Quantum computer chip breakthrough

Amazon’s quantum breakthrough that everyone missed
(Sabine Hossenfelder) While Microsoft’s Majorana quantum computing chip might have grabbed all the headlines earlier this year, Amazon appears to have quietly made some big progress in the quantum computing race. Their new Ocelot chip uses cat qubits to support a scalable architecture that reduces errors by up to 90%. What does that mean? Let’s take a look.

Deep South deep freeze; forest found

It is snowing in Florida, North America's dangling participle, dripping into Trump's Gulf of Mexico America. This used to be the Deep South. (CBS Miami) A major winter storm is moving into northern Florida on Tuesday, bringing what will potentially be record-breaking snowfall totals.

Scientists baffled after finding fossilized frozen forest under ice patches on Beartooth Plateau
Scientists were recently left stunned when they unveiled the remains of a 6,000-year-old forest on the Beartooth Plateau.

The forest was buried in ice and came to the surface because of warming, Earth.com stated. Researchers believe that the forest retreated under ice 5,500 years ago due to a change in solar radiation and volcanic cooling which followed the phenomenon. Findings regarding the long-buried forest have been published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS).

On examination, the fossils were identified to be the remnants of a mature white bark pine forest. As per experts, the forest was once situated at an elevation of 10,000 feet.

Researchers cited the forest as an example of how ecosystems transform due to alterations in the atmosphere. “This is pretty dramatic evidence of ecosystem change due to temperature warming.

It’s an amazing story of how dynamic these systems are,” said David McWethy, one of the study’s authors and an associate professor at Michigan State University's (MSU’s) Department of Earth Sciences. More

'Crazy to see': Parts of Gulf Coast get first-ever blizzard warning

.
LAFAYETTE, Louisiana (Gulf of Mexico) − Portions of the U.S. Gulf Coast saw a first-ever blizzard warning, a wide swath of the Deep South was targeted by a major winter storm, and brutal cold temperatures gripped much of the nation today (Jan. 21, 2025) as the U.S. grappled with wild winter weather.

Stacey Denson, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Lake Charles, told USA TODAY the blizzard warning was a first for Louisiana. A blizzard warning means frequent wind gusts to 35 MPH and snow reducing visibilities to 1/4 mile or less is expected.

"It was pretty crazy to see," Denson said. "It is actually improving a bit, but we had whiteout conditions." More

I think I'm falling in love, not my partner

Cupid (Kamadeva, Mara Devaputra, Eros) seems so cute and innocent.

I know it's love cause she starts looking like this.
These things indicate a love that is slowly dying. It’s often easy to tell when a relationship is totally falling apart because there will be obvious signs, but it’s less apparent if someone is slowly falling out of love with his or her partner.

Keep an eye out for these 12 behaviors, as they may indicate that your lover’s interest is cooling when you wish that it would burn forever with more and more intensity, like an endless honeymoon. But it burns, dwindles, until is burns out.
I know I'm in love because it's blissful (piti) like serene meditating only not as good.
.
This is how I pictured us. Details schmeetails!
Am I falling in love, how can I know? Maybe this flower can tell me with its petals. They love me, they love me not, they love me, they love me not... Omens. Signs. Who can predict the future? But what if my partner is slowly falling out of love as the old lovespell is coming undone?

1. They’ll have less interest in intimacy and physical affection. That's one sign.

We were like cats in a cradle reaching Purvana.
One surefire way to determine whether someone is quietly falling out of love (even if you're falling more and more in love) is to pay attention to physical intimacy, or rather the lack of it.

Couples tend to grow less passionate after the "honeymoon period" has worn off. That's usual. But if intimacy has disappeared entirely, including hugging or handholding, that’s a big warning sign.
2. They mention feelings of being “trapped.” It's time for A Conscious Rethink. Feeling trapped rarely happens in the context of discussing a relationship, but a partner may drop hints about feeling trapped or caged in various aspects of life.

This may be accompanied by restlessness and frustration, leading to behaviors such as going for long drives or walks “just to get out.”

3. There’s less communication than there used to be. When and if this person does communicate with a partner, rather than avoiding conversation, it seems distant and unresponsive than before.

