Youth Sutra, The Buddha's Diet Plan

.
Anti-fat propaganda poster, USA, 1942
Want guaranteed weight loss and better health? What if there were a "Royal Buddhist Diet"? Well, there is and it's hard, but it really works.

King Pasenadi of ancient Kosala was very fat.

He waddled around his kingdom, belly swollen, feet sore, short of breath. One day, after eating a bucket of rich, royal food, he found the Buddha and sat beside him, panting like a sweaty mess.

Rich foods are royal. Healthy foods are priceless
The Buddha gently commented, "When one stays mindful, one will know how much one has eaten and what amount is enough. Then all of that person's afflictions will become slender and one will age gently and protect one's life."

A Brahmin youth from the king's retinue was standing nearby. King Pasenadi instructed him to memorize the Buddha's words and recite them whenever the king was about to eat.

As soon as King Pasenadi learned to pay bare attention to his eating -- to savor it and remain aware of chewing and tasting and swallowing it -- he was able to delight in a single cup of rice.

[So as not to body shame the royal, let's just say he was voluptuous, zoftig, big boned, had a glandular condition, metabolic syndrome, was prediabetic, loved flying his freak flag and doing his own thing, had too much plastic xenoestrogen in his body and brain from the environment, ate too much, and had poor impulse control from early traumatic childhood events that made his regulation of dopamine a challenge.]

NATIONAL STRAWBERRY DAY (Feb. 27th) adds an extra aphrodisiac to the American "month of love." Devilishly sweet, delightfully low in calories, strawberries (which are not really berries though avocados are) are the perfect food to feel naughty and nice at the same time. Grown both around the U.S. and around the world almost year-round, we’re never far from a supplier of this tasty tongue-tickler to celebrate!

Going vegan saves the animals and the planet.
In time King Pasenadi became slender and strong, full of energy and beautiful. And as he sat stroking his slender limbs, he said:

"The Buddha has twice shown me compassion -- for my benefit now and for my benefit in the future."

What is this diet regimen called? "Mindful eating." What is "mindfulness"? Let's ask Ven. Analayo:
.
The Buddha looks too young
Mahavira: The Buddha was 35
In the Dahara Sutta, SN 3.1, King Pasenadi hints that the Buddha is too young, so young in fact that, compared to other prominent teachers, he must not yet be fully enlightened.

The Buddha explains to the king that there are four things in the world that must not be taken lightly on account of their youth:
  1. a noble,
  2. a snake,
  3. a fire,
  4. a holy person.
It was this discourse (S.i.68f.) that resulted in the conversion of King Pasenadi, which Mahayana refers to as the Kumāradrstānta Sutra (Rockhill: p.49):

Youth Sutra: Too Young?
Ven. Sujato (trans), Dahara Sutta (SN 3.1), suttacentral.net edited by Wisdom Quarterly

Thus have I heard. Once when the Buddha was staying near Sāvatthī in Jeta’s Grove, in Anāthapiṇḍika’s monastery, King Pasenadi of Kosala arrived and exchanged pleasant greetings with him.

When their greetings and polite conversation were over, the king sat respectfully to one side and said to the Buddha: “Does the worthy Gotama claim to have awakened to supreme enlightenment?”

“If anyone should rightly say of someone that he has awakened to supreme enlightenment, it is of me that one should say it. For, great king, I have awakened to supremely perfect enlightenment.”

The king replied, “There are those wandering ascetics and [temple-bound] Brahmin priests who lead a monastic order and spiritual community (sangha) and tutor that community. They are well-known, famous founders of religions (dharmas), deemed enlightened (holy) by many, such as:
Little serpent (naga) can become mighty dragon
“I also asked them whether they claimed to have awakened to supreme and perfect enlightenment, but they made no such claim. So why do you, given that you are so young and only [relatively] recently gone forth [into the left home life of a wandering sannyasin]?”

“Great king, these four should not be looked down upon nor disparaged because they are young:
“These four should not be looked down upon nor disparaged because they are young.”

That is what the Buddha said. Then the Enlightened One, the Teacher, went on to say [in verse]:

“A person should not despise
a noble of impeccable lineage,
high-born and famous,
just because such a one is young.

For it is possible that that lord of humans,
as a royal heir, will gain the throne.
And in anger will execute a royal punishment
and have one violently beaten.
Hence, avoid such a noble
for the sake of life.

Whether in village or wilderness,
wherever a snake is seen,
one should not look down on it
nor despise it for its youth.

With its rainbow of colors,
a snake of fiery breath slithers along.
It lashes out and bites a fool,
male and female alike.
Hence avoid it
for the sake of life.

A fire devours a huge amount,
a conflagration with a blackened trail.
One should not look down on it
just because it is young.

For once it gets fuel
it will become a huge inferno.
It will lash out and burn a fool,
male and female alike.
Hence avoid it
for the sake of life.

When a forest is burned by fire,
a conflagration with a blackened trail,
shoots will spring up there again,
with the passing of days and nights.

