Sweeney slams ‘fake’ female empowerment

🎵Anything you can do, I can do better because I can do🎵

These clothes feel so restrictive!
Hollywood star Sydney Sweeney has called out at what she calls “fake” pronouncements on female empowerment in the entertainment industry.

Sweeney made the comments in an interview with Vanity Fair published Wednesday, responding to widely reported comments made by Hollywood producer Carol Baum earlier this year, who said Sweeney is “not pretty” and “can’t act.”

At the time, Sweeney’s team released a statement calling the comments “shameful.”

Do you think it has anything to do with us being white or just hot?
.
I should learn how to act, right?
Now, the actress and producer has fired back herself and linked the disparaging remarks to what she says is a wider problem in the industry.

“It’s very disheartening to see women tear other women down, especially when women who are successful in other avenues of their industry see younger talent working really hard — hoping to achieve whatever dreams that they may have — and then trying to bash and discredit any work that they’ve done,” Sweeney said.

Award shows are never wracking.
“This entire industry, all people say is ‘women empowering other women.’ None of it’s happening. All of it is fake and a front for all the other sh*t that they say behind everyone’s back.”

“I mean, there’s so many studies and different opinions on the reasoning behind it,” she continued.

“I’ve read that our entire lives. We were raised — and it’s a generational problem — to believe only one woman can be at the top. There’s one woman who can get the man. There’s one woman who can be, I don’t know, anything,” said Sweeney.

Sweeney, whose roles in “Euphoria” and “The White Lotus” earned her two Emmy nominations, is currently working on a biopic about famed boxer Christy Martin... More

Seven things I hate about being hot

Katty Purry: I'm the hottest, sexiest, most charming popstar there will ever be!
I'll let my body do my talking for me, and I don't need to claim anything (Emy/unsplash.com).

Old, rich, and hot? It's a dream come true
(Christine Stevens) I know, it sounds pretty lame, this title. But just today someone wrote an article:

“Hot people complain about the ‘horrible experience’ of being good-looking” is the title of this article written by Alex Mitchell, who is a guy -- not exactly a hot guy either. I don’t mean to be judgy, but go ahead, look him up.

He probably really hates hot women because they have failed to respond to his particular brand of erudition, working for this great newspaper called The New York Post. Yeah, it’s pro-Trump.

That was his subtitle, not mine: “What a pity to be pretty.”

And even though he called his article “Hot people,” the entirety of the article focuses on, surprise-surprise, hot women.

Did the Buddha by any chance teach people how to become more beautiful? - Yes. Karma.
Yesterday's "hot" is "meh" today, and they don't even have that! It's gone, so it's on to the next...
.
Yoga is the way to health and hotness
He doesn’t get into how hard it is to be a hot guy — because maybe it’s not that hard. I don’t know.

So here are the things Alex Mitchell, dripping with resentment, writes about “pitiful” hot women and their travails:

— People assume they are dumb because they are hot.

Shush. Maybe it's all in the eye of the beholder.
— Married women think hot women are after their husbands. (Really? I had no idea that was a thing -- mate poaching?) More:

The science of breast size (Mythbusters)

They've done nothing for me. I mean, not that I know of.
I'm not going to buy more fruit just because she's pretty and in a skimpy top though, you know, I may make conversation and, come to think of it, I do need more oranges.

Reverse true for males: flatter=better?
Let's get one thing straight. Breast size doesn't matter at all, not a bit. They affect nothing, certainly not attention, stares, tips, comments, date requests, marriage proposals, catcalls, jeers, backaches, or popularity. There is no Boobie Industrial Complex (fashions, bikinis, braziers, stuffing, silicone cups, tape, wires, pulleys, wonder pills, creams, exercises, surgical augmentations, lingerie sales, saline implants, Erin Brockovich rentals...) supporting them. It's only a myth! Discovery's Mythbusters conducted a scientific test.

Bigger tips breasts equal bigger tips?
Yet again, science confirms that life imitates art just as consumers imitate mainstream media.
I'm not jealous or envious. I'm just curious. How can she stand being such an attention whooer?
.
SCIENCE: busting the myth of bust size

(MythBustersDiscovery) Kari Byron and crew put the "bigger boobs better tips" hypothesis through a rigorous scientific social science experimentation with silicone mammalian augmentations that will ascertain the consumer capitalist engagement of a subset of the population of restaurant diners where tipping is obligatory. The conclusion has a twist that may come as a surprise to viewers. Who's actually doing the covert leering and paying for the privilege?

This anecdotal test attempts to see how long viewers will watch without understanding a word of what's going on simply because the fruit-buying influencer hired a bouncy sidekick to play along.

Why do only 2% of people have green eyes?

The green eyes of Afghanistan were made famous by Afghan Girl Sharbat Gula
Green eyed Pashtun girl from Afghanistan, the Buddha's birthplace (ancient Gandhara)

What's the origin and reason for green eyes?

