Worst Coachella; Warped Tour returns

This gent being deceased, it's hard to see how DJ Prodigy will pull this off

The goal of Coachella (coachella.com) is, of course, to make money. Forget art, new bands, tent raves, heat, the endless walking, dust, crowds, or tracker wristbands. This is about seeing and being seen. Too bad there are next to no bands worth seeing this year. Maybe Travis Scott will cause another satanic stampede riot by bringing Drake on stage as a surprise guest and reliving a previous disaster. Maybe Gaga will bore the crowd until football games break out in the audience so she can superheroine around on wires over the stage in a spacesuit. Green *yawn* Day, oy vey. What's the point. Maybe they can perform that Seinfeld song, a real arena anthem. Post Malone could invite skinny Jelly Roll to outshine him. Many already bought tickets, thinking it's usually a good show. For them there's:
  • The Prodigy
  • Gustavo Dudamel & LA Phil
  • KNEECAP
  • SAINt JHN
  • Circle Jerks
  • The Misfits
  • Clairo
  • Charli XCX
  • Megan Thee Stallion
  • GloRilla
  • The Go-Go's
  • Amyl and the Sniffers
  • Ty Dolla $ign
  • Infected Mushroom
  • The Beaches
  • Don't buy, WIN tickets to Coachella 2025 and if you don't win, maybe that's a sign not to go in accordance with the Law of Attraction (just sayin')
On the bright side, WARPED TOUR returns!

Warped Tour (VansWarpedTour, com) used to be the sort of alt skateboard (X Games) corporate endorsement traveling punk rock jamboree festival every summer. It dried up but has now been resuscitated. There's been a big announcement on the pages of USA Today: Vans Warped Tour reveals first few bands for 2025 comeback following long hiatus
Pennywise singer, featured on The Other F Word, sings "Alien"
Dance Hall Crashers take time machine to the nineties for ska, dancehall?
The Beaches "Blame Brett" (Blame My Ex)

Will Anthony Byrd (Tony Hawk) be there? He's injured so probably not, but other trucks will be whipping around on the asphalt.

The #1 party school in the USA is UC...

Should we study tonight? - Why?! There's a great party we can go to instead! Woo!!!

Benny "Stud" Hill approaches a couple of birds
on the beach but is startled by clicking camera.
Why do we need to party? We do not. But college kids, that's a different story. "There's a time and a place for everything," and that place is college. Campus life is built around it. It's practically what the U.S. university system is all about -- socialization and normalization of heavy drinking to get by, to socialize, to speak up, to let loose and drop the stifling inhibitions beaten into us.

Lost Connections (Johann Hari)
Whatever the case, party status is a big consideration for most college students selecting a college, though most will just follow someone to the other person's choice of school, so terrified are we to be alone or set off on an uncharted course. This party obsession has terrible side-effects, but they seem par for the course. Welcome to adulthood. Welcome to the workplace on the first day of your life sentence.

Why do we crave "partying"? It is the only relief we have ever known to the disease of craving (tanha). It is at best a temporary fix that too often slides into habituation, obsession, and even addiction. This "partying" may be defined as self-soothing through one or all of the senses:
  • tongue and tastes,
  • eye and pleasing sights,
  • body and pleasurable sensations,
  • nose and scents,
  • ear and engaging sounds,
  • mind and fantasies.
It seems to mean getting high and tight, but it is more than drunkenness, prescription pill popping, smoking, and dabbling in fentanyl laced street drugs. Sex is partying. Dancing is partying. Getting out of our heads surrounded by fellow distraction-mates, aka fast "friends," is partying. Sunday night rolls around, Monday looms, what to do? Climb on and off the carousel?

"If you are depressed, you are living in the past. If you are anxious, you are living in the future. If you are a PEACE, you are living in the present"

Which University of California campus is it?

