WQ meeting at KROQ Comedy Show (3/13)

(OCV) What is stand-up comedy? Dave Chappelle explains with some examples for Johnny

WHAT HAPPENED?
The club filled up with lots of hooting and hollering patrons eager to see Johnny make a mockery of himself as he dies on stage. But there are many other standup comedians doing the heavy lifting. Vanessa actually dressed up for the evening, wearing a very low-cut blouse that makes her visibly uncomfortable, getting hit on by Blind Charlie's date. She's touching and rubbing away while High T Vanessa visibly squirms and tries to get her to stop. Jake looks like a pregnant B with a small dog strapped to his belly as he yells. The poor thing must be deaf by now as his nervous human companion tries to fade into the woodwork. Klein is sitting up front, but Ally is missing in action, having joined DJ Omar Kahn for a private confab in oblivion. The crowd roars as Johnny is forced to take the stage, six inches off the ground, with a stream of drinkers repeatedly heading for the washroom to see or smell what kind of mess Jake has made. He doesn't bomb! The crowd loves him. He's a simpleton but very affable, and he seems to have prepared some material that he didn't practice on the radio show. He even has a guitar hidden away, which he pulls out in Minute 4 to peals of "Tamales Tamales!" But he has a new song, maybe prepared for the occasion. His girlfriend in skulking in the back surprised to see the crowd participation and encouragement. He was set to fail as he does on most episodes of "Johnny Doesn't Know," but his ego has survived the ordeal. Klein cuts out and by the time Jake stumbles onto the stage as the headliners, the crickets are chirping and the crowd is getting antsy. He doesn't seem well prepared, considering himself an old hat at this, he's sure he can just wing it by memory and a cheat sheet. The crowd tries to help, but Vanessa puts down her phone and it just gets worse and worse. Meanwhile, the WQ meeting has moved to the NoHo Buddhist Temple on Oxnard, the Sarathchandra Buddhist Center. The most amazing this to come from the evening are the knowledge that The Good Nite is full of free standup, music, and open mics most nights and WQ has set its next meeting for the Kwan Yin Meditation Temple in Monrovia, hugging the foothills next to Old Town.

World Champ MJF roast Klein. Ally. Show. | Friday the 13th
(KROQ) Streamed live morning of March 13th. It's the Klein.Ally.Show. (KAS) on KROQ.com. There's snow in New York and a heatwave in Los Angeles as we all head out for the big comedy show with Host Dirty Jake Dill.

On today's show: Jewish wrestler Maxwell Jacob Friedman (MJF) joins KAS in studio, "Johnny Doesn't Know," "5-10-20," and more.

It's another Friday the 13th and another day of not-so-gentle ribbing, this time from All Elite wrestling star MJF (Maxwell Jacob Friedman). He stopped by the studio while gearing up to defend his AEW World Championship title. He mercilessly roasts Klein's new nose, Ally's lack of hygiene, Dirty Jake's virginity, Columbian Vanessa's odd voice, and Low T Johnny the Postman's everything.
The show also brings back 5-10-20, challenging listeners to place three KROQ alt rock songs in order: One from 5 years ago, 10 years ago, and 20 years ago.

The show also hears Low T Johnny's final ideas before his big 5-minute [self-immolation] set for tonight at the Good Nite in NoHo at 7:00 pm. Be there!

Today being Good Luck Friday the 13th, Wisdom Quarterly: American Buddhist Journal is meeting to see stand-up comic Low T Johnny from KROQ's KAS Jake Dill (Instagram) is putting on a comedy show at The Good Nite Bar tonight at 7:00 pm.

Naomi Klein: End Times Fascism (video)

Naomi Klein on Trump, Elon Musk, Far Right, and "End Times Fascism"
There's no underworld below us.
(Democracy Now!) May 5, 2025: An alliance between the far right and Silicon Valley oligarchs has given rise to a form of "end times fascism," says journalist Prof. Naomi Klein.

She details in a recent essay she co-authored with Astra Taylor on how many wealthy elites are preparing for the end of the world even as they contribute to growing inequality, climate crisis, and political instability.

Klein says that while billionaires dream of escaping to bunkered enclaves or even to space, Pres. DJ Trump and other right-wing leaders are turning their countries into militarized fortress states to keep out immigrants from abroad and ramp up authoritarian control domestically.

Naomi Klein: What are we going to do?

Help us. We're Jews.
The day after the Trump election, the New York Times wrote: “America stands on the precipice of an authoritarian style of governance never before seen in its 248-year-old history.”

For many, [this kind of fearmongering after] the results of November 5th confirmed the view that we are in dark times. So the big question is:

What are we going to do? We can wallow in self-pity and depression, or we can find kindred spirits and organize and form alliances to not just resist the repression to come but promote progressive causes.

