Nature's wisdom: "Biggest Little Farm" (film)

The Biggest Little Farm (official trailer)
The Biggest Little Farm follows two American dreamers and their beloved dog when they make a choice that takes them out of their tiny Los Angeles apartment.

They move to the countryside to build one of the most diverse farms of its kind in complete co-existence with nature.

The film chronicles their near decade-long attempt to create the utopia they seek, planting 10,000 orchard trees, hundreds of crops, and bringing in animals of every kind -- including an unforgettable pig named Emma and her best friend, the rooster named Greasy.

When the farm’s ecosystem finally begins to reawaken, their plan to create perfect harmony takes a series of wild turns.

To survive they realize they'll have to reach a far greater understanding of the intricacies and wisdom of nature and of life itself.

Racist Japan? Japanese against Japanese

Evan Hadfield (Rare Earth, Aug. 15, 2017); CC Liu, Ashley Wells (eds.), Wisdom Quarterly

How to destroy people: Make them "untouchable"
Hey, f*ck, this happened to me in the USA!
Japan's Burakumin ("village people") are a people within a people. For hundreds of years they experienced direct persecution that has kept them from being fully functional members of society.

Even though they were released from their low caste in the 1800's, the stigma attached to them remains to this day.

The one thing this look is missing that the maker wishes he'd added, is the historic discrimination against Koreans and how it is interwoven into the village folk (and modern-day Yakuza). It is worth looking into for anyone itching to learn and understand more.

From bird to BEES: "Honeyland" (doc)

NEON, June 2019; Ashley Wells, CC Liu, Crystal Q. (eds.), Wisdom Quarterly

Honeyland [official trailer] – in theaters July 26, 2019
All-natural beekeeper Hatidze lives with her ailing mother in the mountains of Macedonia (Eastern Europe, above Greece), making a living cultivating honey using ancient beekeeping traditions.

When an unruly family moves in next door, what at first seems like a balm for Hatidze's solitude becomes a source of tension as they, too, want to practice beekeeping but keep disregarding her sage advice.

This is the most-awarded film at this year's Sundance Film Festival, winning the "World Cinema Grand Jury Prize," a "Special Jury Award for Cinematography," and another "Special Jury Award for Originality."

Honeyland is an epic, a visually stunning portrait of the delicate balance between nature and humanity that has something sweet for everyone.

One sip of Diet Soda on the Brain (video)

Are diet sodas toxic for us? Are they at least healthier than white-sugar sodas? These are some of the questions many have on their minds. Today, let's look into the science of diet sodas. Is it the cure for the common cola or another guilty poison in the service of dieting and restrictions? Let's find out.

Eggs communicate from inside shell (video)

Daily Mail Science Correspondent Colin Fernandez (The Daily Mail, July 22, 2019); VeganKit.com; ScienceAlert.com; Ashley Wells, CC Liu, Crystal Quintero (eds.), Wisdom Quarterly

Bird eggs vibrate to communicate with each other to warn of imminent attack to their nest, scientific study finds.
Rather than sitting blissfully unaware of the world outside, gull eggs -- or rather the living embryos inside of them -- have a "sophisticated" awareness of what goes on around them, the study found.

The research found that yellow-legged gull eggs, which are found around the UK's coastline, can pick up on warning squawks from adult birds.

The eggs -- having heard [or otherwise sensed] the warning -- will then delay hatching because the coast is not clear [insofar as potential danger exists]. More

COMMENTARY: When does life begin?

Life in the womb (Genetic Literacy Project)
The same happens to us. Human embryos in our mother's womb are aware of the world for nine months before we are officially "born." But life actually begins at conception. So in Buddhist Asia, people are born 1-year-old because of the ten lunar months they spent swimming in the womb on earth are counted as being here and being far more aware than we ever thought. This is unlike the Judeo-Christian West where our age is counted from our birth date. So we in the West are "younger," but we don't look it when we see race groups side-by-side in the same society. "Asian don't raisin" and "black don't crack," it is said. Caucasian skin needs all the antioxidant help it can get, even if that is the self-deceptive youthful number we label ourselves with. But egg science shows the baby inside is alive. This has karmic implications for egg eating and abortions. Think what are doing before you act. Life is precious, and not just our lives but the lives of living beings who make it to the womb.