The fictional lives of coeds (HBO)
Southern California - This California university, home of many Nobel laureates, tops the 2025 party school list. Is it Chico State? It's always Chico State. No. San Diego? It must be San Diego! No. Spartan Trojans of USC? Bubbly Bruins of UCLA? Shroomin saps of Santa Cruz? Are they dropping acid at UC Berkeley? Meth at Stanford?

(LA Times) A California university that’s home to Nobel laureates has also gained the distinction of being the top party school in the United States, according to a recent Niche ranking.

UC Santa Barbara [home of incels and that shooter] takes the top spot on a list of party schools in the U.S. for 2025, released by Niche, an education research and ranking site.
  • Expect applications to skyrocket as the top 10% of California students eligible to access the UC system -- by their hard work, historical exclusion, natural academic or sports talents, or willingness to do endless homework and participate in boring school activities -- being sick and tired of living like goody-two-shoes, finally have a chance to break free and underage-drink to excess to deal with social awkwardness, clinical anxiety, and trying to finally be part of the app-based campus hookup culture they've heard so much about.
White privilege is off the charts as is our fragility
To calculate the rankings, Niche — which uses a database of nearly 500,000 student college reviews — factored in:
  • student surveys on the party scene,
  • access to bars,
  • athletics grade,
  • Greek (sorority/fraternity) life grade, and
  • access to restaurants.
Yes, we always wanted to learn to party!
Reviews from current and former students [confessing about their and their peers' drug use] describe the university as “combining academic rigor with a laid-back coastal lifestyle” and praised the “vibrant student community.”

More than half a dozen Nobel Prize winners in economics, physics, and chemistry — including David Card, Alan J. Heeger, Herbert Kroemer, and Shuji Nakamura — have taught at UC Santa Barbara over the years.

“I used to be an over-the-top party guy but living in Santa Barbara/Isla Vista helped me form new healthy outdoor habits while learning out how to be more responsible,” one student wrote.

We'll worry about consequences later. Party time!
“There are so many activities you can partake in around town and on campus that is not partying... It is literally heaven on earth for an 18–21-year-old as long as you don’t overdo it.”

But one person, who described him/herself as the parent of an alum, rated the university only two stars, complaining that students “party all day.”
  • Declining or advancing? In 2015 The Princeton Review ranked it third on its list of top party schools
Spring Break Rager
“College kids party, but UCSB is out of control,” the person wrote. One of the best-known party events is “Deltopia,” an unsanctioned spring break party that unfolds in April.

The party, made popular among UC Santa Barbara students who live in Isla Vista near the campus, was paused during the COVID-19 pandemic but resumed in 2022, resulting in multiple arrests and citations during the weekend-long event.

In 2014, more than 20,000 people were estimated to have attended Deltopia, which devolved into a riot resulting in dozens of injuries and more than 100 arrests.

Cruise ships ply coast of the three Californias
The UC Santa Barbara student association at the time issued a statement saying that “The ‘wild party’ stereotype and image exists because we, the students, allow it to exist.”

Brittny Mejia poses for a portrait
This year and last year, Santa Barbara County officials closed the beaches in Isla Vista in anticipation of Deltopia. Last year more than 150 people were issued citations, while 23 people were arrested. More

Trump owes $455M, Santos sues JK (comedy)

We prefer our news fed to us by comedians and commentators (who sometimes even dare to question the mainstream media narrative, though largely the late night guys toe the party line to a shocking degree, whereas Jimmy Dore is more interested in truth than what the networks enforce on their shows).

(Jimmy Kimmel Live) Feb. 20, 2024: Jimmy found out he's being sued by former Republican Congressman George Santos for fraud after we ordered some of his Cameo videos, DJ Trump was ordered to pay $355 million dollars by a judge in New York (plus another $100 million in backdated interest), supporters have started GoFundMe pages to help the ex-ConMan-in-Chief pay the penalty off, Donny made an appearance at Sneaker Con in Philadelphia to sell “the Never Surrender High-Top Sneaker,” and all of the American presidents were ranked by political science experts and presidential historians, who listed Trump as the very worst in U.S. history.

