Ratak Puntso may seem like any other 2-year-old, but he has always been destined for an exceptional life. Recognized as the prodigious reincarnation (tulku) of the grand master Kalu Rinpoche, Ratak is already inducted as a grand Lama of Tibetan Vajrayana Buddhism. He will spend his childhood without much contact with peers of his age. Instead, he will be surrounded by monks (lamas), tutors, and servants who all take part in passing down Buddhist Teachings as well as protecting the “precious” child. Documentary: The Lama Child. Directed by Jeanne Mascolo and Bruno Vienne. Producers: Mona Lisa Production.
TULKU (official trailer)
(Chewyguru) Tulku? "Divine birth, ordinary life."
This is the official trailer for Tulku, a documentary film directed by Gesar Mukpo.
Tulku is a documentary film written and directed by Gesar Mukpo. It details the personal experiences of five young Western men who were identified in childhood as being tulkus, or "reincarnated Tibetan Vajrayana Buddhist masters."
[Jesus Christ, known as St. Issa in Tibetan Buddhism, may have also been a tulku reborn far to the west of Ladakh and Kashmir, where he returned as a youth to study at Hemis Gompa and remember his divine mission of attempting to save others as a Maitreya or Messiah.]
For over 700 years, tulkus have been sought out as highly revered leaders and teachers of Tibetan Vajrayana Buddhism.
Beginning in the 1970s, several tulkus have been identified as having incarnated in the West. These new, Western-born, very modern tulkus lead lives prone to East-West culture clash and identity confusion.
Background
Gesar Mukpo, who wrote and directed Tulku, was born in 1973, the son of world-renowned Tibetan Buddhist master [scandal ridden sex guru] Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche and his [underage] British wife Diana.
At the age of 3, Mukpo was identified by Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche as the reincarnation of the late Shechen Kongtrul Rinpoche (the Jamgon Kongtrul of Shechen), one of his own father's teachers in Tibet [2, 3].
Three-year-old Gesar Mukpo was then "enthroned" as a tulku in radical Sixties town Berkeley, California, across the Bay from San Francisco. More
(victress108) Produced by Chariot Videos (chariotvideos.com). Blessings tells the story of 3,000 nuns who live in the remote nomadic region of Nangchen in Eastern Tibet. They practice an ancient yogic tradition of Tibetan Buddhism. Despite near extinction during the destruction of the Cultural Revolution, these remarkable practitioners have emerged to rebuild their monasteries by hand...stone by stone. Now, their wisdom tradition is once again vital and growing. In 2005, Tsoknyi Rinpoche III led a small group of western students to meet these amazing women. Narrated by Richard Gere, with music by Ani Choying Drolma and Steve Tibbetts, Blessings is the story of this extraordinary journey.
There are too many names to thank here, but suffice it to say that this film would never have happened without the belief, trust, patience, and extra hours of so many contributors. Thanks, everyone!
It always seemed that it would be nice to live in a country where Hollywood saw fit to do movies on all religions, but seeing what it does to Christianity, it's good that it does not see fit to warp every other religion. Secular Judaism gets the most exposure, but as for historical fantasies, it's all Cecil B. DeMille and Charlton Heston. Religion is the addictive opiate of the masses, so the government and its propaganda arm have to wield it to maintain control, so Christians should beware of what they are being fed. JC Superstar was good, coming from the Jewish perspective, but how much of it was real? John C. Reilly helped almost get a Siddhartha G Superstar play off the ground, possibly turning it into a spec script then a Broadway play and finally a big movie release. Alas, it was not to be because one of the first drafts was pretty darn good and accurate, having played in Westwood next to UCLA years ago in a tiny playhouse. Then in 2003, he played a Buddhist monk in the comedy Anger Management.

How could a German film festival sound good to anyone but old Ashkenaz and Eurotrash hipsters? The highlight of the fest is a Turkish-German film about a woman going between the cultures, and that sounds fascinating. We should all be so elevated in culture. Tonight like last night at the Disney Music Hall in DTLA, Latin Gustavo Dudamel and Company perform the music of Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream (laphil.org).
GERMAN CURRENTS FILM FESTIVAL 2024
Germans get a bad rap due to history.
Film, unlike any other art form, has the power to connect us as human beings.
It allows us to empathize with others and step into their shoes, to travel across borders, and even travel through time. As the new director of the Goethe-Institut in Los Angeles, I [Luisa Rath-John] am proud to present some of the best new German cinema to the audiences of Southern California.
[NOTE: Goethe, a German surname, is not pronounced \go-eth\ as it would be in English but \gurr-tha\ of the \Gurr-tha Institoot\.]
The 18th annual festival takes place from October 11–14 with screenings at the American Cinematheque and the Goethe-Institut.