Hong Kong protests against China (video)

HK police ban upcoming weekend protest
Chinese spying being brought to US
(CNA, July 25, 2019) A potential showdown looms over Hong Kong City, a semi-autonomous part of China or the Chinese Police State. Police in riot gear have denied permission for a protest in Yuen Long District on July 27, citing public safety concerns. The rare protest ban comes amid fears of growing violence in the city. Netizens are now calling on more people to join the demonstration. Rally organizers have appealed the police decision but said regardless of the outcome, their march will proceed as planned. [Now, gangs of paid thugs are joining the  row by attacking demonstrators.]
Why are they demonstrating?
(Vox) The people of Hong Kong City are protesting in record-breaking numbers. Hundreds of thousands of Hongkongers have taken to the streets to protest a controversial extradition bill that could send Hong Kong residents to mainland [police state] China to be tried in court.

HK’s Chief Executive Carrie Lam says the bill is meant to prevent Hong Kong from becoming a safe haven for fugitives. But its opponents fear that Hong Kong would be exposed to China’s flawed judicial system, which would lead to further erasure of the city’s judicial independence.

At first Lam was determined to move forward with the bill. But after a series of massive protests, she announced she would “indefinitely suspend” the bill. However, protesters aren't accepting the suspension.

They have started demanding its complete withdrawal. They've also begun calling for Lam’s resignation.

But this rise in tensions is about a lot more than a bill. To understand why this bill hits a nerve with Hongkongers, it’s important to understand Hong Kong’s relationship with China -- and exactly how the bill would tip the scales in China’s favor. More

Alan Watts on the illusory EGO (video)

Alan Watts via WDYD; Ven. Nyanatiloka; Dhr. Seven (ed.), Ashley Wells, Wisdom Quarterly

EGOLESSNESS (anattā, literally "not-self") is the third of the Three Characteristics of Existence (ti-lakkhana).

The anatta (non-ego, selfless, impersonal) doctrine teaches that neither within body and mind phenomena of existence -- usually referred to as name and form -- nor outside them can there be found anything that in the ultimate sense could be regarded as an independently-existing real self, soul, ego-entity, essence, or any other abiding substance.

This is the central doctrine of Buddhism, and without knowledge of it a real understanding of Buddhism is altogether impossible.

It is the only really specific Buddhist doctrine with which the entire structure of the Buddhist teaching stands or falls. All remaining Buddhist doctrines may, more or less, be found in other philosophical systems or religions.

But the anattā-doctrine has been clearly and unreservedly taught ONLY by the Buddha. Therefore, the Buddha is known as the anattā-vādi or "Teacher of Not-Self" or "Teacher of the Impersonal Nature of all Things."

Whoever has not penetrated the impersonal nature of all existence (of the Five Aggregates Clung to as Self) does not comprehend that, in reality, there exists only this continually consuming PROCESS of arising, turning, and passing bodily and mental phenomena and that there is no separate, independent ego-entity inside or outside this empty process.

Such an individual, conventionally speaking, will be unable to understand Buddhism -- that is, the teaching of the Four Noble Truths (sacca) in the correct light.

Instead, that person will think that it is one's self (soul, ego, personality) that experiences suffering, that performs karma (skillful and unskillful actions), and that will be reborn according to this karma (action), that will enter into nirvana, and that walks the Noble Eightfold Path. More

Living in an Off-the-Grid Log Cabin (video)

Off-the-Grid Log Cabin: Alone with My Dog in an Ice Storm
(LOG CABIN BUILD, S2 • E2) #logcabin #offgrid #dog
Relaxing at the cabin with Cali, my golden retrieve, the weather was incredible, warm and sunny, one day with deer coming out to dine on the acorns exposed under the melting snow.