The Shock Doctrine: Rise of Disaster Capitalism
As feminist writer Rebecca Solnit [who is inexplicably unable to pronounce the word "women" (\wih-myn\) yet no one corrects her] says:

“Not acting is a luxury those in immediate danger do not have, and despair is something they cannot afford. But despair is all around us, telling us the problems are insoluble, that we are not strong enough, our efforts are in vain, and no one really cares.”

Hope, Solnit says, counteracts cynicism and pessimism.

(The Jimmy Dore Show) There is proof that Trump was targeted for assassination by the Deep State, proxies, or a patsy named "Iran"?

Naomi Klein: How Israel weaponizes trauma

Presidential candidate Jill Stein, what's the solution? What are you saying, Naomi, it in a nutshell?

Naomi Klein: Israel has weaponized Oct. 7th trauma to justify its genocide on Gaza
U.S. traumatizes its population, too. It's part of MK-Ultra explains Robert Morningstar
.
(Democracy Now!) Oct. 22, 2024: More than a year since Israel launched its pre-planned genocidal war-of-erasure on Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank using Oct. 7th as its pretext.

Do Jews exercise disproportionate influence?
DN! speaks with the award-winning author, professor, journalist, and activist Naomi Klein, who says a "trauma industry" has emerged to keep Israeli society permanently in crisis in order to justify the Israeli military's expansionist wars, apartheid, settler colonial project, war crimes, and human rights abuses.

"Though the Israeli government likes to frame everything that is happening now as a response to October 7, this is a preexisting agenda," says Klein, whose latest essay for The Guardian explores how Israel "has made trauma a weapon of war."

This is about extermination of the "Arabs," the Palestinians in the way
of Greater Israel's future empire in the Middle East. Iran is next.
Naomi Klein on election, Trump/Musk misinfo, and "real conspiracy" of money 'n power
(Democracy Now!) Oct. 22, 2024: This is a continuation of today's conversation with acclaimed Jewish author Prof. Naomi Klein.

She says candidate Kamala is "running an extremely high-risk, dangerous campaign" for the White House and "trying to win without the [Democratic] base."

Klein faults VP Harris for largely ignoring Progressives she needs to turn out on Nov. 5 as she courts Republicans, even as The Donald's authoritarian threats to go after the "enemies within" could put many people at risk if he is reelected.

"She's told us we're irrelevant, and Trump is telling us that he's going to round us up," says Klein.

"Monopoly" created to show evils of capitalism

"How I Built This" (Planet Money, 1/25/23); Ananda; Ashley Wells (eds.), Wisdom Quarterly

"Monopoly" is a board game built around capitalism, so is its origin story
He used to have a monocle (Mandela Effect)
"Monopoly" is one of the best-selling board games in history. It's been an iconic part of American life: a cheap pastime during the Great Depression, a reminder of home for soldiers during WW II, an American export during its rise as a global superpower, and a best-seller during the pandemic.

The game's staying power may in part be because of a strong American myth — the idea that anyone, with just a little cash, can rise from rags to riches.

Author Mary Pilon: The Monopolists
Mary Pilon
, author of The Monopolists: Obsession, Fury, and the Scandal Behind the World's Favorite Board Game, dug into the origin story that was once included with every box of the game:
  • A man named Charles Darrow was unemployed and came up with the game to pass the time.
He took Monopoly to the game company Parker Brothers in 1934 and eventually became a millionaire.

But there's another origin story – a very different one that promotes a very different and negative image of financial exploitation capitalism (with two sets of starkly different rules on how to play it).

That story shows how a critique of capitalism (and private property) grew from a seed of an idea in a rebellious young woman's mind into a game legendary for its celebration of wealth at all costs.

15th anniversary of US War on Iraq (video)

Amy Goodman, Denis Moynihan (democracynow.org, March 22, 2018); Ashley Wells, Pfc. Sandoval, Seth Auberon, Sheldon S. (eds.), Wisdom Quarterly

Medea Benjamin, co-founder of CodePink.org and author of the book Kingdom of the Unjust: Behind the U.S.-Saudi Connection.

In his first foreign trip abroad as president, Trump traveled this weekend to Saudi Arabia, where he signed a series of arms deals totaling $110 billion of weapons transfers.

This comes in addition to more than $115 billion offered in arms deals to Saudi Arabia by Pres. Obama during his time in office.

The deal also includes precision-guided munitions, which the Obama administration had stopped selling Saudi Arabia out of fear they would be used to bomb civilians amid the ongoing Saudi-led bombing campaign in Yemen.