German Currents 2024 opens
Friday, October 11, 2024
The Egyptian Theatre, Hollywood
It begins with the exclusive red-carpet LA premiere of multi-award-winning writer-director Sonja Heiss’ German box office and festival favorite, WHEN WILL IT BE AGAIN LIKE IT NEVER WAS BEFORE, based on the best-selling novel of the same name by Joachim Meyerhoff and starring Devid Striesow (ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT, THE COUNTERFEITERS, AGE OF CANNIBALS). A gala reception at the Egyptian Theatre will follow the premiere.
The festival weekend continues with the US premiere of the popular short film showcase NEXT GENERATION SHORT TIGER 2024. The US premiere of director Sarah Neumann’s feature-length film debut, BEYOND THE BLUE BORDER, depicts the absurdities of life under East German rule and stars Lena Urzendowsky [FRANKY FIVE STAR, Netflix’s DARK, and HOW TO SELL DRUGS ONLINE (FAST)].
Writer-director Fabian Stumm’s relationship drama, BONES AND NAMES, dives into the Berlin art scene and into the relationship between two creatives. Come and see them at the Goethe-Institut.
At the American Cinematheque’s Los Feliz 3 Theater, German Currents presents the LA premiere of multi-award-winning cinematographer-director Judith Kaufmann and director Georg Maas’ historical drama THE GLORY OF LIFE, capturing the final year and romance in the life of writer Franz Kafka, as well as US premiere of writer-director Aslı Özarslan’s ELBOW, based on the novel Ellbogen by Fatma Aydemir.
Completing the festival program, the annual German Currents children's matinee returns to the Goethe-Institut on Sunday, October 13. It will bring to the audience a free LA Premiere screening of Soleen Yusef’s winner of the German Film Award for best Youth and Children’s Film, WINNERS, that will also be presented as a special invite-only educational screening for LA area schools on Monday, October 14, at the Gardena Cinema.
A discussion with Soleen Yusef is planned following both events.
On behalf of German Currents' partners, supporters, and the GC Team, I look forward to welcoming you all to the festival and to the opportunity to meet and engage with our audience and share the transformative power of cinema.
Best, Luisa Rath-John and the German Currents Team
Hanukkah (Hebrew חֲנֻכָּה , Yiddish חֲנוּכָּה, Chanukah) is a Jewish festival commemorating the rededication of the Second Temple in Jerusalem at the time of the Maccabean Revolt against the Seleucid Empire. It is also known as the Festival of Lights (Hebrew חַג הַאוּרִים, ḥag ha'urim). It is observed for eight nights and days, starting on the 25th day of Kislev according to the Hebrew calendar, oi vey, which may occur at any time from late November to late December in the Gregorian calendar, Dec. 22 (near winter solstice) this year. The festival is observed by lighting the candles of a candelabrum with nine branches, called a menorah (or hanukkiah). It may be stupid, but aren't the roots of most holidays? The tradition has to be simple to remember something very important.More

Bodh Gaya: The Seat of Enlightenment: A Documentary Film on Buddhism and Awakening
Adwhyta proudly presents Bodh Gaya: The Seat of Enlightenment, a short documentary film that explores one of the most sacred Buddhist sites in the world. In the Dhammapada, the Buddha says, “All tremble at violence; all fear death. Putting oneself in the place of another, one should not harm nor cause another to harm.”
This film revolves around the kind of transformation Buddhism can bring in people’s lives and the role it can play in today’s chaotic world. In the journey through the film, we explore the story of the Buddha, the historical significance of pilgrimage, and personal experiences of Buddhist monastics and lay practitioners.

(Netflix) This is the most personal project to date from Academy Award-winning director and writer Alfonso Cuarón (Gravity, Children of Men, Y Tu Mama Tambien). Roma follows "Cleo" (Yalitza Aparicio), a young domestic worker for a family in the middle-class neighborhood of Roma in Mexico City. Delivering an artful love letter to the females who raised him, Cuarón draws on his own childhood to create a vivid and emotional portrait of domestic strife and social hierarchy amidst political turmoil of the 1970s. Now showing in Los Angeles for award contention in select theaters and on Netflix.
(Nuart) This haunting and magical tale, told wordlessly but eloquently, is a simple fable of a man shipwrecked on a tropical island, and his efforts to survive, wrestling with nature. The island is populated by birds and crabs, and is one day visited by a large sea turtle that seems to have mysterious intentions. Filled with convincing details of the natural world and told with imagination and heart, The Red Turtle is a spectacularly beautiful film. Its gorgeous hand-drawn animation equals the best of any previous animation classic. Directed and co-written by Michael Dudok de Wit, Academy Award winner for the animated short “Father and Daughter,” The Red Turtle was created by Europeans and is presented by the Japanese Studio Ghibli, makers of Spirited Away and The Wind Rises. Acclaimed at the Cannes Film Festival, where it won a Special Jury Prize, the film is a unique achievement.