But the next day, raining ice pellets fell all night long before changing to snow. It was not the worst ice storm I've witnessed, not like the ice storm of several years ago that shut the Northeast down for a few days, but it did some damage.

With our drone, my wife got some incredible aerial footage and photographs of raging rivers, pristine Canadian wilderness in the snow, and the log cabin.

The rustic tiny house is extremely cozy right now, especially when my wife and dog are here and the fire in the woodstove is burning, the candles and lanterns lit, and furs piled high on the bed. It's extremely cozy now that the floor is insulated and the spaces between the logs have been filled in. Woodworking and bushcrafting the structure was very rewarding, but the interior finishes are the icing on the cake.

Whenever I'm inside with the fire burning and I look out through the windows at the winter storms raging, I'm inspired to finish this tiny log house as soon as possible so that I can get working on the front porch, the outdoor kitchen, the cellar, workshop, maple syrup shack, and more.

I'm particularly excited to live off the land, foraging for wild plants and edibles, growing my own vegetables, and becoming self-reliant. I can use this off-grid-cabin as a shelter and base where I can practice living off the land and use primitive technology, honing bushcraft skills, improving my survival skills and my self-reliance.

Of course, no video would be complete without the meals I prepare on the woodstove over the fire with cast iron cookware. In this episode, I make slaughtered animal spiced with garam masala, leeks, onions, and broccoli. For breakfast, I have fresh poultry fetuses from the nearby rural homestead where they raise birds for slaughter. I'll be showing how I put the fetuses in long-term storage, preserving the food for the future.

My dog and I fall asleep to the hooting of barred owls. The wind through the trees and the falling rain were big ASMR triggers for me. It's deep winter outside, but in the cabin it's cozy and warm. Sometimes I think living off grid in a tiny house seems much easier than the suburbs away from the daily stress of life.

In fact, dealing with my high blood pressure and becoming much healthier by eating more vegetables is my motivation for building this cabin and living the simple life out in nature. Not my only motivation, of course, I'm also inspired by my wife and my parents, who are living long and happy lives cutting out meat.

Inspiration is important in this crazy world, and of course I'm not the only one who wants to escape from society and retreat to a cabin in the woods.

To accomplish my goal of living off grid with as little money as possible, living cheaply and saving money wherever possible, I need to continue to improve my woodworking and bushcraft skills, along with tree identification, foraging, making maple syrup, harvesting chaga mushrooms, catching water, preserving beans for long-term storage (dehydrating, salting, curing, smoking, freezing, drying).

Why subscribe even if I'm not actually going to do all of these things I promise myself I'm going to do?

Maitreya the Future Buddha (sutra)

ExoticIndiaArt.com; sutra (DN 26); Amber Larson and Dhr. Seven (eds.), Wisdom Quarterly
Tibetan thangka painting of Maitreya Buddha as "deity" (exoticindiaart.com)
.
Maitreya thangka with brocade (Exotic India Art)
Maitreya (from maitri or "friend," embodiment of "loving-kindness"), the "kindly one," is a bodhisattva ("being striving for enlightenment") according to the sutras or a buddha (supremely enlightened one) according to the tantras.

When he is represented as a buddha, he is shown seated. But the legs, instead of being crossed, are pendent.

He is the only "divinity" (deva) in the Himalayan Buddhist pantheon represented seated in European fashion.

He has the signs of a buddha such as long earlobes, urna (auspicious bump with curled hair between eyebrows), and the ushnisha (cranial bump on the crown of his head, symbolizing wisdom), and he wears the robes of a wandering ascetic.

Maitreya, also known as "the Future Buddha," is now thought to be living on the Tushita plane waiting for the right time to come down to earth. Tushita is one of the celestial deva worlds above Mount Sumeru and is considered the special field of future buddhas.