But if a wanderer endowed with virtue
burns you with holy power,
you will have neither sons nor cattle,
nor will your heirs inherit wealth.
Childless and heirless you become,
like a palmyra palm-tree stump.

That is why a wise person,
seeing what is beneficial,
will always treat these four properly:
a snake, a fire,
a famous noble,
and a holy person endowed with ethics.”

When this was said, King Pasenadi of Kosala exclaimed:

I've got my eye on you, Little Fire
“Excellent, sir, excellent! As if one were righting what was overturned, or revealing the hidden, or pointing out the path to one who was lost, or lighting a lamp in the dark so people with eyes could see what is there. Just so the Buddha has made the Teaching clear in many ways. I go for guidance to the Buddha, to the Teaching (Dhamma), and to the [noble] Saṅgha. From this day forward, may the Buddha remember me as a lay follower who has gone for guidance as long as life lasts.”

Stop eating sugar. What happens? (Dr. Berg)

What happens if we stop eating sugar for two weeks?
(Dr. Eric Berg DC) Oct. 16, 2022. What benefits could we experience if we gave up sugar for just two weeks? Find out!

Watch video on saturated fat: ▶️ youtu.be/v8R0vInlGgk
Let's talk about what would happen if you gave up sugar for just two weeks. 1. Changes in your face and midsection. Your face would become slimmer, and you would lose weight in your midsection because your liver is releasing fat.

2. Improvements in your eyes, brain, arteries, and kidneys. You'll experience a lot of benefits and potential improvements in these four areas of the body when you cut out sugar.

3. Decreased urination at night. You'll get up less at night to urinate because water follows sugar. Consuming sugar triggers urination, especially at night.

4. More energy: Your body is forced to run on fat fuel instead of sugar fuel. Your body has more calories from stored fat to use as fuel, giving you more energy.

5. Cravings between meals go away: Your cravings and appetite will go away between meals because even though you're not eating, your body is satisfied by your own fat.

6. Less stiffness, pain, and inflammation: These issues can start to improve when you stop consuming sugar, and you may notice less of a need for certain medications.

7. Weight loss: You're going to lose water weight as well as actual fat. Many different health benefits also come with losing weight.

8. Better skin: You may notice improvements in your skin because of a drop in inflammation.

9. Improves insulin resistance Insulin resistance is at the heart of many health conditions. But when you give up sugar, you can start to improve insulin resistance.

Breatharianism: "Light" documentary (video)

LightDocumentary.com; Eliza Darcey, Dhr. Seven (eds.), Wisdom Quarterly

Light: a free food source humans can consume
Can we live without eating any food or taking any drink? Yes. But, but, but...

Whatever we may want to say about it or however much doubt we bring to the topic, some people are already living without food and drink.

The Bodhisatta (Buddha-to-be) almost did it once with the help of devas, who wanted to pour deva food into his pores. But he did not want to mislead people who widely knew that he was fasting and/or living on very little food.

There are documented cases of people who are alive today without taking in calories or liquids, just breath (prana, chi, qi, kyi, spiritus).

It is possible to live on sunlight like plants and to produce sustenance in the form of the nectar of the devas, amrita, from under the tongue with yogic exercises and pranayama or "breath control." More

Anyone inspired by "In the Beginning There Was Light” and its message or by the articles on breatharianism (subsisting by "eating" only breath) on the lightdocumentary.com site may share information with the community via website, blog, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram...

"10 YEARS OF RESEARCH AND 5 YEARS OF FILMING"

Director P.A. Straubinger did ten years of research on the controversial topic of inediam a.k.a. "breatharianism." He writes in his extensive director's statement about the scientific and philosophical background of "Light," its message, possible misunderstandings, and unpublished research material.

As I write this statement in the background section I will allow myself to answer the tagline of my film right away because it creates so much misunderstanding. This is a "spoiler." So if you have not seen the film and want to be surprised, please STOP reading! More

Why we die of sugar and disease (video)

() Isolated sugar (fructose separated from its natural components) is a toxin. The American Heart Association now recommends that we keep added sugars to less than 5% of our calorie intake. That's about 25 grams or 6 teaspoons per day for an average-sized adult.

Diabetes (pancreas)
This statistic is staggering, especially when we realize that there was practically no diabetes prior to 1940!

May 27, 2006: Study finds that a third of American adults have diabetes, and many do not know it. (Reference: June 2006 issue of Diabetes Care).

“Our results underscore the importance of tight glucose [sugar] control in limiting beta-cell destruction…” Glucose [sugar from carbohydrates] causes diabetes. (Reference: Diabetes 2001; 50 1683-1690).

Symptoms of Diabetes

Type I (often come on suddenly and severely)

-Exceptional thirst
-Dry mouth
-Need to urinate often
-Weight loss (though you’re hungry and eating)
-Weakness and tiredness
-Blurry vision

Type II (sometimes do not occur or come on gradually)

-Blurry vision
-Cuts or sores that are slow to heal
-Itchy skin, yeast infections
-Increased thirst
-Dry mouth
-Need to urinate often
-Leg pain

Low-Carbs and Diabetes
1999: Diet of 50% fat [half fat], 30% protein, and 20% [low] carbohydrates improves weight loss and blood lipid profiles in Type II diabetics. (Reference: abstract of presentation before 1999 meeting of Endocrine Society by James Hayes, MD, endocrinologist.