Top 10 worst neighborhoods in L.A. (video)

World According to Briggs, Nov. 20, 2017; Pat Macpherson, Pfc. Sandoval, Wisdom Quarterly

I can live in LA, but it's not whi...
"Welcome to California...Now go home" the funny bumper sticker reads. How funny is it? It is the sentiment of most residents in this place. We love tourist dollars and oddball visitors.

The City of Lost Angels is not all it's cracked up to be. There is no "Hollywood," just a [insert Trumpism] where mythical Hollywood used to be.

There are rich parts of L.A. They're exclusive. That means you can't go there. Oh, sure you can -- if you want to be pulled over, ticketed, towed, or given trouble.

Then there are the gated communities, which are police states there to keep you out and the rich in. But "rich" is relative. NIMBYism is rampant. Briggs recommends the travel book Blue Highways.

Heavy Metal Buddhism?

Wisdom Quarterly
Buddhist/comedian Jim Carrey loved Cannibal Corpse so much that he asked them to perform their megahit "Hammer Smashed Face" in Ace Ventura: Pet Detective.

My girlfriend and I were miserable in samsara. She was at the University of Hawaii and more miserable than I, asking: "When will the suffering end?" "We'll go East in search of enlightenment," I would answer. "You better finish school first and body surf more. Or we can go to a concert?"

In the meantime, we soothed ourselves with the idea of starting a wholesome grindcore band. I look Tibetan (like Gomo Tulku), and she is Scandinavian (like Alissa White-Gluz), and we were vegans. (I still am).

With our crazy mops, we were either going to be called Zen Zero or Decorticated Disenchanted Strands (DDS), because we wanted to cut our long sun kissed hair down to the skin with revulsion or grow very long yogi dreadlocks like the guys in Carcass (see below).

What I had in mind for Zen Zero/DDS (The Agonist)

Devi and dragon (angel and titan), we would jointly sing the lyrics she wrote in a special notebook in class along the lines of Carcass (classic British vegan grindcore) coroner jargon, girl bands, Cannibal Corpse (a comedic, carnivorous American band made famous by their appearance in Ace Ventura: Pet Detective), Cradle of Filth (dark British death metal), Dimmu Borgir (reptilian Norwegian black metal and our first concert experience), Deicide (darker American metal), Kittie, Dead Kennedys (San Francisco punk rock), and smaller wannabee bands of ALL kinds in Los Angeles.

If Carcass and other vegans could sing that meat eating is as gross as cannibalism with no one noticing, surely we could certainly extol the Dharma without anyone caring. And we'd feel good about it.

There's a way to rage at the universe with themes of disgust, dukkha, mindfulness of death, craving for liberation from samsara, and corporeality in general. Dress Goth, date around, and have music soothe the savage breast.

Sometimes renunciation grows to a fever pitch and becomes aversion (dosa) wanting nothing more than magical powers (abhinna) and enlightening everyone that things are empty and repulsive.

Female death metal singing lessons (Angela Gossow)

Carcass taught us that things "reek of putrefaction" in a "jigsaw quandary," and it seemed so Buddhist/tantric/yogic to cover their song "Carneous Cacoffiny." That's a song from their hyperintelligent album/medical tome "Necroticism: Descanting the Insalubrious." We had a really good sense of humor back then. I guess I was a bad influence on her. But she won complete freedom, so it all worked out. And they were her lyrics after all.

CARCASS: Sometimes it's fun to scream Zen-style.

Carneous Cacoffiny

Carcass
...Striking up my discordant underture
A carnal cacophony perversely penned
Transposed...and decomposed...

But don't hold your breath
As you wait for your god or the void
Or the abyss of nothingness

Your usefulness isn't through
Your productivity I resume...

My sordid, soiled handicrafts
Will be your afterlife's handicap....