Tibetans believe that if someone makes statues and thangka paintings of Maitreya Buddha and chants the mantra "The Promise of Maitreya Buddha," that person will be reborn in Tushita after death.

Shown with an extremely sweet and gentle countenance, he holds in his left hand, between thumb and forefinger, the stem of a lotus flower. The bloom of this lotus supports a wheel. This is the Buddhist wheel of spiritual instruction (eight spokes of the Noble Eightfold Path).

His right hand is held in the varada-mudra (Tibetan mchog sbyin gyi phyag rgya) of generosity or boon granting, with the palm facing downwards and the fingers extended.

Surmounting his image is a royal parasol (Tibetan gdugs, suggestive of a vimana-UFO), the traditional symbol of both protection and royalty. More

Another Buddha -- Maitreya (Pali "Metteyya") -- will gain enlightenment, his monastic community (Sangha) numbering in the thousands.

The greatest king of the time, King Sankha, will go forth into the left-home life of a wandering ascetic and attain full enlightenment as a disciple under Metteyya's guidance.

The story, after chronicling the ups and downs of human wealth, life span, and so on concludes with the following lesson on karma and skillful action:

"...Meditators, live with yourself as your island (lamp), yourself as your refuge (safe resort), with nothing else as your refuge. Live with the Dharma as your island, the Dharma as your refuge, with nothing else as your refuge.
  • [Note 1: May also be translated as: "Live with phenomena (dharmas) as your island, phenomena as your refuge, with nothing else as your refuge," where the only real "refuge" (sarana) is nirvana. Other things called "refuge," namely the Three "Refuges" are actually mistranslated and are actually "guides." See Henry Steel Olcott for correct etymology.]
"And how does a meditator [do so]? In one instance a meditator remains focused on the body in and of itself-- ardent, alert, and mindful -- setting aside craving and grief for the world.

"One remains focused on feelings (sensations) in and of themselves... mind in and of itself... mental formations in and of themselves -- ardent, alert, and mindful -- setting aside greed and grief for the world.

"This is how one lives with oneself as an island, as a refuge, with nothing else as a refuge, with the Dharma as an island, the Dharma as refuge, with nothing else as a refuge...." More

Living TREE bridges and Yetis (video)

Bing, 6/27/19; Ashley Wells, Seth Auberon, Dhr. Seven (eds.), Wisdom Quarterly, Wiki edit

The roots of invention
Monsoons make this the wettest.
Welcome to the wettest place on Earth. "Living root bridges" can be found in the tropical rainforests of Meghalaya state, northeastern India, among the wettest places on Earth.

The gentle waterways that flow through the region’s valleys become gushing torrents during the summer monsoon season and would wash away traditional bamboo bridges.

So generations of indigenous Khasi people have devised a way of building root bridges by shaping living trees, like one near the village of Mawsynram.

It works like this: Rubber fig trees are planted or located on opposite riverbanks. As the trees' above-ground roots grow, the Khasi guide them across the water, sometimes with the support of temporary scaffolding like bamboo.

Limestone cave expedition, Jainta Hills
After years of tending, the roots eventually join and take hold of each other, forming a living suspension bridge that provides safe passage over swollen rivers. The innovation has proved critical to the Khasi people.

In this environment, bridges made of harvested materials would quickly rot and fall apart, leaving villages cut off and isolated. Building a living root bridge requires patience, however.

It takes about 15 to 30 years to grow a bridge sturdy enough to support humans. But the investment pays off. As these bridges age, they get stronger. Some are 100 feet long and can hold over 50 people.