Maybe it's just to get an answer instead of having a conversation, or it's a grunt, a lackluster response, rather than actually having a discussion about a topic. More: If someone is quietly falling out of love, they'll display these 12 behaviors

Mara appears like an angel of light or monster
(AN 3.56) A rich Brahmin approached the Buddha. Sitting respectfully to one side, he said: “Master Gotama, I have heard that Brahmins of the past who were senior teachers-of-teachers, said:

“‘In the olden days this world was so full of people one would think they were squashed together. Villages, towns, and capital cities were no more than a chicken’s flight apart.’ What is the cause, sir, what is the reason why these days human numbers have dwindled, a decline in population is evident, and whole villages, towns, cities, and countries have disappeared?”

“Brahmin, nowadays humans love only illicit desires. They are overcome with immoral greed and are mired in wrong customs. Taking up knives, they murder each other, and many people perish. This is the cause, this is the reason why nowadays human numbers have dwindled.

“Furthermore, because nowadays humans love only illicit desires…the heavens [deva worlds on superior planes of existence] do not provide enough rain, so there’s famine, bad harvests, with blighted crops that shrivel into dry straw. And many people perish. This is the cause, this is the reason why nowadays human numbers have dwindled.

“Furthermore, because nowadays humans love only illicit desires…native spirits let vicious monsters [cryptids] loose. And many people perish. This is the cause, this is the reason why nowadays human numbers have dwindled.”

“Excellent, Master Gotama, excellent! …From this day forward, may Master Gotama remember me as a lay follower who has gone [to the Buddha, Dhamma, and Sangha] for refuge for life.” More: suttacentral.net

Going Zen at home with Jennifer Garner

Balance: Taoist-Buddhist yin-yang symbol showing the seeds of the opposite on each side

Let's go to Jen Affleck's house to help her.
(Homes & Garden) Thoughts of a Los Angeles "farmhouse" may not immediately lead to a Zen Garden (or, more specifically, a pool area), but Hollywood actor Jennifer Garner has just challenged our conventions.

The actress's pared-back exterior space (architecturally designed by Steve Giannetti) makes a case for minimalist garden design – most notably thanks to its lack of planting, poolside furniture, and accessories.
  • The Zen of Jen (and Ben) | Marie Claire She's the nicest girl in town, but as a newish mom in 2007 and as Ben Affleck's wife, Jennifer Garner is finally learning to show some steel. Now in 2024 he's miserable because Latin dreamboat Jennifer Lopez has dumped him again, so Jen and Matt Damon have to keep him off the ledge.

However, despite the absence of decoration, Garner's pool area is anything but boring. Instead, it's soothing, grounding, and designed so that the wood (from both the house and the decking) can take center stage.
  • Zen is a Japanese word from Chinese (Chán). The Korean (Sŏn), Vietnamese (Thiền), Pali (Jhana), and Sanskrit (Dhyana) are all words for "meditation," more specifically a kind of serene state of absorption. "Zen" in everyday use refers to the practices in the popular imagination rather than a Mahayana Buddhist school that originated in China (禪宗, chánzōng, the Chan School, "meditation school") or the Buddha-mind school (佛心宗, fóxīnzōng) [1] that later developed into various sub-schools and branches. Zen was strongly influenced by Taoism ☯️, especially Neo-Daoist thought, and developed into a distinct school of Chinese Buddhism [2]. China got Zen from India, Chán deriving from Buddhist dhyana. It then spread south to Vietnam and became Vietnamese Thiền, northeast to Korea to become Seon Buddhism, and east to Japan, becoming Japanese Zen Buddhism [3]. Zen emphasizes serenity meditation practice and direct insight into one's own innate "Buddha nature" (見性, Chinese jiànxìng, Japanese kenshō), and the personal expression of this insight in daily life for the benefit of others [4, 5]. • (Marie Claire) A rolled-up yoga mat and a baby stroller is pretty much all you need to blend in at the farmhouse-red Brentwood Country Mart in West Los Angeles [outside of Tinsel Town, closer to UCLA], where Jennifer Garner has asked me to meet her. The cozy-looking place is an apt choice for Hollywood's most down-to-earth star, except for the novelty item being sold at the bakery today: $5 cupcakes commemorating Paris Hilton's imminent trip to jail. There's a camera crew set up by the cash register. In a pair of blue jeans, a short-sleeve polka-dot blouse, and sneakers, Garner is walking along...when I stroll over to say hi. At which point she shoots me a curt "hello" and turns her back. Cuts me dead, [b*tch]. But it's half of the Bennifer! More

