AHA! California really was an island
First, Americans should know that there are today three Californias: upper (Alta California, USA), lower (Baja California, Mexico), and BC Sur (Southern tip, Mexico).
All three were part of Mexico for the longest time, but the British, Spanish, German, and other European settler colonialists now calling themselves the "Americans" decided to annex Alta California for their new settler colonial project.
We wouldn't be the only island, as Madagascar is to Africa, and we still have other islands.
This came amid their ongoing genocide of the indigenous folk living there, the Native or American Indians, following centuries of Spanish colonialism, which was aided and abetted by the Vatican (the Catholic Church and its maniacal "Doctrine of Discovery") and the Spanish throne. Could it be that it was once an island?
Yes. Here's why. If one travels up the Gulf of California in Mexico to San Felipe, one can easily imagine continuing all the way up to the Salton Sea (near Los Angeles), USA. That lowland desert is full of the remains of higher sea levels of the ancient past.
![]() |
| Connect green parts, with Gulf lower right |
Now it's a well-watered deserted and the nation's breadbasket, fondly called California's Central Valley.
Cartographers knew California was a lake and depicted as such in many maps. That was the legend, the lore, and the reality for European explorers and travelers. Even today we have a phantom lake (Lake Manly) in one of the lowest and hottest places on earth -- Death Valley, Alta California.
The "Island of California" (Spanish Isla de California)
There was a long-held global (mis)conception, dating from the 16th century, that the California region was not part of mainland North America (of which Mexico is a part)
Rather, it was known to be a large island separated from the continent by a strait now known to be the Gulf of California (part of the Pacific Ocean and not part of the Gulf of Mexico on the Atlantic side).
One of the most famous cartographic "errors" in history, it was propagated on many maps during the 17th and 18th centuries, despite contradictory evidence from various explorers [1].
The legend was initially infused with the idea that California was a terrestrial paradise, like the Garden of Eden or Atlantis.
This mapping error -- which may not have been an error at all -- was not a one-off event. From the mid-1500s to the late 1700s [2] great controversy surrounded the geography of California.
For instance, a Spanish map from 1548 depicts California as a peninsula [3], while a 1622 Dutch map depicts California as an island.
A 1626 Portuguese map depicts the land as a peninsula, while a 1630 British map depicts it as an island [4].
A French map from 1682 only shows the tip of the Baja Peninsula.
There are slightly over 1,000 maps in Stanford's Glen McLaughlin Collection of California as an island, the largest collection of such maps in the world [5].
History
![]() |
| Why would anyone think this island was an island? |
The first known mention of the legend of the "Island of California" was in the 1510 romance novel Las sergas de Esplandián by Garci Rodríguez de Montalvo—the sequel to Montalvo's more famous tales of Amadís de Gaula, father of Esplandian. He describes the island in this passage:
"Know, that on the right hand of the Indies there is an island called California very close to the side of the Terrestrial Paradise; and it is peopled by black women, without any man among them, for they live in the manner of Amazons [6]."
It is thought that, because of the widespread popularity of Las sergas de Esplandián at the time of European exploration of California, that it is reasonable that the book inspired the naming of California [7].
The book's description is also thought to have prompted early explorers to misidentify the Baja California peninsula as the island in these legends [7]. More: Island of California (Wikipedia)

Is it wrong to hate Genocide-Kamala?
MSNBC's Joy Reid tries to blame WHITE WOMEN for right-leaning lawyer and cackling politician Kamala Harris losing. VP Harris is not to blame. It has to be somebody else's fault, anybody else. If she had any cahones she, as vice president, would fail to certify Trump's election just like Trump pressured VP Pence to do to keep her and Genocide Joe out of office. That seems fair, and who would blame her?
It wasn't even close. The whole country hates Kamala and never liked her, never felt connected, never felt heard for issues ordinary people cared about. The CIA promised the job to KD Harris and her Jewish husband Doug (and potential First Daughter Droopy Emhoff) and burned her.

Pres: What do women, Blacks, Latins want?
(ScaredKetchup) Unmarried cat lady Taylor Swift parody: N-Barbie just dropped a Trump diss track
(The Daily Show) Kamala [who arrived late, forcing a shorter interview that she nevertheless attempted to filibuster and railroad through without answering any question but only belaboring points and changing the subject to something more comfortable and less confrontational] takes on Fox News [kind and reasonable] Host Bret Baier, and Trump rambles in Univision Town Hall [to pander to the Latin demographic he desperately needs to win over to win the election].
Oct. 17, 2024: #DailyShow #DesiLydic #KamalaHarris Desi Lydic tackles how Kamala Harris and Donald Trump fared when they exited their media comfort zones this week, with testy Harris facing an assertive Bret Baier of Fox News, and Trump getting way too many words in during a failed Univision town hall also organized by Fox.
Grace Kuhlenschmidt reports on the candidates entering the "lion's den" from...an actual lion's den. Trump is grilled by surprisingly direct and to the point Latino voters, brags about his “fertile mind,” and lawyers try to pay off pornstar Stormy Daniels AGAIN [whom Trump still claims to have never met in spite of being photographed with her].
(Jimmy Kimmel Live) Oct 17, 2024: The country is 18 days away from the presidential election and the usual horse race is said to be very close (like it is said to be every four year, neck and neck so that there's just no predicting what could happen), according to the New York Times the Trump election campaign has sent more than 7,400 emails asking for money since Nov. of 2022 (more than 10 a day every day for two years), most of them looking for cash but sometimes they try to sweeten the pot with exciting albeit FAKE offers like the Ultra MAGA Membership or meeting Don Junior, Trump has been doing cozy chats with wannabe "Bro Rogans" of the podcasting world, he took his talents to South Beach for a Univision Town Hall where he was grilled on important issues, over the summer Trump’s lawyers tried to make a second hush money payment to keep Stormy Daniels quiet about her affair with Trump, and it's time again for This Week in Unnecessary Censorship. #Kimmel