My corrupt crescendos...
Will leave you out on a limbo...
Your disposition I unleash...
You will rest in my piece...

With deadly dynamics
You're dead, buried, and barred
Your remains dampened and fingered
Your mortal coil is barbed

The death-bells are peeling
Ringing out as you flake
Shrieking out their recitals
A celebration of your wake...

Enter my funereality
My world two meters under
A curious habitat
Your muddy trench I plunder
Pass on to ethereality

Churned out under the sextant's blade
You live your life in wretchedness
And death is no escape
And death is no escape
And death is no escape

The Zen of Screaming (Melissa Cross)

A None-more-metal Dharma-Burger
TheWorstHorse
The latest entry from the ever-expanding realm of metal/Buddhism crossovers is the cover and title of the new EP by the great doom/drone band, Queen Elephantine:

The Tibetan-thangka-style art is one thing, but it doesn’t really get more metal than “Garland of Skulls,” does it?* (Queen Elphantine has dabbled in imagery from world religions and cultures, what with album titles like Surya and Kailash, and song titles like “Search for the Deathless State.” And you can download their record, Yatra (as in the Hindu term for “pilgrimage”) for free here.)

Hear the slow, dirgy, powerful track, “Potency,” from Garland of Skulls, here.

(See here for another recent — and recommended — Buddhism/metal crossover.)

  • *Note: I have dibs on the band name SkülCüp.

For a while now I’ve wondered about the band Yob. (Their name refers to a classic Warner Brothers cartoon; I distinctly remember being a teenager in bands and seeing the cartoon and thinking, Good band name.)...

The last words in the shorter version of the sutra are “Gaté Gaté Paragaté Parasamgaté Bodhi Svaha!” The basic translation, as I understand it, is “gone (or ferried) with everyone to the other shore right now!”

A little more Googling about Yob and Buddhism turns up a quick reference in a Rebel Extravaganza interview with vocalist and guitarist Mike Scheidt, in which he responds to the interviewer’s question about the use of the word bardo in the song “Ball of Molten Lead” from 2004’s The Illusion of Motion LP:

I’m surprised that one jumped out at you, man! A bardo is a term used in Buddhism. A bardo is a segment of life. The Tibetan Book Of The Dead goes into it, the bardos of life… the stages of life and death. More in depth, when you get into the places where the book deals with learning how to die. We go through time periods of trying to understand and remember who we are outside of this life.

And the band has a track called “Asleep in Samsara” on 2002’s “Elaborations of Carbon.” Is all this a coincidence? And more important: does it matter?

I’m not saying that Scheidt is a Buddhist or that YOB is in some way a “Buddhist band.” (And either way, they get points for clearly not trying to cash in on Buddhism’s cultural cachet. They’re hardly hitting us over the head with the references here.) They probably wouldn’t want to be identified as a Buddhist band, even if they were. And I’m not saying they are. All I am saying is this:

1) Metal can be a lot smarter than some would ever think.
2) Buddhism can be way more metal-confluent than some would ever think. (It can also be way more punk- or hip-hop- or baseball- or business- or whatever-confluent than some would ever think, too.)
3) It’s refreshing... More

Via NPR: “Gomo Tulku, the Rapping Lama”

Now, comments on the piece, so far, don’t seem to be in the Rapping Lama’s favor. But listen and see what you think.

Of course, there’s nothing new about the Buddhism/hip-hop crossover. And like anything, the results have been all over the map. Find some gems — and otherwise — in the Horse’s archives...

How Much It Pays to Keep Us Sick

According to the U.S. government's newly released Occupational Employment and Wage Estimates, based on 2008 data, the typical surgeon makes an average of $206,770 a year.

That puts surgeons above anesthesiologists to have the best-paying job in the country.

Internists now earn a little more than prosthodontists (people who make and fit false teeth). Otherwise, the top 10 jobs rank the same as a year ago. The biggest change is... More>>