Alongside Garner's (unintentional) approval, experts say we owe the rise of Zen-style gardens to their therapeutic qualities – many of which translate to spaces of all sizes (whether we have a pool or not). The key is in the simplicity, they explain.

"Compared to cottage and country garden-style gardens, this style of outdoor space is uncomplicated and paired back. It doesn’t feature a lot of different flowers, creating a sense of peace and tranquility," comments Marcus Eyles, the horticultural director at Dobbies.
"The aim is to create a space with a modern feel – light and clean lines are important when it comes to establishing a sense of Zen." More

(Architectural Digest) Sept. 3, 2024: Today, AD is welcomed by Jennifer Garner to tour her farm-style home in Los Angeles. When designing Garner’s home, there was no Pinterest board or pictures from a magazine; it was simply an in-depth discussion with designers Steve and Brooke Giannetti and a watercolor painting of their vision. Together, they designed a farmhouse-style oasis full of warmth and character. From her wooden kitchen with a dedicated baking station to an orchard in the backyard, it’s easy to forget Garner lives among the hustle and bustle of LA. “I wanted it to feel old and cool and historic, but I also wanted to make it work for a big family with a lot of things going on.”

Mindfulness in Mother Nature (exercise)

Mother Earth (Bhumi, Terra, Gaia), it may be said, is an enigmatic and magical source of wonder. From the delightful colors of the sunrise to the hypnotic light of a full moon, Mother Earth provides limitless beauty and awe.

However, she actually does a lot more than only creating spellbinding sights. She creates life-affirming experiences from connecting to her.

The seasons, for example, are opportunities for rebirth, growth, recreation, and rest. Here are some reasons we should communicate with Mother Earth:

Limitless abundance
We better start by getting out among the trees.
We may grow our vegetable and herb garden, gather fruit from orchards look to the Moon, charts of the stars, or the sun for guidance, select crystals or medicinal and entheogenic herbs for healing. Why? Mother Earth gives us everything we need.

When we are aware and appreciative, we look after what we have been given, and Mother Earth is no exception. In order to excite our gratitude, she gives us provisions and resources.

Limitless empowerment
The woodland devas are all around.
Our intuitive and psychic abilities are actually enhanced when we respect Mother Earth. This is because their natural home is grounded in her warm embrace. While we appreciate, we absorb healing energies and vibrations of various frequencies in line with her rhythms. In this way, Mother Earth is constantly sharing with us, divine powers of a goddess.

Joy and happiness on tap
Mother Nature is a powerful living goddess.
When we are in nature, we boost our feelgood energies, clear our minds, and become inspired to act and express ourselves creatively. Positively energized, we better focus our energies on bringing joy into our lives.

Mother Nature gives us many wonderful opportunities to connect to our psychic selves. Mindfully walking in nature makes us more conscious with improved sensory apparatuses and powers.

Mother Nature reminds us that we are part of everything around us, a web of life. We form a part of her. To bring that to life and give it concrete meaning, here is a walking meditation to connect ourselves with the world beneath our sensitive feet.

Dryads inhabit trees.
Every time we feel we need to harmonize and ground ourselves, simply find nature and perform this:
  • As we start our walk, ask our Mother Nature for help to find the solution to any problem we are facing.
  • Focus on the breath and permit the senses to see, hear, and otherwise feel ourselves supported.
  • Remain aware that Mother Nature is simply the power in our stride, the air in our lungs, the beating of our heart.
  • Listen to the answers she gives, the solutions that will solve our problems and bring peace.
  • Stop. Close the eyes, place hands over heart, and thank her for everything she does.
We are part of Mother Earth, the essence of her love, the spark that ignites. Mother Earth loves us. Source: "How to Better Channel the Energies of Mother Nature and Make Them Work in Your Favor"

What is "mindfulness"?
What is that? - I don't know. I just let it be.
The Buddha talked about sati as a human capacity to be aware of the present in a dispassionate, nonreactive, untangled way. How do we become entangled? We follow automatic habits (going through life on "automatic pilot" rather than actually living). Our most pronounced habit is to... CONTINUED: Practice: What is "mindfulness"?

