Alan Watts: The Buddhist Secret (audio)
Alan Watts (alanwatts.org) via What do you desire?; A. Larson, Dhr. Seven, Wisdom Quarterly
.
The Buddhist Secret
Over time as fewer people realized enlightenment, Mahayana (Maya-yana?) came up with newer and more creative ways to trick oneself into realization, with the paradoxes of Zen, and stories of not trying, skillful means (upayas) and methods (yanas). Alan Watts explains them in the context of what this latter day form of Buddhism, which takes itself back by patriarchs to 200 years after the passing of the now little regarded historical Buddha, Siddhartha Gautama, the "Sage of the Shakyas [Saka/Scythians]" Shakyamuni.
.
What Mahayana set up in place of what the historical Buddha taught was falling back on Brahminical teaching based on the Vedas that today are generally referred to as Hinduism when in fact Buddhism, like Jainism, began as a revolutionary, anti-establishment wandering ascetic (shramana vs. brahmana) movement school. Buddhism in Japan, famous for Zen which it imported from China, came upon the conception of jah-riki vs. tah-riki: If self cannot become enlightened, then it must be done by other (likened to the Protestant Christian concept of "grace" over "works").
"We don't think our way into right action, but we can act our way into right thinking" is a good recovery-based summary of two of the factors of the Noble Eightfold Path. Support the WDYD channel to promote the great work of Alan Watts at patreon.com/whatdoyoudesire.

Tulsi Gabbard destroys Kamala Harris (video)
Tulsi Gabbard; Seth Auberon, Crystal Q., Pfc. Sandoval, Wisdom Quarterly COMMENTARY
Wisdom Quarterly would love to be able to support California's Kamala Harris, who is Native American and African American, BUT she is a long-time prosecutor. She has committed many misdeeds in that position, according to Tulsi Gabbard.
Attacking boring Biden to improve her standing in the ratings, someone finally stood up to Harris. Hawaii's Tulsi Gabbard, a military veteran who distinguished herself at the first Democratic debates a month ago, called out the former district attorney for her crimes and misdemeanors as prosecutor.
Gabbard had the dirt and did not let up. There must have been considerable research and digging into Harris' record, and Gabbard let her have it right in the face.
It was one of the evening's few highlights in Detroit. Commentator Jimmy Dore had much good to say about her after the previous debate. So far Gabbard has taken the only definitive anti-war position.
Gabbard garnered considerable interest in terms of Google searches and mentions by the mainstream media. She is making sure Google is not allowed to slow her down, filing suit against the giant for not being allowed to advertise her campaign after spiking rates of interest.

Second Coming of the Peacemaker Tulsi
Tim Black Show (TBTV, 2/19) reviews Tulsi Gabbard (tulsi2020.com), Meghan McCain (The View); Seth MacFarlane (Family Guy); Ashley Wells, Seth Auberon (eds.), Wisdom Quarterly
Peter fights back after being sexually assaulted by his doctor. This leads to the second coming of Jesus, who is shorter than expected. We don't know what a "savior" will look like ahead of time. Maybe it looks like Hawaiian peacemaker Tulsi Gabbard. She is loved but not set to be allowed into the third debate -- unless people donate $1 to put her over the top on the number of donors the party demands to be considered a serious candidate.
Tulsi Gabbard demolishes The View co-host Meghan McCain
(TBTV) Once again Tulsi Gabbard was smeared by war-friendly agents. This time it was The View's warmonger Meghan McCain. Tulsi Gabbard sets straight her positions on a series of issues.

