The Origins of Halloween (video)

The Roots of Hallowe’en: Is it possible to observe a pre-commercialized version?
Christopher Nyerges, PasadenaWeekly.com, 10/31/24 edited by Wisdom Quarterly
Written by ghost, author's late wife
Why has the day of All Hallows Eve — Hallowe’en — devolved into a day of fun and fear? How was this once-Holy Day commemorated before it was all commercialized into a sexy and scary night? Is it possible to discover the roots of this day and observe it in its original fashion today?

My circle of friends attempted to answer these questions. We determined that we’d need to dig up whatever historical facts [like Sir Frazer's The Golden Bough] we could find that show how this day was commemorated before the Year 1700, more or less.
  • The Golden Bough: A Study in Comparative Religion (retitled The Golden Bough: A Study in Magic and Religion in its second edition, gutenberg.org)
Also by the author: Wild Edible Plants of N. America
Though we couldn’t be 100% certain, we at least assumed that “commercialization” didn’t really exist in 1700. All of the European and some American commemorations before that year probably retained some semblance of what the day was originally all about. So, first, let’s begin with the day.

It is believed that the ancient Celts observed something called a “Samhain festival” toward the end of October. The World Book Encyclopedia states: “The Celts believed that the dead could walk among the living at this time.”

During Samhain (pronounced \sao-in\), the living could visit with the dead. Elements of the customs can be traced to a Druid ceremony in pre-Christian times.

The Celts had festivals for two major gods — a sun god and a god of the dead (called Samhain), whose festival was held on Nov. 1st, the beginning of the Celtic New Year.  More: The Roots of Hallowe’en

Trump panics as Howard Stern leaks bombshell footage
(Occupy Democrats) Oct. 31, 2024: Howard Stern just blindsided Donald Trump and his campaign by leaking bombshell footage that will strike fear in the heart of every single voter who cares about preserving our freedoms and civil rights. "Well done, Howard!" Occupy Democrats (makers of this video and title) states, when Stern does not seem to appear even once in this story other than to say he's the source of the leak. What exactly was leaked, a clip from the John Kobylt Show (right wing hate radio on KFI AM 640, iheart.com)? Stern, a New Yorker and Kamala/Tim supporter, hates The Donald and has for a long time. Trump gets no love from him anymore, so it wouldn't be a surprise if he did leak something, if he had it or could get it. But Stern has no access. Joe Rogan could get something out of Trump, but he's too afraid of offending him and his new access to the White House and its favors. This whole "breaking news" story seems like a crock. The only thing it really says it that Trump lied, does know what Project 2025 is, and is going to hire ex-policeman Tom Homan, the author of Project 2025.

The Halloween Buddhist monk

The majority of Buddhist monastics opt for cremation, not sitting up. Some may be in meditating.

This skeleton will do best for contemplation.
(Lion's Roar) It was this Burmese Buddhist monk’s first visit to America, and it was my first real visit with a monk. He was staying at a house in the Chicago suburbs, teaching anapanasati meditation — “watching the breath” — to anyone interested enough to stop by.

I was eager to learn how to meditate (without bursting out laughing, like the first time I tried it), so he invited me to come and hang out for a few days.

The Dharma of Star Wars
Those five days in late October were a cultural exchange. The monk taught me how to watch my breath: in-out, in-out, breathing in, breathing out. And if I remember correctly, I got him to watch Star Wars.

On the morning of October 31st, somewhat disconnected from the world, I suddenly remembered it was Halloween. I explained that children might be coming by that night trick-or-treating and that we should be ready. He’d never heard of Halloween and asked me to tell him about it. So I did.

I gave him the lowdown on the holiday: ghosts, goblins, costumes, skeletons

.
Bag of Bones (Ven. Khantipalo)
Skeletons!” he exclaimed suddenly. “That is wonderful, wonderful! In Burma we do skeleton meditation [charnel ground contemplations on repulsiveness]. Very good, very good. We must get a skeleton! Continue.”

Then I explained trick-or-treating.

“Oh, that is wonderful. So much opportunity for giving. We must have lots of candy for the children and tell them all to come here. Wonderful, wonderful!”
"Train yourself to let go of everything you fear to lose" is wise advice either way.
.
Why are you always so cheerful, R2D2?
So we hopped in the car, and I drove him to a big discount store. Or at least tried to — it was raining hard, and my windshield wipers were stuck, so I couldn’t see anything. We got lost, ending up on a highway I never meant to take.

“No matter,” he said, reassuring me with a serene smile. “This is wonderful. Now I am seeing more of this city. Very good.”

Behold the repulsive aspects of this body
When we finally found the store, I took him to the Halloween aisle, where he carefully scrutinized the skeletons to find one that would serve our purpose best. And what would that purpose be, exactly? I wasn’t sure whether we were going to hang the skeleton on the outside of the front door or sit facing it with legs crossed, contemplating our mortality.

