"A smart, endlessly interesting exercise in connecting cultural dots to learn how we got here." — Kirkus Reviews, starred review
From the New York Times best-selling author of Jesus and John Wayne, a revelatory history of white Christian womanhood in the United States.
In her “paradigm-influencing” (Christianity Today) bestseller Jesus and John Wayne, which has changed how countless Americans understand their [Christian] faith, historian Kristin Kobes Du Mez showed how evangelicals made Jesus into an idol of rugged masculinity and Christian nationalism. Now she uncovers the roots of today’s glittering, Instagram-ready culture of white Christian femininity.
Live Laugh Love explores a world intimately familiar to millions of American women: Christian bookstores and radio, Hallmark movies, multilevel marketing companies, and contemporary lifestyle brands.
This consumer culture may seem trivial, but Du Mez demonstrates that it has an unlikely and revealing history that stretches all the way back to the late nineteenth century and the emergence of New Thought, a movement that championed the power of the mind to shape reality.
Du Mez shows how this idea drew together disparate traditions, including Mormonism, holiness evangelicalism, and holiness theology’s charismatic offshoots. Usually seen as distinct, these creeds in fact overlapped, and in the process gave rise to prosperity theologies and to the gospel of positive thinking.
But positivity had a dark side. Du Mez introduces us to religious innovators who taught that positive thinking was the secret to spiritual and material success, and reveals how these notions gave rise to a new feminine ideal.
As women read prairie fiction; bought and sold Tupperware containers and Mary Kay makeup; shopped at Hobby Lobby, Target, and Altar’d State; and decorated homes with shiplap, they moved freely between the religious and the secular.
Marketed as empowering, these products were part of a consumer culture that elevated domesticity and vulnerability while exposing women to systems susceptible to manipulation.
Combining sweeping cultural history with intimate storytelling, Du Mez explains how theological exclusion led women to build their own brand of Christianity, rich in cultural influence if thin in formal doctrine.
Ultimately, Live Laugh Love explains how a powerful yet elusive vision of womanhood has shaped lives, families, and politics for more than a century now—and how it has brought us to our reactionary moment. More

At dollypartonsamerica.com, thanks to Jad Abumrad of Radio Lab, there is a 9-part series of interviews on America's favorite bra owner, The Dali Parton, Goddess of Kindness, a kind of cultural iconand bodhisattva (a "being destined for enlightenment/awakening" by the marriage of compassion and wisdom) for the benefit of us all. Feminist, activist, Buddhist Rebecca Solnit says it quite well:
(Real Crime Archives) White father, a convicted rapist whose own father was a Nazi who fought for Hitler and was an alcoholic who abandoned his family, trapped his daughter in the basement for 24 years. He blamed cult for her disappearance, while leading a "normal" life above ground with his wife and family, as he began having 7 children with his daughter through incestuous rape, all to keep her under his patriarchal paternal power, he explains.
He says from prison that he is not the only man in Europe doing this. Look around.
The Joe Fritzl case emerged in 2008 when a 73-year-old man name Joe Fritzl named his daughter Elisabeth Fritzl (born 6 April 1966) as the mother of his daughter. Surely, sir, you mean your granddaughter? No, no, I know what I mean.
Joe informed investigators in the city of Amstetten, Lower Austria (Germany's neighboring country, where Adolf Hitler was born), that the mother was a runaway belonging to a cult. When she appeared at the hospital to explain her daughter's illness (never having seen sunshine), she explained that she had been held captive for 24 years by her own child molester, serial rapist father, Josef Fritzl (born 9 April 1935).
Joe Fritzl had sexually and physically assaulted, incestuously abused, and repeatedly raped and impregnated his daughter countless times during her 24-year imprisonment inside a small dungeon Joe built, concealing it an area of their suburban house cellar [1, 2].
The incestuous rapes resulted in the birth of seven children [3]. Three children remained in captivity with their mother, one died shortly after birth and was disposed of by cremation by Joe Fritzl [4], and the other three were brought up out of the dungeon to live with the family upstairs by Fritzl and his wife Rosemarie, claiming they were dropped off by their cult-member daughter Elisabeth, who was in fact still imprisoned just below her mother.
Joe Fritzl convinced his wife, her mother, and the authorities that they were foundlings each time, left at the doorstep by a daughter who could not care for them herself.
Fritzl was finally arrested four decades later by Austrian police on various counts of rape, false imprisonment, murder by negligence, and incest, one week after Elisabeth's eldest daughter, Kerstin, fell ill in the cellar and had to be taken to the hospital by Joe Fritzl himself, against his better judgment.
In March 2009, when Elisabeth unexpectedly showed up to court, Joe Fritzl pleaded guilty to all counts and was sentenced to life imprisonment in a special mental facility, at one point having to change his name due to the notoriety of the case. More

Understanding 'masculinism,' a movement to restore the primacy of men
(Fresh Air) June 24, 2026: Terry Gross interviews Helen Lewis. Masculinism is a belief that feminism emasculates men [making them less masculine], and men should be in control while women stay at home [barefoot and pregnant or] raising children. In his ideal system, “we would do it in our politics the same way we do it in our church structure,” he told me recently. “And that is, we vote by household.”
Wilson is a co-founder of the Communion of Reformed Evangelical Churches, based in Moscow, Idaho. Over the past five decades, he has built a small empire there, dedicated to disseminating his theocratic vision for the United States: a publishing house, a school, a liberal-arts college, and a video-streaming service.
His denomination, which has about 170 affiliated churches, counts [macho drunkard] Defense SecretaryPete Hegseth as a member, and Wilson was invited to lead a prayer service at the Pentagon in February. So when the pastor casually suggests disenfranchising half of America, people listen.
When I asked him about this position, Wilson said it wasn’t his top priority—“We have bigger fish to [kill and] fry”—but something he sees happening in perhaps 200 years’ time.
I found this intellectual footsie maddening. “If I said to you, ‘I think all white men should be put in cages—but not now; it’s not my aspiration for now,’” I suggested, “then you wouldn’t be interested in a single other thing that I had to say at that point.”
Wilson chuckled. “Oh, I know you’d probably have all my attention.”