Since 2015, 10,000 people have been killed in the ongoing fighting, which has also decimated the country’s health, water, sewage, and sanitation systems. The arms deal includes tanks, artillery, ships, helicopters, a missile defense system, and cybersecurity technology. More
Fifteen years have passed since Pres. George W. Bush, Vice Pres. Dick Cheney, and a coterie of neoconservatives, enabled by mainstream media cheerleaders, launched the U.S. invasion of Iraq with a murderous bombardment of Baghdad they branded “shock and awe.”

Far from delivering the promised freedom and democracy and exposing stockpiles of weapons of mass destruction, this illegal war killed, wounded, and displaced millions of civilians.
Column default1More than 4,500 U.S. service members were killed, seven of them as recently as last week.

Death and destruction on this scale would be more than enough to crush any society; yet, the Iraqi people have persevered, countering war with determination and hope.

“We have to name it as a criminal war,” Zahra Ali told the “Democracy Now!” news hour, “the destruction of Iraq as a functioning state and society.” A French-Iraqi sociologist, she was raised in Paris because her Iraqi parents fled Saddam Hussein as political exiles. “The post-2003 Iraqi regime has proven to be very anti-democratic,” she added.

Matt Howard enlisted in the Marines before Sept. 11, 2001. “I watched the invasion from Okinawa, Japan, where I was stationed at the time, and had a gnawing sense of dread that we were making a decision we could never step back from,” he said on “Democracy Now!”

Deployed twice to Iraq, in 2004 and 2005, by 2008 he was back in the U.S., opposed to war. He joined Iraq Veterans Against the War [IVAW], and now is co-director of the group, which recently changed its name to About Face. More

People's Climate Events
From Los Angeles' linking arms on Wilshire Blvd. on Saturday, Sept. 20, 2014 to New York's march against capitalism and "flood Wall Street" to protest government inaction on climate on Sunday, Sept. 21: THE PEOPLE'S CLIMATE MARCH.
  (DemocracyNow.org, Sept. 18, 2014)

People's Climate MarchAt least 100,000 people are expected to take part in the People’s Climate March in New York City on Sunday.   More than 2,000 "People’s Climate" events are planned worldwide in 150 countries. And on Monday, climate activists are planning to stage a mass sit-in in the financial district in Manhattan in an action dubbed "FLOOD WALL STREET."

We'll save you, Earth!
The actions are taking place ahead of Tuesday’s one-day United Nations Climate Summit. DN! speaks to acclaimed journalist Naomi Klein, author of the new book This Changes Everything: Capitalism vs. the Climate being launched today, about the upcoming climate activism as well as the global grassroots movement dubbed "Blockadia," which is fighting fossil fuel extraction from Canada to Nigeria to Greece. Watch Part 1
  • The NYC book release of Naomi Klein's This Changes Everything is sold out, but watch it free on live stream.
Corporations prefer profits over people and plunder over the planet.

The solution? According to author and artist Stephanie McMillan, it's Capitalism Must Die!

Capitalism Must Die! (Stephanie McMillan)
Why? "There's an evil force dominating the people of the world and destroying the planet [Bhumi, Gaia, Earth, Tierra] itself. This force is our enemy and the enemy of all life. But before we can defeat it, we have to correctly identify it. We have to understand its underlying structure, how it works, and who controls it in order to pinpoint its vulnerabilities and effectively fight against it."

We agree, and it's not just us. Naomi Klein, author of Shock Doctrine: The Rise of Disaster Capitalism and the new This Changes Everything on climate change also singles out capitalism -- at least the aggressive form of it practiced in the USA. This is sometimes called "disaster capitalism" or the "create a problem then sell them a solution" model.

Capitalism vs. the Climate

This Changes Everything: Capitalism vs. the Climate arrived in stores on Tuesday (Sept. 16). For more information, tour dates, or to buy the book, see: thischangeseverything.org. What's it about?

This Changes Everything
Forget everything you think you know about global warming. The really "inconvenient truth" is that it’s not about carbon [that whole carbon market is just a way to make money by selling pollution credits!]. It’s about capitalism!

The convenient truth is that we can seize this existential crisis [a threat to our very existence] to transform our failed economic system and build something radically better.

In Naomi Klein's most provocative book yet, she tackles the most profound threat humanity has ever faced -- the war our economic model is waging against life on Earth. More

(Big Think) Question: Why did you write Shock Doctrine?

Naomi Klein: It came out of reporting that I was doing in Iraq after the [U.S.] invasion [and] the first year of occupation. But I guess it dates back earlier than that. I happen to have been in Argentina making a documentary film when the [U.S.] war [o]n Iraq began. And it was a really amazing time to be in Latin America....