  • 0:00 Green Eyes
  • 1:11 The Green-Eyed People of China
  • 1:43 Genetics and Origins of Green Eyes
  • 6:22 Reason for Green Eyes
How to get green eyes greener: Makeup?
When and where did green eyes first develop and for what reason? Now green eyes are the rarest eye color, with only 2% of the entire world’s population having them.

As a general breakdown of eye color worldwide: Brown eyes: 70 to 80% Blue eyes: 8 to 10% Hazel eyes: 5% Amber eyes: 5% Gray eyes: 3% Green eyes: 2%.

People of European descent represent the largest share of those with green eyes -- but green eyes are not exclusive to them [seeming to originate in ET races and arising in hybrid human races] -- and they are most common in northern, western, and central Europe, more specifically, Ireland, Scotland, and other parts of northern Europe have the highest share of people with green eyes.
She was an innocent Afghan girl, 1984
Iceland is one, with around 8–10% of men and 18–21% of women having them, and in the Netherlands, 6% of men and 17% of women have green eyes.

In Europe more broadly, they're found in around 8 percent of the population. Among European Americans, green eyes are most common among those of Celtic and Germanic ancestry, at about 16%.

Even though they’re most common in Europe, people with green eyes can be found all over the world, even as far as remote parts of China. Liqian, a remote village in Western China, is known for its high percentage of people with green eyes and blond hair.
Yuezhi descended people, Liqian, China (theapricity.com)
One myth suggests they’re descended from Roman soldiers who got lost in China, but this is unproven. DNA results from 2010 that analyzed these villagers did indicate that they are almost two thirds of Caucasian origin [ignoring a potential ET connection], potentially lending support to this mundane Roman theory, but it’s still debated.
  • How to classify Yuezhi descended people of Liqian village, China? Are they "white" if they look it? Liqian is a small region in Gansu province in China where many locals have striking European features. Some locals have been told that they are descendants of a "lost Roman legion." They have tried to build a tourist industry around their looks, but their genetics more strongly supports ancestry from Scythians, Tocharians, or other Steppe Indo-European groups. They also have very hawk-like aquiline noses (theapricity.com).
Cause
Now what causes green eyes? Initially, scientists used to believe that eye color in general was decided by two genes — one from each parent. Now they know as many as 16 genes influence the amount of melanin produced by the iris, with the OCA2 and HERC2 genes heavily involved in eye color.

Melanin absorbs light, so irises with high amounts of melanin appear darker. These genes however interact in complex ways, and science is still trying to fully work out how this all works.

Stress ruins: Man on right is Sharbat Gula now.

How to wow HS reunion: hire double (video)

VICE, Life Hacks with Oobah Butler, S1 E5, 11/9/20; Family Guy; Eds., Wisdom Quarterly

Sending an attractive lookalike to my high school reunion

(VICE) Like many (most) of us, Stephen didn’t have a good time in high school. He played saxophone in the school band, was a loser, got bullied, and struggled a little (a lot).

Can we get these two to play us as a couple?
Having graduated ten years ago, he hasn’t seen any of his former classmates since. So why not dupe them into thinking he "made it"?

Now his high school reunion is coming up and he wants to settle some scores. So he enlisted the help of VICE's Oobah Butler via his app, Oobah.

In the wake of sending doubles of himself to collect awards and be interviewed by media outlets around the world, Oobah auditioned lookalikes and sent a hotter, more successful but fake version of Stephen to attend his high school reunion to reinvent his image in front of his old classmates. But can he get away with it?

On Friendship, Feelings, FanGirls, Fitting In

Kate Kennedy, (312) 379-9676 (amazon.com, Jan. 23, 2024); Ananda (Dharma Buddhist Meditation), Jen Bradford, CC Liu (eds.), Wisdom Quarterly

One in a Millennial (Kennrdy)
One in a Millennial: On Friendship, Feelings, Fangirls, and Fitting In
came out in January of 2024, written by Kate Kennedy. It has 4.5 out of 5 stars with only 38 ratings. But it's an Editors' Pick Best Biographies & Memoirs.

From yet another pop culture podcaster and a voice of a generation, it's a celebration of the millennial zeitgeist.

One In a Millennial is an exploration of pop culture, nostalgia, and the life lessons learned (for better or worse) from coming of age as a member of a much-maligned generation.

Kennedy is a commentator and host of the popular podcast Be There in Five, which focuses on millennial issues.

Part-funny, part-serious, Kennedy navigates the complicated nature of celebrating and criticizing the culture that shaped her as a young woman, while arguing that great depths can come from surface-level interests. [In other words, being shallow isn't all bad.]

With trademark style and vulnerability, One In a Millennial is sharp, hilarious, and heartwarming all at once.

