2 Live Crew can clean my she. N.W.A, Boi! |
I can make a viral TikTok move to this beat! |
Driving through Florida, it was blasting on the radio. It seemed funny, vulgar, enough to get them on the PMRC's Most Hated Lists with Floridian death metal act like Cannibal Corpse. In the underground music scene, it was a mark of distinction to get on such lists. How could this band of rappers be a danger to anyone? Moral decay, cultural erosion, a move away from EuroAmerican mores? There were other dangers.
If 2 Live Crew were a threat, Salt-N-Pepa was the nice version, with much more appeal and a catchier song, pretty much saying the same thing but not provoking resistance, more seduction than groping. Now, through our American cultural hegemony, Japan has picked up our music styles, fashion trends, and has put an even broader commercial spin to our hits.
One has to wonder what the Zen and Nichirin Buddhist and Shinto parents of these performers must think of all this. If Christian parents worried that their daughters were doing the devil's work, what must Japanese parents think of scaring up the kami (spirits, gods, shapeshifters) with such bubblegum pop? It's like the whole world is waiting for the next Psy to break in Seoul.
