be treated with compassion and respect. With so many delicious plant-based food options now available, there is simply no justification for cows, or any animals, to be senselessly slaughtered for their meat.”

The animals escaped on June 22 when an employee mistakenly left a door open. They stampeded through residential streets, causing some property damage.

One cow was murdered by a sheriff’s deputy after allegedly charging at a family, and one was saved two days later in South El Monte, about five miles away, and sent to Farm Sanctuary in Acton, California, thanks to the efforts of famed songwriter Diane Warren and the group Animal Alliance Network.

"I wrote down 'peyote burger'" (Dan Piraro/Revelations — Bizarro.com)
.
“Seeing these cows escaping their horrible fate broke my heart,” Warren said then. “They knew what awaited them. These are smart, empathetic, beautiful souls [stuck in the same karmic cycle as humans].”

Eight days after the original escape, the last of the cows was spotted running under the Pomona (60) Freeway in South El Monte. She was captured later in the day in La Puente and also sent to Farm Sanctuary.

Farm Sanctuary representative Meredith Turner-Smith told City News Service on Wednesday that both animals are doing well in their new homes.

“They are settling in well as they go through a routine 30-day quarantine period to ensure that they are healthy. Afterwards, they’ll join our main cow herd in Acton where they’ll be able to form bonds with our other rescued cow residents,” she said.

“Susan continues to recover from an acute injury, and June is still standing guard over her. They keep an eye on our staff but are no longer displaying the fear-based response, typical of animals rescued from the trauma of the animal agriculture industry, of stomping hooves or throwing dirt behind them,” Turner-Smith said.

“They are eating a lot of food and drinking lots of water. Like all animals, June and Susan wanted to live — and they fought hard for that right. Now, instead of waking up to the sounds and smells of [death in] a slaughterhouse, they’ll only know the peace and freedom of sanctuary.” More

"Saint" Fauci won't stop lying: Sen. Rand Paul

"Saint" Fauci "demolished" by Senator Rand Paul in "testy" US Congress exchange
(Sky News Australia, July 24, 2021) Sky News Host James Morrow says Republican Rand Paul "wasn't having any of Dr. Fauci's attempts to redefine gain-of-function research" as the senator proceeded to "demolish" his claims amid a "pretty testy" exchange this week in US Congress.

Morrow said Senator Paul accused Dr. Tony Fauci, the "liberal left's secular saint" of pandemics [AIDS, SARS-2 Covid-19, and Delta 01], of "lying" to cover up his role as head of America's National Institutes of Health (NIH) in "funding" coronavirus "gain-of-function" research at China's Wuhan Institute of Virology.

Dr. Fauci tried to reject Senator Paul's claims on the grounds that what was conducted at the labs had been judged by "qualified staff up and down the chain" as not being "gain-of-function" research.

Morrow said Senator Paul "demolished" these claims by saying viruses "in nature that only infect animals were manipulated in the Wuhan lab to 'gain the function' of infecting humans."

"We know from Dr. Fauci's own emails that from the very start of the pandemic he was concerned that gain of function research his agency was associated with could have been responsible for the pandemic," Morrow said.

"After the exchange, Senator Paul said he was going to ask the Department of Justice for a criminal referral into Fauci and whether Fauci lied to Congress.

"It may not be possible to bring back those [4 million] lives or livelihoods lost to the pandemic, but there may just be some justice for them after all."