She tackles AOL Instant Messenger, purity culture, American Girl Dolls, going out tops, Spice Girl feminism, her feelings about millennial motherhood, and more.

Kennedy’s laugh-out-loud asides and keen observations will have browsers and readers nodding heads and maybe even tearing up [the text]. More

The Buddha on friendship

I'll be your friend. - Really? - No, I'm busy.
Not that a Kennedy isn't a great source of information on friendship, it's just that the ancient historical Buddha had a few things to say on that subject.

Noble friendship
The most famous thing he said about metta (Sanskrit maitri, "friendliness" or "loving kindness") was said in regard to noble friendship, or thinking kind and friendly thoughts toward noble ones. Who are the noble ones? They are those on the stages of enlightenment (bodhi, awakening).

They are guides and resources for us on the Path to the ultimate end of suffering that is called nirvana, complete liberation from all kinds of rebirth and suffering.

One day his famous and beloved attendant, Ananda, had an idea from things he had observed in the Monastic Community (Sangha). He saw how some enlightened persons were very friendly to others, and those others in turn advanced very quickly to the goal of liberation.

So, thinking he had a clever observation to make, he approached the Buddha and respectfully said: "It seems to me that noble friendship is half the spiritual life!"

The Buddha condemned this, saying: "Do not say so, Ananda, do not say so. Noble friendship is 100 percent of the spiritual life." Far from actually condemning what great Ananda had said, the Buddha asked him to intensify it, to proclaim just how valuable noble friendship is.

He goes on to explain WHY it's so valuable and important on the road to enlightenment. Because of friendliness, respect, and wise association, we approach enlightened people. And on account of approaching we give ear and hear the Dharma (the Buddha's Teaching of the Path to enlightenment).

We bear it in mind, practice it, see it modelled for us. And of all our noble friends in the world, the Buddha is the greatest noble friend (kalyana mitta). Why?

It is because he set rolling the Teaching, made known the Path, articulated the Dharma for everyone since then to practice and reach the goal. In that sense, he our best friend even if he is not here to thank. However, he did say there was a way to thank him, to honor him in the highest way. Worship? Sacrfice? Donations? No, no, and no.

He said he is paid the highest honor when someone puts into PRACTICE this Teaching he strived for so many years (45) and so many lifetimes (countless) to uncover and bring forth into the world again as "supremely-enlightened" or samma-sam-buddhas do.

What about normal friendship?
Did the Buddha have anything to say about regular things (you know, ordinary friendship, feelings, fangirls, and fitting in)? Yes!

In one long sutra (DN 31), a discourse called the "Advice to Householders" (Sigalovada Sutta), the Buddha talks about two kinds of "friends," the good friend and the bad friend.
  • He talks about making money, getting rich, having a family, a good marriage, a well-organized house, fun, entertainment, and all sorts of things few would guess he knew anything about.
We all love the "bad friend," who is willing to do all sorts of bad things with us -- gambling, getting drunk/high, whoring around, going out to concerts and endless entertainments, and all sorts of legal troubles. How do we recognize people like this? There's a hidden danger to such people -- all they borrow and take, the crud they talk about us behind our backs, the trouble they get us in, the way the encourage our worst traits.

He talks about the "good friend," who protect us, help us, speak well of us, introduce us to and encourage good and useful things, accompany us in good stuff...the sort of people we usually take for granted, quiet and humble, having our backs when we need help or to borrow something. They're not like those two-faced jerks abusing the term "friend."
  • In fact, some people might say the Buddha had more to teach ordinary worldly people (householders who just want money, love, a house, a relationship, kids, and all that weight) than he did the people with spiritual aspirations.
It's as if people think spiritual types (holy rollers) should just all ordain and become monastics, hermits, wandering ascetics, and spiritual nomads.

They can. But no one needs to do that. Every and anyone can practice right where one is. Just determine a goal: a better human rebirth, rebirth in one of the many heavens, the end of all rebirths, full enlightenment here and now in this very life... the first stage of enlightenment ("stream entry") with at most only seven (7) more lives to go....

Once that goal is determined, the rest is easy. There's a teaching for that in the Buddha's Dharma. What a friend the Buddha was to all living beings.

The Buddha holds up a flower (Zen)

Roshi Bodhin Kjolhede | Zen Bow | Spring 2019, Vol. XLI, No. 1 via Rochester Zen Center (RZC.org); Seth Auberon, CC Liu, Dhr. Seven (eds.), Wisdom Quarterly

Philip Kapleau Roshi (hvzc.org)
ROSHI PHILIP KAPLEAU HAS SAID that when he was at Hosshin-ji, the monastery where he spent his first three years of training in Japan, at the end of each sesshin Harada Roshi would publicly recognize, in the zendo, the participants who had achieved kensho that week. It was done as a brief ritual, but imagine what it put people through: Besides inviting feelings of envy on the part of the “losers,” the ritual might well have been hard on the “winners,” too; in Japan, you never want to stand out from the group. So why did Harada Roshi do this?