[Evasive] SS Director Cheatle grilled by lawmakers on Trump assassination attempt
The full disgraceful perjured testimony
Director Cheatle is clearly aware that there's a conspiracy and she cannot throw the FBI under the bus for their participation in this attempted assassination. She is probably wisely, sagaciously evading and lying to save her own life. While she may be killed anyway, she would almost certainly be killed almost immediately (as a staged suicide) if she said what she already knew. If viewers of investigative videos with only a casual interest in the topic of a failed shooting of an unpopular politician can know volumes more than Cheatle is claiming to know, that is just not credible. By saying she is waiting to say until she is sure is the political thing to do. It is career suicide, but it is likely extending her life. Cheatle, welcome to the Machine. Survive this, and there's a promotion in it for you. Crack and speak your mind and you're through. What a country.

Cavemen got high on shamanic plants?
Ryan Hogg (rhogg@insider.com) Business Insider via MSN, 4/2023; Eds., Wisdom Quarterly
.
Ancient humans were getting high on hallucinogenic drugs during cave rituals 3,000 years ago: study
- Scientists have discovered the use of hallucinogenic [shamanic, entheogenic, mind-manifesting psychedelic] drugs by humans 3,000 years ago.
- They believe shamans used natural plant substances as part of rituals held at the Es Càrritx cave in Menorca.
- Previous evidence of ancient entheogen use had been indirect and largely based on depictions in amazing art, both on cave walls and artifacts.

| The evidence: ancient hair samples |
The cave was first occupied around 3,600 years ago and was used as a funeral space until around 2,800 years ago, the researchers said.
The study, published the journal Scientific Reports, found psychoactive substances atropine, scopolamine, and ephedrine on hair strands, which had been dyed red.

- [NOTE: To label something a "hallucination" for falling outside the range of ordinary consensus reality is wrong. It is not unreal or a delusion simply because others have not yet seen it and agreed that it is so. There is objective reality, but very few are aware of it. We merely know our subjective reality, our perceptions and interpretations. This may be expanded and contracted by our thinking, cultural training, and the company we keep. What someone in a visionary state sees is not unreal, less real, or a hallucination because we, outside of that state, do not have the compacity to confirm or deny it. If we expand our awareness, we may indeed see the exact same thing. And if two or more see something, we agree that that is a consensus and therefore part of reality. For example, during a near-death experience, many individuals report seeing the same thing. That suggests they are seeing something real that most of us have not yet accessed and confirmed but which await us should be come close to death. Moreover, there is a phenomenon as yet unexplained by science wherein a group of people have a "shared death experience." This refers to people not near death experiencing what the person near-death is seeing. They do not speak of it as it is happening, yet they recount the same experience? It is not a mass psychosis or hallucination if they are seeing the exact same thing at the exact same time. But people not privy to the experience will have to call it a "hallucination" to preserve their perceived grip on this consensus reality we mostly share other than individual variations in perception and interpretation.]

| We were communing with nature in the cave. |
The scientists believe the substances, likely derived from various plants [natural entheogenic substances containing DMT], were used as part of rituals held at the cave.
These may have involved shamans [intermediaries] "who were capable of controlling the side-effects of the plant drugs," according to the study.
The strands of hair had been placed in wooden and horn containers decorated with concentric circles.
"The concentric circles on the wooden containers may have depicted eyes and could have been a metaphor for inner vision related to a drug-induced altered state of consciousness," according the press release.
- [This would coincide with the modern-day art of visionary Alex Grey, who better than anyone currently alive seems to capture the essence of entheogenic experiences using DMT, or the "spirit molecule," and/or the opening of the third eye (Buddhist dibba-cakkhu, Hindu yogic agni chakra).]

| There were eight Neanderthal groups (MSN) |
"As preserved human hair is rare in archaeological contexts, this was an unusual opportunity to detect levels of drugs in biological samples," Prof. Elisa Guerra-Doce, an associate professor of prehistory at the University of Valladolid, told Motherboard.
Previous evidence of drug [medicinal plant] use by ancient humans had been indirect and largely based on depictions in art. More