Death Valley Life: A Day at Lake Manly and a tour of guest trailer
(Wonderhussy Adventures) Oct. 25, 2023: Death Valley Life #38: Lake Manly is a real lake in the middle of the hottest desert in the world, Death Valley, California. It rained a lot after the drought, and the water filled up. There are even indigenous pup fish that live here year around, which may spread into the basin and spawn. Death Valley Park has finally reopened, so desert alcoholic Wonderhussy figured she should go out and see the "lake" that is temporarily filling Badwater Basin near Furnace Creek -- a rare event that only happens after extraordinary rainfall. But one can't really "swim" in Lake Manly because it's too shallow and salty...so she goes home and sets about getting a fifth wheel travel trailer ready for Mike Z to stay in while he's here helping with projects.

Emotional contagion: We catch/spread feelings

Muse; Ali Pattillo (inverse.com, 2/20/24, originally published 9/5/20); Crystal Quintero, Seth Auberon (eds.), Wisdom Quarterly

Emotional contagion: How humans catch and spread feelings without ever knowing
Oh my gosh, am I responsible for their reactions?
While some people think they are perpetually cool, calm, and collected, they're not. At least, not all the time.

Across the board, human beings are a roller coaster of emotions, feelings, and moods. According to 25 years of data, these emotions spread like wildfire person to person. Often, they influence a group or organization's collective mood in positive or negative ways.

“We're all walking mood inductors.”

This social phenomenon, called "emotional contagion," permeates all human interactions, influencing not only how people feel, but how they think and behave. Emotional contagion is constant and pervasive, yet most of the time we have no idea it's going on.

Sigal Barsade, a professor at the University of Pennsylvania Wharton School of Business, has studied emotional contagion for more than 25 years.

Neurological benefit to daydreaming at work?
As humans, emotional contagion is one of our "primary delivery systems for emotion," Barsade tells Inverse. "Emotional contagion is the act of person A feeling the emotions that person B is showing, to some extent."

This week, Inverse explores how to understand emotional contagion, prevent your bad moods from negatively impacting others, and leverage the concept to become a more positive force in the world.

"By understanding this phenomenon, that is a form of inoculation against emotional contagion," Barsade says. "It's the first step."

I’m Ali Pattillo and this is Strategy, a series packed with actionable tips to help you make the most out of your life, career, and finances.

Catching feelings — Years before Barsade completed her organizational psychology training, a common office scenario spurred her to investigate how emotions spread.

She was working in an open-office layout close to a particularly negative coworker — the sort who seemed to dampen the entire team's mood whenever she was around.

The negative atmosphere didn't arise from this coworker’s yelling, or even what she said, Barsade recalls. Rather, it was her subtle facial expressions, verbal delivery, and general energy. More:

Che, part Irish, gets monument in Ireland

Prof. Manuel Barcia, Univ. of Leeds (aljazeera.com, 3/30/12); Eds., Wisdom Quarterly

LEEDS, United Kingdom – The normally peaceful Irish city of Galway, on the west coast of Ireland, has made the news.

This is due to the polemical decision of its city council to build a monument to Cuban freedom fighter Ernesto “Che” Guevara.

Could a Latinx hippie be a freedom fighter?
The decision has been based on the fact that Che, a descendant of the Lynch clan, was himself partly Irish, Cuban, and Argentinian.

This attempt to celebrate Guevara’s Irish heritage has been met with resistance in some conservative quarters within Ireland and subsequently in the United States.

Revolutionary hero Che (Alberto Korda, 3/5/60)
First, Irish businessman and campaigner Declan Ganley suggested the monument would drive away tourism from Galway – an unlikely outcome, as it is well-known that Che Guevara’s image is found among the most popular merchandise in the world.