CGI of lunar capsule in earth orbit shows fake curvature of earth (Hidden Figures)
(20th Century Fox) Hidden Figures is based on an incredible true story not previously told. The hit movie stars Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer, Janelle Monáe, and it's in theaters now.
Black U.S. great get little credit.
This is the incredible untold story of Katherine G. Johnson (Taraji P. Henson), Dorothy Vaughan (Octavia Spencer), and Mary Jackson (Janelle Monáe).
These brilliant African-American women work as human "computers" doing math at NASA, serving as the brains behind one of the greatest operations in history: the launch of astronaut John Glenn into orbit.
American segregation, prejudice, racism
This stunning achievement restored the nation’s confidence, turned around the Space Race, and galvanized the world. The visionary trio cross all gender and race lines to inspire generations to dream big.
It's true, maybe the moon landing shown on TV was a big fraud, an obvious hoax, but that is not to say we have never really gone. If even the Nazis had been there, we must have gone, and to do it we needed human "computers." What astronauts found and the true proximity of our Moon, these are different issues to be looked into.

Strap in. "Hardcore Henry" is one of the most unflinchingly original and cinematic wild-rides to hit the big screen in a long time.
SYNOPSIS: You remember nothing. You’ve just been brought back from the dead by your wife (Haley Bennett, "Cora" in that hot "Buddha's Delight" music video). She tells you that your name is Henry. Five minutes later, you are being shot at, your wife has been kidnapped, and you should probably go get her back.
Who’s got her? His name’s Akan (Danila Kozlovsky). He’s a powerful warlord with an army of mercenaries and a plan for world domination. You’re in an unfamiliar city, Moscow, and everyone wants you dead.
Everyone wants you dead except for a mysterious British fellow called Jimmy (Sharlto Copley). He may be on your side, but he may not be. You aren’t sure. If you can survive the insanity and solve the mystery, you might just discover your purpose and the truth behind your identity.
Good luck, Henry. Did we mention that this whole movie is POV (seen from the point of view of your character)? You’re likely going to need some luck.
When I push this remote control button here, that goes boom over there.
Say what? This is some messed up s. Ban it!
In theaters April 8, 2016. But see "Hardcore Henry" first with Wisdom Quartelry in Alhambra, California (and elsewhere) on April 7th at select “Ultimate Fan Experience” shows, which include a limited edition comic book and Q&A with director Ilya Naishuller and star Sharlto Copley. In theaters everywhere Friday, April 8th.
(KinoCheck International) Star Wars: Episode VII: The Force Awakens ALL Trailer, Clips (2015)
Off-Ramp commentator Dale Hoppert sat on Hollywood Blvd. for a week to be first in line for the first-ever screening of the first Star Wars trilogy in 1985.
Now he's ready for "Star Wars: The Force Awakens," opening Thursday, Dec. 17th [at midnight, which is technically the 18th] at a theater near you.
Gather close now, younglings, for here is wisdom.
Soon you will [be driven to] join a war among the stars that has been raging for generations, a war of dark against light, and many of you have never known a galaxy without it.
But some few of us who remain have survived. We recall how it all began: It was a long time ago, in a decade now far away...the 1970s. Before the dark time that was the prequel trilogy...even before "Empire."
Sadly, the murderers are real - modern policing ready to be deployed to serve the state.
Mos Eisley: wretched hive of scum and villainy, explains Obi-Wan Konobi.
(New Rockstars) VIDEOSPOILER ALERT! "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" trailer ANALYZED
Yoga poses or asanas to be one with the Force.
Don't worry. I'm not going to keep that up the whole time. It's just, you see, I've finally figured out my place in the Star Wars universe.
I'm 50 and have been a "Star Wars" fan since I was 12. I now finally know which of those wonderful characters is me and is the perfect metaphor for my journey through the Star Wars universe.
And it's hard not to adopt the appropriate tone and cadence. Just count yourselves lucky I'm not talking like Yoda [who was modeled after the 14th Dalai Lama].
You see, after almost 40 years, I've finally figured out: I'm Obi-Wan Kenobi.
Let me explain. Obi-Wan Kenobi is the old Jedi Knight played in the '70s and the '80s by the late Sir Alec Guinness.
He's the one in the first movie who recognized what was going on and sent Luke off on his quest. In the prequel films, we see a young Obi-Wan played by Ewan McGregor having all the adventures he'll later use as stories to inspire Luke Skywalker.More + AUDIO