Giant "wild men" of the world

Yeti (Mande Barung) of India
Of course they exist and gov'ts know. Ask Lloyd Pye.
In the U.S. knows them as Bigfoot, in Canada as Sasquatch, in China as Yeren, in Russia, Georgia, Turkey, Bulgaria, the Chechnia, and the Caucasus as Almas or "Wild Man," in Brazil as Mapinguary, in Sumatra as Orang Pendek, in Australia as Yowie, in Vietnam and Borneo as Batatut, Indonesia as Sajarang Gigi, in Bangladesh as Ban-Manush, in India as Mande Burung and, most famously of all, in Nepal, Bhutan, and Tibet as Yeti or "Abominable Snowmen."

The little-known Indian version of this legendary ape-like creature is called mande barung -- or "forest man" -- and is reputed to live in the remote west Garo Hills of the north-eastern state of Meghalaya, India.

I was invited by passionate Yeti-believer Dipu Marak to travel throughout the area to hear for myself what he says is compelling evidence of the existence of a black and grey ape-like animal which stands about nearly 10 feet (3m) tall.
The Mande Burung is a cryptozoological ape-like creature that inhabits the Meghalaya subtropical forests in the remote Garo Hills of the Northeast India. In July of 2019 I was invited by passionate yeti believer Dipu Marak to travel throughout the area of the Garo Hills, Meghalaya, in search of India's Yeti.
No proof allowed not even hair DNA
(Indpendent.co.uk) [In 2008] a group of amateur "Yeti-hunters" from Meghalaya gave two hairs they say they discovered in a "nest" of the Mande Burung to a renowned British primatologist. Having examined the hairs, Ian Redmond said they were like that of no other creature known to live in these jungles. Even more teasingly, Dr. Redmond said that under the microscope the hairs most closely resembled those of a human, a chimp, a gorilla, or the purported "Yeti hairs" brought back by the late Sir Edmund Hilary's 1953 Mt. Everest expedition. More

Child molester Epstein found hurt in cell

MiamiHerald.com, 7/25/19; Pfc. Sandoval, Seth Auberon, Crystal Q. (eds.), Wisdom Quarterly

Jeffrey Epstein, the Palm Beach [b]illionaire who was arrested earlier this month on child sex-trafficking charges, was found injured in his New York jail cell today, News 4 New York reported.

The station said Epstein, 66, was found in the fetal position and had marks on his neck, citing sources close to the investigation. The station said it may have been a possible suicide attempt [or hoax-injury], quoting sources.

Last Thursday, Senior U.S. District Judge Richard M. Berman in NY ordered the accused serial sexual predator to remain incarcerated at the Manhattan Correctional Center. Berman, who listened to testimony from two women who said they had been abused [raped, molested, exploited] by Epstein as teenagers, said Epstein was a danger to young girls. More

COMMENTARY
Trump was there, Bill Clinton, Dershowitz...
If a country or culture -- the US and UK(see following story) -- treats their children like this, it makes for a war-like society.

For example, young boys are regularly sexually abused by men in the Pashtun culture of formerly-Buddhist now Muslim Afghanistan, where a tradition of "boy play" (bacha bazi) exists.

It was illegal under the CIA's Taliban, but American troops are ordered to ignore it as a culturally-sensitive matter, so it goes on.

And it leads to widespread callousness and hypocrisy in that society, as in ours, where norms are enforced that cannot be talked about, believed in, or questioned.

Just as we have PizzaGate -- a scandal that is off-limits, dismissed as a nonexistent and outlandish "conspiracy theory" against Hillary Clinton and top politicians, and covered up -- so, too, in England they have the vile case of the BBC's Jimmy Savile and his legacy of powerful royalty, politicians, and elite rich people in the country molesting and trafficking children.

We allow this to go on even when our own president, Pres. Trump like Pres. Clinton before him, is implicated and involved as partaking of sex with minors on Jeffrey Epstein's Orgy Island after riding the Lolita Express many times.

Now Epstein is hurt in his protected cell? Suicide bid, hoax suicide bid, street justice beating because sex criminals (rapists, etc.) in general and child molesters in particular are hated in prison system? This has the fingerprints of a hoax. Epstein is very rich, and corrupt officials could be helping him.