Then, Yale-based academic Carlos Eire and Republican Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lethinen added their voices to Ganley’s and requested that, since Guevara was a murderer and a war criminal, the Irish should scrap the project altogether and, in the words of the latter, build instead a monument to “the enslaved Cuban people.”

“Guevara was much more than a grotesque criminal, as it has been suggested.” One can only wonder, why this opposition all of a sudden? More importantly, do they have a point?

I've got the rebel "fighting Irish" spirit in me.
Ernesto Guevara, better known simply as “Che,” was a guerrilla ["little war"] fighter and one of the leaders of the Cuban Revolution of 1959.

Soon after coming to power, Guevara was in charge of carrying out a number of executions of people – some accounts mention hundreds – that the new Cuban leadership considered to be “enemies of the revolution.” More

Meditate like a tree

Ajahn Lee via Ven. Sujato (Gonzo Dhamma), Ellie Askew, Dhr. Seven (ed.), Wisdom Quarterly

Some kinds of trees make themselves quiet in ways we can see:

We say that they "sleep." At night, they fold up their leaves. If you lie down under them, you’ll have a clear view of the stars in the nighttime sky.

But when day comes, they’ll spread out their leaves and give a dense shade. This is a good lesson for the mind:

When you sit in meditation, close only your eyes. Keep your mind bright and alert, like a tree that closes its leaves and thus doesn’t obstruct our view of the stars.

How to remain unflappable (sutra)

Dhr. Seven, E. Darcey (eds.); Ven. Sujato (trans), Simile of the Saw (MN 21), Sutta Central

Thus have I heard. At one time the Buddha was staying near Sāvatthī in Jeta’s Grove in the monastery donated by Anāthapiṇḍika....

[He said to one meditator:] “So if anyone criticizes [people you like] in your presence, give up the way of laypeople. Instead, train yourself, saying:

“‘My mind will remain [unflappable and] unaffected. I will not utter bad words. I will remain [calm and] full of compassion, with a friendly heart free of the stain of hate.’ That is how to train yourself.

"So even if someone strikes [people you like] with fists, stones, rods, and swords in your presence, give up the way of laypeople.

“Instead, train yourself like this, saying: ‘My mind will remain unaffected. I will utter no bad words. I will remain [calm and] full of compassion, with a friendly heart free of the stain of hate.’ That is how to train yourself.

“Even if anyone were to criticize you to your face, give up the way of laypeople. Train yourself, saying: ‘My mind will remain unaffected. I will utter no bad words. I will remain full of compassion, with a  friendly heart free if the stain of hate.’ That is how to train yourself.

“Even if someone strikes you with fists, stones, rods, and/or swords, give up the way of laypeople. Instead, if that happens, train yourself, saying: ‘My mind will remain unaffected. I will utter no bad words. I will remain full of compassion, with a friendly heart free of the stain of hate.’ That is how to train yourself.”

Eating once
Then the Buddha said to the monastics: “Meditators, I used to be satisfied with the meditators [in this spiritual community]. I addressed them:

“‘I eat food during one sitting per day. Doing so, I remain healthy and well, nimble, strong, and live comfortably. Eat food during one sitting per day. Doing so, you will remain healthy and well, nimble, strong, and live comfortably.’ I did not have to keep on urging and instructing those meditators; I only prompted their mindfulness.

Charioteer
“Suppose a chariot stood harnessed to thoroughbreds at a level crossroads, with a goad at the ready. An expert horse trainer, a master charioteer, might mount that chariot, taking the reins in the right hand, the goad in the left. The charioteer could then drive out and back wherever and whenever.

“In the same way, I did not have to keep urging and instructing those meditators; I only prompted their mindfulness. So, meditators, give up what is unskillful and instead devote yourselves to skillful things. In this way you will achieve growth, development, and maturity in this Dharma and Discipline (this teaching and training).

Managing the trees
“Suppose that not far from a town or village there were a large grove of sal trees choked with castor oil weeds. And along comes a person who wants to help protect and nurture that grove.