In the end he settled on the biggest one he could find, a four-foot hanging skeleton made of black-and-white cardboard bones strung together that glowed in the dark. I grabbed as many bags of candy as I could afford with the cash I had on hand (my favorite brands, of course).
  • Favorite Halloween Candies (pretty-poison for metabolic diseases):
  • (1) Reese's Peanut Butter Cups, (2) M&Ms, (3) Snickers, (4) Peanut M&M's, (5) Twix, (6) Kit Kat, (7) Hershey's Milk Chocolate, (8) Milky Way, (9) Sour Patch Kids, (10) Skittles.
The Zen of R2-D2 (Bortolin)
There were already a few people in costume out and about, buying last-minute supplies. My monk friend was wearing the same [Buddhist saffron, purplish, ochre, pumpkin-colored] rusty-brown robe he wore every day, wrapped around him like a pleated toga and rubber flip-flops totally unsuited to the fall weather.

In the checkout line, we received lots of puzzled looks and raised eyebrows as people tried to figure out what exactly this guy was supposed to be dressed up as.

When we got back to the house, my monk friend started shoving the one-pound bags of bite-size candy bars, unopened, up against the windows.

“What are you doing?” I asked, surprised.

“This is so the children will know we have candy for them,” he said, beaming with pride.

“They will see the candy and they will come here.”

I explained that having the lights on would probably be a good enough sign and that hanging the skeleton on the door would also be, um, a dead giveaway. I suggested we put the candy on a tray, but he insisted we leave at least one bag where the kids would be most likely to see it [and know where to put the rock to grab it]. He put the rest into a big salad bowl.

Finally, shortly after dark, the first kids arrived.

I'm U Fester, Buddhist monk, this year!
“TRICK OR TREAT!” the little voices shouted as the monk opened the door, then their eyes went wide. “What are you supposed to be?” they asked, looking up, amazed and befuddled by his costume.

“I am Buddhist monk!” he said, grinning. That didn’t quite register with the kids, who quickly shifted their attention to the candy on offer.

“Take more, take more!” he insisted. “We must give if we want to receive.”

Dharma Punx' Noah Levine (Against the Stream)
After closing the door, he turned to me with a radiant smile.

“All my life I have begging bowl. But this is not begging bowl. Today I have giving bowl! Wonderful, wonderful. I like Halloween!

The next day, my monk friend sat and stared serenely at the glow-in-the-dark skeleton, contemplating [the repulsive aspects of this body and] his own mortality, while I munched on leftover bite-size candy bars, contemplating my unusual Buddhist Halloween.

Scare Yourself Awake
Some of Tricycle magazine's spookiest reads for Halloween
(Tricycle) Today is Halloween, and here’s the chilling secret: Buddhism loves ghosts (pretas, petas). And not just the hungry kind. Demons, spirits, and other supernatural creatures abound in the Buddhist canon, and they continue to play a role in the lives of many Buddhist practitioners today.

To some skeptics, all those ghoulish beings are just "psychological" tropes, mere projections of unenlightened minds. But like any good teacher, the things that go bump in the night have a way of upending our notions about what we hold to be real and unreal.

So fill your oryoki bowls with mini Milky Ways, and descend into the hellish and haunted realms, with these seven articles from the Tricycle archives that highlight the mysterious roles that shapeshifting monsters, specters, ghosts, and zombies have played in Buddhist traditions throughout history.

For the easily frightened, a selection of articles about overcoming fear through meditation and Buddhist teachings is also included. Happy Halloween!

Buddhist Halloween Horrors
The Monsters of Buddhism—Inside and Out by Julia Hirsch
An abridged guide to Buddhist monsters and the lessons they hold about the possibility of transformation — such as the child-eating Kishimojin, who eventually purifies her karma and becomes the Buddha-endorsed guardian deity of mothers and children. Alternatively, a horror movie with a happy ending. More

How to Watch a Thai Ghost Movie by May Cat
A Thai cinephile writes about the karma-fueled haunting of the 2009 Thai horror flick Novice. A young man ordains as a novice monk but is tormented by the misdeeds (unskillful karma) of his past. In the end, the novice gets his due, and the hungry ghosts doom him to life as one of their own. More

Ghosts, Gods, and the Denizens of Hell by Prof. Donald Lopez, Jr.
Buddhist studies scholar Donald Lopez Jr. provides an introduction to [Mahayana's] six realms — including the less than desirable sectors of existence. “There are eight hot hells and eight cold hells, four neighboring hells, and a number of trifling hells,” he writes, reminding us that even though human existence is tough, it’s still the best (and only) shot we have at freedom from samsara

Treasury of Lives: Halloween Edition by Harry Einhorn
Tibetan cosmology is populated with interesting paranormal creatures, like deloks — people who died, visited the lower realms, and returned to warn those in the human realm about the punishments that await them unless they start walking an ethical path.

Also in Tibetan Buddhism is a model of fear-facing Buddhist practice in the female Master Machik Labron (1055–1149), who encouraged her students to do chöd, tantric practice in burial grounds and other spooky places.

The Old Human Demoness by Chokey Dolma
This haunting tale by Chokey Dolma showcases the richness of Tibetan ghost stories. Once upon a time, a young monk disobeys his teacher’s order to buy meat only as given without asking for more, and he becomes marked by evil spirits. To avoid becoming demon food, the young monk travels to Lhasa and requests the aid of a mysterious old woman. Although she agrees to help hide him from the demons, the young monk eventually discovers there is more to this woman than meets the eye.