Trip to the Deep South (video)
Stephen Fry in America (BBC); Ellie Askew, Crystal Q., Seth Auberon (eds.), Wisdom Quarterly
The Deep South
Cut to the chase for a summary of the Deep South: reincarnation of sex-deprived horses in Kentucky as equine slavery lives on. Then a man shows his ass-tattoo of Kentucky. KFC, anyone?
The Deep South
Stephen Fry in America is a six-part BBC TV series in which Mr. Fry travels across the USA, a country in which he was almost born. Just before he was born, his father was offered a job at Princeton U, NJ. But his daddy chose to turn it down in favor of Hampstead, England. In the series Fry travels, mostly in a London cab, through all 50 U.S. states. In Episode 02, it's the Deep South. There Fry tries to find out what makes the South as distinctive as everyone says it is from its Civil War manners to present-day weirdness.
South moves to Illinois: Juggalo Gathering
"It's a 'Southern' thing; y'all wouldn't understand." Southern is culturally-derived. It's born of the South. It has moved across the U.S. Fuse takes us South-adjacent into a "Gathering of the Juggalos" in neighboring Illinois, where two clowns created a movement of misfits that keep it real. They try to represent real life, not the glossy tourist postcard version of reality we see presented on television. Drugs, anyone? Let's go. "Inside the Gathering of the Juggalos" takes a look back at all the music and mayhem of Insane Clown Posse's annual festival at Cave-in-Rock, Illinois.

The meaning of the Zen Circle (Enso)
Faena Aleph (faena.com/aleph...); Amber Larson, Dhr. Seven (eds.), Wisdom Quarterly
“A circle as a vast space, which does not lack anything, nor does it have too much.”
Zen circle or enso (lionsroar.com) |
These are the words used in the Shin Jin Mei, a text dating back to the 6th century, to describe the great path of Zen.
This Japanese discipline, derived from Mahayana Buddhism, was founded by the monk Bodhidharma, who imported Buddhist dhyana (jhana, channa, ch'an, seon, zen “meditation or absorption”) practice to China.
Some say that Bodhidharma sat facing a wall in a Shaolin cave for nine years, meditating, until he reached true understanding.
According to legend, his shadow was impressed upon the rock, leaving the indelible proof of a serene figure in a meditating pose.
Just like that image, projected by the insistent presence of Master Bodhidharma’s shadow, enso (which in Japanese literally means “circle”) embodies the act of imprinting the artist’s essence through a single stunning circular stroke.
The interior of enso, as described in the verse in the Shin Jin Mei, is a space that symbolizes, in addition to vacuity, the inexistence of the mind as proposed by Bodhidharma, the essential void of which reality is comprised.
The Zen monk, after meditating with extreme discipline in zazen (“sitting”), holds the paintbrush firmly, drenches it in ink, and promptly exhales a perfect circle that represents... More

The garden is a pharmacy? - Plants heal. |
Q: The secret cause at the root of many conditions and diseases? A: Fungus. Occasionally, viruses and deficiencies and exposure to environmental toxins and parasites are also to blame.
The way to recover from disease is to use wild oils from nature, not the adulterated kind on store shelves. Wild oregano oil, for example, is powerful medicine.
CBD free of hexane and butane, common solvents that are completely toxic and lead to such conditions as migraine headaches and low usefulness of the plants of which they claim to be products.
Beet sugar is WORSE than cane sugar, which is bad even when it's brown and intact, due to the GMOs that are used in agricultural process rampant in the U.S. and elsewhere.
There are ways to heal diabetes with diet alone. There are incurable conditions that can be taken care of easily with the right diet of avoiding certain toxins and adding powerful plants.
Lyme disease, polycystic fibrosis, migraines, asthma, Crohn's disease, and so many more chronic conditions are treatable by nature's own compounds. LISTEN

2nd Democratic Debates: Bernie vs Liz (live)
ABC; Seth MacFarlane (Family Guy); Crystal Q., CC Liu, Sheldon S. (eds.), Wisdom Quarterly
Beloved spiritual teacher Marianne Williamson wins with Delaney coming in second then Bernie then Buttigeig. Yawn. Looks like four more years of Trump at this rate...unless tomorrow night is better.
We had an exciting first round of matches. Julian Castro won, and Tulsi Gabbard shot out of obscurity, helped by rightwing popularizers who want an easy-to-defeat opponent for Trump. Cory Booker couldn't close his eyes or calm down enough to make a positive impression, though he was more impressive than he had previously been in obscurity. Black Native American Kamala Harris, a former prosecutor with rightwing methods that the right would like more than the nominal left, try to take creepy old man Biden. That got her some notice. Marianne Williamson spoke truth to power, or at least pitched New Age tropes that will likely come to nothing in the political arena, but that Course in Miracles brought her this far. Gay millennial candidate Pete Buttigieg (Buddha-judge? Butt-I-judge?) had better make his best pitch, or he is likely to start polling somewhere behind Beto O'Rourke.

