A pig-butchering scam (Chinese 杀猪盘, sha zhu pan [2] or shazhupan [3], literally "killing pig game")[1] is a type of online scam where victims [usually men on dating sites] are encouraged to make increasing financial contributions over a long period, usually in the form of cryptocurrency [4].

Such scams are commonplace on social media and dating apps [5] and often involve elements of catfishing (fictitious online persona scam), investment fraud, and romance scams.