Bringing Hungry Ghosts Out of Hiding, Andy Rotman in conversation with Julia Hirsch
Andy Rotman, a scholar of South Asian religions at Smith College and one of the few academics researching the history of hungry ghosts, explains what the most wretched beings of the Buddhist cosmos can teach us about greed, suffering, and the dharma.

Into the Demon’s Mouth, by Aura Glaser
Through a modern retelling of the Buddhist story of the great Tibetan saint Milarepa and the demons who inhabited his cave, Glaser invokes Carl Gustav Jung, Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche, and others to illustrate how remaining present among difficult life situations can help us to work with problems and to even learn from them. A parable with elements of horror, Glaser’s writing opens up the story so that we can learn to face our fears with clarity and kindness.

FEAR (FEAR)
Harnessing Horror Through Meditation by Biju Sukumaran
After getting stuck on Disneyland’s Space Mountain ride as a child, Biju Sukumaran has had a phobia of heights and small spaces. Recently, he started drawing from the Buddhist practices of vipassana (insight) and Tibetan chöd meditation to face his fears of flying, horror movies and, yes, even roller coasters.

A Safe Container for Fear by Josh Korda
What does fear feel like in the body? Approaching feelings of unease, anxiety, and social discomfort with questions like these, Josh Korda suggests, can help untangle the web of fear we weave for ourselves.

Facing Fear by Lama Tsony
Coming back to the focal point of meditation (the breath, posture, or a visualization) can help us practice and move through our fears, Lama Tsony writes. Taking refuge or seeking guidance from a spiritual teacher or friend offers the support we need as we explore the uncomfortable zones of our minds.

The Terror Within by Zenju Earthlyn Manuel
In a meditation on the different ways fear has come up in her own life and practice, Zen priest, author, and artist Zenju Earthlyn Manuel uses lessons from the Heart Sutra and the Buddha’s teachings on the Five Hindrances to provide steps for breaking out of cycles of anxiety and to acknowledge the roots of our fear as a conditioned state that is accumulated over a lifetime. By providing steps for breathing into these feelings and releasing them, Manuel invites readers not to hide from their fear but to embrace it as an act of liberation. Source

Demons, possession hidden from public

They're hiding truth about demons from public

You don't believe in demons, do you?

Burning witches ('wise ones') in Salem

What really happened during the Salem Witch Trials | Brian A. Pavlac

I'm a sexy beer brewing witch
(TED-Ed) Dig into how the infamous Salem Witch Trials began and why they remain a cautionary tale of the dangers of groupthink and scapegoating.

You’ve been accused of a crime you did not commit. It’s impossible to prove your innocence. If you insist that you’re innocent anyway, you’ll likely be found guilty and executed. But if you confess, apologize, and implicate (accuse) others, you’ll be set free and they will be arrested. Hmm, what to do?

This was the choice facing those accused by killer Christians of "witchcraft" in Salem, Massachusetts in the 17th century. How did it happen? Brian A. Pavlac investigates.

The "Craft"?
Wisdom Quarterly COMMENTARY
Why, yes, I can drive stick
Hollywood giveth, and Hollywood taketh away. Movie makers and TV show runners create our image of "witches," warts and all. Thanks, Disney! *Sarcasm* But there's a serious his-story of oppression being promoted behind the scenes. No cat ladies allowed, no herbalists, healers, doulas, or "warlocks."

Fine and proper Christians go on rampages they say are ordered by the genocidal tribal god they worship and praise. Why do the war-god's bidding? It's very sad. Living in Judeo-Christian culture, it's difficult to recover what it meant to be "pagan."

What accoutrements do I need to get started?
Those Old Ways, which served us for many pre-Christian centuries, deserve to be preserved. The Wisdom of the East contributed to that wisdom.

It seems "Christians" (Cretins, Yahoos), imperial Romans promoting Ceasar's Messiah, just could not stand any competition of ideas, even if the main character in their narrative traveled to the mystic East to gain his realization and bring his healing gifts to the surface. Flooding hits Spain, many dead (BBC)

At least 72 158 people have been killed in Spain's rains and floods | BBC News

(BBC News) Oct. 30, 2024: [Though the rain in Spain falls mainly on the plain,] at least 72 158 people are known to be dead in the south-east, where flash flooding has caused “enormous destruction.”

Spanish rescue teams are working to find those feared missing, but damage to infrastructure (permanent structure used in day-to-day living) has made some communities hard to access.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez promised residents in affected areas that they would not be abandoned and announced a three-day mourning period.
  • UPDATE: At least 158 people are now known to have died after flash floods hit parts of Spain, particularly devastating communities in Valencia. Almost all the deaths, 155, have been recorded in the region, with two more in Castilla-La Mancha and another, a British man, in Andalusia. Emergency teams are continuing to search for those missing and hundreds of soldiers have been deployed to Valencia to assist with the operation. More

There has also been criticism of the civil protection agency -- which is deployed during natural disasters -- as it did not issue an alert until 20:15 local time on Tuesday, when the flooding had already caused a great deal of damage.