Save Mes Aynak: Peace in Afghanistan
Kathy Kelly with Host Amy Goodman (democracynow.org); Brent E. Huffman, Saving Mes Aynak; Amber Larson, Dhr. Seven, Pfc. Sandoval (eds.), Wisdom Quarterly
This is an extended conversation with Kathy Kelly, co-coordinator of Voices for Creative Nonviolence, a campaign to end U.S. military and economic warfare. She has made many trips to the U.S. War on Afghanistan and wrote an article for The Progressive headlined, “Afghans, Parched for Water, March for Peace.”
Mes Aynak ("Little Copper Well") is one of the world's largest unexcavated deposits of copper, gold, and rare earth minerals.
China paid impoverished Afghanistan for the mineral right of what has turned out to be the world's largest unexcavated Buddhist temple complexes. It is a vast square mile of monuments, reliquary mounds (stupas), statues, jewelry deposits, and an archeological dig site that would take generations to uncover.
U.S. Professor Brent E. Huffman is one of the only international voices trying to save Mes Aynak before it's even unearthed. Here Amy Goodman of DemocracyNow.org interviews peace activist Kathy Kelly about the situation in the area around Kabul.
The current capital of Kabul (Kabil, Kapil) is very reminiscent of the ancient Buddhist Kapilavastu, where the Buddha was raised, according to maverick Indian historian Ranajit Pal, Ph.D.
The Scythian/Shakyian (Saka) Land of the Buddha and his extended family/tribe is described in the texts as a vast and rugged land, uneven and uncultivated. It includes the three ancient former seasonal capitals all generally referred to as Kapilavastu but which likely included Mes Aynak and Bamiyan as the other two.
Of the three places the Shakyian/Saka/Scythian Prince Siddhartha was raised, Dr. Pal suggests Bamiyan was his home. But the texts clearly indicate that he had three, each with their own palace.
Bamiyan is the site of the world's largest Buddha statues, the largest of which is still in the ground and undamaged. According to National Geographic it is a 1,000-foot-long reclining-into-nirvana Buddha figure.
Mes Aynak is the richest, full of gold and copper. And Kabul is almost certainly the most strategically useful for maintaining a foothold on the land by an extended family, a great janapada.

Enlightenment is seeing the Dharma
Ajahn Chah (ajahnchah.org) via Ven. Sujato, Ellie Askew, Dhr. Seven (ed.), Wisdom Quarterly
What if there were a place to practice with others? (Dharma Meditation Initiative) |
.
What do I need to practice to see the dharma? |
The dharma (ultimate truth) the Buddha realized is the dharma that exists permanently in the world [where nothing is permanent other than the truth that can set us free].
It can be compared to ground water, which permanently exists in the ground. When someone wishes to dig a well, that person must dig down deep enough to reach the ground water.
The ground water is already there. The digger by digging does not create the water, but rather discovers what has always been there.
.
In the same way the Buddha did not invent the ultimate truth, the dharma. He did not decree the dharma. He merely rediscovered [like fully enlightened seers before him] and revealed what was already there.
.
Through [purifying stages of concentration followed by systematic] contemplation, the Buddha saw the dharma. Therefore, it is said that the Buddha is the Buddha, the "Enlightened One."
For enlightenment is knowing the dharma. The dharma is the truth about the world. Seeing this, the former prince, the wandering ascetic Siddhartha Gautama is called "the Buddha."
The Dharma (the Teaching about the path to the ultimate truth) is that which allows other people to become a buddha, "one-who-knows," one who knows the dharma directly.
The Dharma (the Teaching about the path to the ultimate truth) is that which allows other people to become a buddha, "one-who-knows," one who knows the dharma directly.
If beings engage in skillful conduct (spiritually profitable karma) and are loyal to the Buddha-Dharma, the "Teaching of the Buddha," these beings will never be short of virtue (merit) and goodness (the inner impulse to develop the wholesome).
With understanding, we will see that we are really not far from the Buddha; we are sitting face to face with him. When we practice the Dharma, and understand the dharma, then at that moment we will see the Buddha.
If one really practices, one will hear/recall the Buddha-Dharma whether sitting at the root of a tree, lying down or in any posture, walking with mindfulness and clear comprehension.
This is not something to merely "think" about. Realization arises from the pure mind.
Just remembering these words is not enough. Realization depends on seeing the dharma itself, nothing other than this.
Thus, we must determine to practice and practice with determination to be able to see this. Then our practice will really be complete.
Wherever we sit, stand, walk, or lie down, we will recall the Buddha’s Dharma.