Two reasons come to mind. First, by publicly presenting those who had just seen into their nature, he hoped to boost others’ faith that they, too, could break through. Second, now that those who had glimpsed their True Self were “outed,” they would feel a greater responsibility to live up to that Self in their daily lives. However well these strategies may have worked at Hosshin-ji, for an American Sangha I would expect them to do more harm than good. They would too likely reinforce the delusion that there is something to be “attained” in Zen. On the contrary, if awakening gives us anything, it’s the realization that from the very beginning all beings are endowed with the same originally enlightened nature....

THE BUDDHA HOLDS UP A FLOWER
Koan commentary
Art in the Rochester Zen Center (rzc.org)
How can we convey the teaching beyond words and letters…in words? Once, when the World-Honored One (the Buddha) in ancient times was upon Vulture's Peak (named such because of the shape of the rocks), he held up a flower before the assembly of monastics.

At this all were silent. Venerable Great Kashyapa (Maha Kassapa) alone broke into a smile. The World-Honored One said, “I have the all-pervading Eye of the True Dharma, the Secret Heart of Incomparable Nirvana, the True Aspect of Formless Form. It does not rely on letters and is transmitted outside the sutras. I now hand it on to Maha Kashyapa.”

The Commentary
You don't get it like I do (Demystifying Reality).
Golden-faced Kudon is certainly outrageous. He turns the noble into the lowly and sells dog flesh advertised as sheep’s head — though with some genius. However, supposing that at the time all the monastics had smiled, how would the “All-including Eye of the True Dharma” have been handed on?

Or again, if Kashyapa had not smiled, how could he have been entrusted with it? If you say that the True Dharma can be handed on, the golden-faced old man with his loud voice deceived the simple villagers. If you say it can’t be transmitted, why did the Buddha say he had handed it on to Kashyapa?

The Verse
Holding up a flower
The snake shows its tail.
Kashyapa smiles,
And people and devas are confounded.

THIS CASE IS BASED ON A FAMOUS STORY. Some have called it a fable and said it never really happened, but it doesn’t matter in terms of its value as a koan (a public case). Whether it has historical veracity or not is not important; it’s a rich koan.

About Maha Kashyapa: “Kashyapa” is the short form of Mahakashyapa. The prefix “Maha” means “great” or “large,” and here it is an honorific. With this incident of him on Vulture's Peak smiling in response to the Buddha holding up a flower, he became the first patriarch of Zen.

For the scant biographical information available on Mahakashyapa, let’s turn to The Transmission of Light (Denkoroku in Japanese), a collection of koans compiled by the Japanese Zen Master Keizan, the Dharma Heir of Dogen.

This text purports to be Zen’s ancestral line, presented in stories — enlightenment accounts — of each of the 52 or so earliest masters. It says that Kashyapa was born in an Indian Brahmin family, and his name in Sanskrit means "drinker of light."

When he was born, supposedly a golden light filled the room and went into his mouth; hence the name. We’re also told that his complexion was golden. As a monk he was renowned for his ascetic self-discipline and moral strictness, and these qualities enabled him to assume the leadership of the Sangha after the passing of the Buddha.

It was Kashyapa who convened the First Buddhist Council in order to counteract tendencies toward a less strict lifestyle within the Sangha. He had differences of opinion with Ananda, the Buddha’s attendant, but in the end authorized Ananda as his Dharma Heir in Zen’s ancestral line.

IN THE CHINESE TEMPLES and in [the Rochester Zen Center] Buddha Hall in Rochester, the figure of Mahakashyapa stands on the Buddha’s right and Ananda on the Buddha’s left. Iconographically, Mahakashyapa is often identified by his cracked and wrinkled face, meant to show his age and his asceticism.

When Kashyapa met the Buddha, the latter said, “Welcome, mendicant” [Ehi bhikkhu or "Come, monastic"] — so by that time, apparently, Kashyapa was already wearing the patchwork robe of a monk. [The saying makes someone a monk ordained by the Buddha, so one would not need to be wearing a robe yet.]

The Denkoroku says that “Kashyapa had practiced austerities and never wasted any time.” Remember that the Buddha himself began his journey to enlightenment by first spending six years practicing severe austerities, but then gave them up when he realized they would not lead to enlightenment.

The Buddha then warned that self-punishment [penance, severe asceticism] was not the way, but Kashyapa stuck to his ways, drawing the disapproval of others in the Sangha:

“Only seeing the ugly emaciation of his body and the wretchedness of his clothing, everyone doubted Kashyapa.” Still, we’re told, “every time the Buddha was going to give a talk in someplace or other, he shared his seat with Kashyapa, who thenceforth was the senior member of the community.” More