“That person would cut down the crooked sal saplings that were robbing the trees and throw them out. That person would then clean up the interior of the grove and properly care for the straight, well-formed sal saplings.

“In this way, in due course, that sal tree grove would grow, increase, and mature. In the same way, meditators, give up what is unskillful and instead devote yourselves to skillful things. In this way you will achieve growth, development, and maturity in this Dharma and Discipline.

The bad mistress
“Once upon a time, meditators, right here in Sāvatthī there was a housewife named Vedehikā. She had this good reputation: ‘The housewife Vedehikā is sweet, even-tempered, and calm.’ Vedehikā had a maid named Kāḷī who was skilled, tireless, and organized her work well.

“Then Kāḷī thought: ‘My mistress [female master] has a good reputation for being sweet, even-tempered, and calm. But does she actually have anger in her and just not show it? Or is she free of anger? Or is it just because my work is organized well that she does not show anger, even though she still has it inside? Why don’t I test my mistress?’

“So Kāḷī purposely got up late. Vedehikā said to her: ‘What is this, Kāḷī?’ ‘What, madam?’ ‘You getting up late—what’s the matter?’ ‘That's nothing, madam.’ ‘That's nothing? You're bad to get up late!’

“Angry and upset, she scowled. Then Kāḷī thought: ‘My mistress actually has anger in her and just hides it. It is not that she is free of anger. It is because my work is organized well that she does not show anger even though she still has it inside. Why don’t I test my mistress further?’

“So Kāḷī got up later. And Vedehikā said to her: ‘What's this, Kāḷī?’ ‘What, madam?’ ‘You getting up later—what’s up with you?’ ‘Nothing’s up, madam.’ ‘Nothing, bad girl, you got up later!’ Angry and upset, she uttered angry words.

“Then Kāḷī thought: ‘My mistress actually has anger and just doesn’t show it. It’s not that she’s free of anger. It’s because my work is organized well that she doesn’t show anger though she still has it inside. Why don’t I test my mistress further?’

“So Kāḷī got up even later. Vedehikā said: ‘What is this, Kāḷī?’ ‘What, madam?’ ‘You getting up even later -- what’s up?’ ‘Nothing’s up, madam.’ ‘Nothing, bad girl, but you get up even later!’ Angry and upset, she grabbed a rolling pin and struck Kāḷī on the head, cutting her skin. Then Kāḷī, blood pouring from her head, denounced her mistress to the neighbors:

“‘See, ladies, what the ‘sweet one’ did! See what the ‘even tempered one’ did! See what the ‘calm one’ did! How on earth can she grab a rolling pin and strike her only maid on the head, cutting her open, just for getting up late?’

“Then after some time the housewife Vedehikā got a bad reputation: ‘The housewife Vedehikā is fierce, ill-tempered, and not calm at all.’

Monastics
“In the same way, a meditator may be the sweetest of the sweet, the most even tempered of the even tempered, the calmest of the calm, so long as he or she does not encounter any disagreeable criticism.

“But it’s when they encounter disagreeable criticism that one will know whether they are really sweet, even tempered, and calm. I do not say that a monastic is easy to admonish if he or she makes him or herself easy to admonish only for the sake of robes, alms food, lodgings, and medicines for the sick.

“Why is that? It is because when they do not get robes, alms food, lodgings, and medicines for the sick, they are no longer easy to admonish. But when a monastic is easy to admonish purely because they honor, respect, revere, worship, and venerate the Dharma [the teachings that lead to enlightenment], then I say that they are easy to admonish.

“So, meditators, train yourselves: ‘We will be easy to admonish because we honor, respect, revere, worship, and venerate the Dharma.’ That is how to train yourself.

The world will criticize
“Monastics, there are five ways in which others might criticize you. Their speech may be:
  1. timely or untimely
  2. true or false
  3. gentle or harsh
  4. beneficial or harmful
  5. from a heart of love or from a heart of hate.
“When others criticize you, they may do so in any of these ways. If that happens, train yourselves: ‘Our minds will remain unaffected. We will utter no bad words. We will remain full of compassion, with a friendly heart free of the stain of hate.