Why Do We Die?

Two-thirds (66%) of people die from just two conditions that involve fatty degeneration.

  • Cardiovascular disease - 43.8%
  • Cancer - 22.4%

95% of Americans are deficient in essential fatty acids (EFAs). (Reference: Fats That Heal, Fats That Kill (2nd edition), Udo Erasmus, Alive Books, Burnaby, BC, Canada, 1993.

How Disease Works
One way disease works is that the body can produce its own "cleansing" agents (such as bacteria, viruses, fungi, and prions) when the need arises. These agents may also be transmitted from others or, as in the case of Mad Cow Disease, by humans ingesting prions by eating the flesh of infected animals.

When these agents start cleaning out the toxins in the body, the toxins are dumped into the bloodstream to be filtered and eliminated from the body. These toxins then cause symptoms doctors diagnose as "disease." Diseases are usually named according to symptoms.

The medical and pharmaceutical establishments then try to produce an enzyme disrupter (allopathic drug) to STOP the cleansing process. This is not done to cure but in order to stop the patient's uncomfortable symptoms.

The drug NEVER "cures" the disease. It just stops the cleansing process so the patient's body remains sick and filled with the toxins, even though the patient may feel somewhat better -- at least for a time. (Reference: Dr. Joseph Mercola, 2003. mercola.com).

"Medicine is far from having decreased human sufferings as much as it endeavors to make us believe. Indeed, the number of infectious diseases has greatly diminished. But we still must die in a much larger proportion from degenerative diseases," Dr. Alexis Carrel, "Man, the Unknown."

Why are we obese? It's not overeating!

Wisdom Quarterly (reconstructed and reposted after Blogspot meltdown)
"Big Fat Happy Buddha" is not a buddha at all. He is Hotei, a Japanese Zen "Santa Claus" (amuletjewel.com).

He sits at the doorway of almost every Chinese restaurant in America. Fat Buddha, Fat Happy Buddha, or Laughing Buddha is known as Hotei in Japan and Pu-Tai in China. He's good luck, representing the ideals of health, wealth, happiness, prosperity, and longevity. He demonstrates the Buddhist notions of the good life attainable in this world.

Laughing Buddha is modeled on a real historical figure: There was once an obese wandering Zen Buddhist monk. His big white belly was often uncovered as he wandered about carrying a sack of candy, which he was known to hand out to children on the street.

Some said he was an incarnation of Maitreya Buddha, which would make him a bodhisattva (a buddha-to-be) not a buddha. For centuries, Buddhist notions of happiness have been based on self-mastery, a happy demeanor, purposeful endeavor, a deep commitment to the welfare of others, and enlightened awareness.

As a result, today his durable hemp sack is interpreted as filled with gold, happiness, health, and other aspects of abundance. It almost makes obesity alluring. Of course, it's just figurative. Santa's jolly disposition is well loved but terrible for the Claus family.

The Inanity of [saying it's] Overeating
Gary Taubes' new book is called Why Do We Get Fat: What To Do About It. The book concentrates more on the why because once we understand why we get fat, the what to do about it part is pretty obvious.

The problem is that the conventional wisdom on why we get fat is almost incomprehensibly naïve and wrong-headed. It's bad science about obesity and weight regulation.

His goals in writing the book, as explained in the author’s letter, are to push the issue on the nonsensical notion that we get fat because of overeating and sedentary behavior.

He distills and extends some of the arguments from his previous book, Good Calories, Bad Calories, into a book that can easily be read on an airplane on any flight covering more than one time zone.

In his blog he asks questions and provides answers. Over the past decade, he has read more than a century’s worth of literature on obesity and nutrition and chronic disease. And it has consistently amazed him that researchers, learned commentators, un-learned commentators, physicians, and public health authorities accept some of the common but misguided ideas about important these subjects.

Many seem to give no conscious thought whatsoever or fail to ask the kinds of questions that a reasonable junior high school student might ask if given the opportunity.

So what does he mean overeating is a nonsensical explanation for why we get fat? Reading Jonah Lehrer’s latest column in the Wall Street Journal “The Real Culprit in Overeating”... More

  • REVIEW: Taubes' book is an eye-opening, myth-shattering examination of what makes us fat, from an acclaimed science writer. His previous New York Times' bestseller argued that our diet’s overemphasis on certain kinds of carbohydrates -- not fats, and not simply excess calories -- has led directly to the obesity epidemic we face today. Michael Pollan heralded it as “a vitally important book, destined to change the way we think about food.” More

Fasting: Eat Less, Remember More

"Less food, more thought," long a sta-ple of Buddhist meditators, Himalayan yogis, and other religious seekers, fasting is gaining credibility due to modern research. The more weight lost, the more memory improved. A preliminary study suggests that restricting calories (or regular, vigorous exercise -- such as yoga -- for those who are already at a healthy weight) is proven to improve memory.