“‘We will meditate spreading a heart full of loving-friendliness to that person. And with them as a basis, we will meditate spreading a heart full of loving-friendliness to everyone in the world -- abundant, expansive, unlimited, free of enmity and ill will.’ That is how to train yourself.

De-earth the earth
“Suppose a person were to come along carrying a shovel and basket and say: ‘I'll make this great earth earthless!’ And say she or he were to dig all over, scatter dirt all over, spit all over, urinate all over, saying: ‘Be earthless! Be earthless!’ What do you think, meditators, could that person make this great earth earthless?”

“No, venerable sir. And why is that? It is because this great earth is deep and unfathomable. It would not be easy to make it earthless. That person would only grow weary and frustrated.”

“In the same way, there are these five ways in which others might criticize you. Their speech may be:
  1. timely or untimely
  2. true or false
  3. gentle or harsh
  4. beneficial or harmful
  5. from a heart of love or from a heart of hate.
“When others criticize you they may do so in any of these ways. If that happens, train yourselves: ‘Our minds will remain unaffected. We will utter no bad words. We will remain full of compassion, with a friendly heart free of the stain of hate.

Paint on air
“Suppose a person were to come along with dye -- red lac, turmeric, indigo, or rose madder -- and say: ‘I shall draw pictures in the air, making pictures appear there.’ What do you think, meditators, could that person draw pictures in the air?”

“No, venerable sir. And why is that? It is because the air is formless and invisible. It is not easy to draw pictures there. That person will only grow weary and frustrated.”

Set fire to water
“Suppose a person were to come along carrying a blazing grass torch and say: ‘I'll burn and scorch the river Ganges with this blazing grass torch.’ What do you think, meditators? Could that person burn and scorch the river Ganges with a blazing grass torch?”

“No, venerable sir. Why is that? It is because the river Ganges is deep and unfathomable. It’s not easy to burn and scorch it with a blazing grass torch. That person will eventually get weary and frustrated.”

“In the same way, there are these five ways in which others might criticize you…

The catskin bag
“Suppose there were a catskin bag that was rubbed, well-rubbed, very well-rubbed, soft, silky, free of rustling and crackling. Then a person comes along carrying a stick and stone and says:

“‘I'll make this supple catskin bag rustle and crackle with this stick and stone.’ What do you think, meditators? Could that person make that supple catskin bag rustle and crackle with that stick and stone?”

“No, sir. And why is that? It is because that catskin bag is rubbed, well-rubbed, very well-rubbed, soft, supple, free of rustling and crackling. It is not easy to make it rustle or crackle with a stick or stone. That person will only grow weary and frustrated.”

“In the same way, there are these five ways in which others might criticize you. Their speech may be:
  1. timely or untimely
  2. true or false
  3. gentle or harsh
  4. beneficial or harmful
  5. from a heart of love or from a heart of hate.
“When others criticize you, they may do so in any of these ways. If that happens, train yourselves: ‘Our minds will remain unaffected. We will utter no bad words. We will remain full of compassion, with a heart full of loving friendliness free of the stain of hate.

“We will meditate spreading a heart of loving-friendliness to that person. And with that person as the basis, we will meditate spreading a heart full of love to everyone in the world -- abundant, expansive, limitless, free of enmity and ill will.’ That is how to train yourself.

The simile of the two-handled saw
“Even if despicable bandits were to sever you limb from limb with a two-handled saw, anyone who held onto a malevolent thought on account of that would not be following my instructions.

“If that happens, train yourselves: ‘Our minds will remain unaffected. We will utter no bad words. We will remain full of compassion, with a heart full of love and free of the stain of hate. We will meditate spreading a heart full of love to that person.

“And with that person as the basis, we will meditate spreading a heart full of loving-friendliness to everyone in the world -- abundant, expansive, unlimited, free of enmity and ill will.’ That is how to train yourself.

“If you frequently reflect on this advice -- the simile of the saw -- do you see ANY criticism, large or small, that you could not endure?”

“No, venerable sir.”

“So, meditators, frequently reflect on this advice, the simile of the saw. This will be for welfare and happiness for a  long time.”

That is what the Buddha said. Satisfied, the monastics were happy with what the Buddha said.