Buddhas of Bamiyan, Afghanistan, 1885 |
The ceasefire comes after Muslim clerics in a loya jirga ("grand assembly") meeting in Afghanistan issued a fatwa -- or nonbinding legal opinion on a religious point of Islamic law -- against suicide bombings, after an attack the previous Monday, allegedly claimed by ISIS, killed 14 people who had gathered for a clerics’ peace summit in Kabul.
This comes as the BBC is reporting that the number of bombs dropped by the U.S. Air Force has surged dramatically since President Trump announced his Afghanistan strategy and sent in more troops to the ongoing illegal war last August.
New rules of engagement have made it easier for U.S. forces to kill by carrying out strikes against anyone it deems to be "the Taliban" or a "combatant," even if it is after the fact.

Women's Wisdom: Suppressed Histories

The Suppressed Histories Archive uncovers the realities of women's lives, internationally and over time.
It asks questions about patriarchy [following the father like patricians rather than plebeians, the people] and slavery, conquest and aboriginality.
It examines mother-right, female spheres of power, indigenous philosophies of spirit -- the historical chemistry of repression -- and, more importantly, women's role in resisting oppression.
It examines mother-right, female spheres of power, indigenous philosophies of spirit -- the historical chemistry of repression -- and, more importantly, women's role in resisting oppression.
A global perspective on women’s history offers fresh and diverse conceptions of women's power, as well as of men and gender borders. It overturns stereotypes of race and class and the structures of domination that enforce them.
It digs under the usual story of lords and rulers, looking for hidden strands, and reweaves knowledge from the divided fields of history, archeology, linguistics, and folk tradition.
Casting a wide net, we look for patterns and gaps and contradictions. Where vested power interests are at stake, these contradictions are trigger points for controversy.
Some of the flashpoints are women's power, neolithic female figurines, gender-egalitarian mother-right cultures, patriarchy, witch-hunts, "heresies" such as goddess veneration and shamanism, and the rise and fall of empires, including the doctrines of supremacy that prop up all systems of domination. The Problem with "Religion" (Alan Watts)
Alan Watts via WDYD (fb); Dhr. Seven, Ashley Wells, CC Liu (eds.), Wisdom Quarterly
(WDYD) Alan Watts, "The New Religion: God is Dead" brought to us by "What do you desire?"
Decolonize mind or the butt will stay stuck. |
This talk by the self-described "spiritual entertainer" Alan Watts is prophetic. He points out how and why the West stopped believing in God and is dying to gain faith.
It's likely the intelligent never did believe, but the rest of us sure had to. There was no choice about it. It was rammed down our throats with the most fearful threats imaginable. And the very people we trusted most were the ones ramming. They had been lied to and turned around and lied to us.
How, for instance, can we as Americans choose to live in a republic if we actually believed the universe were governed as a dictatorial monarchy?
- [Perhaps that's why Republicans prefer neo-fascist dictatorships and distrust Christian monarchies -- or at least that's the way it seems under Trump and the Bushes before him -- and why we liberals like monarchies but prefer democratic-socialism. Do Catholics distrust dictatorships because they know monarchies first hand and would rather rule themselves through some fairer process in which they have some say? Buddhists will say, "Let's move on to something that's intellectually respectable and doesn't insult our intelligence."]
Watts proposes an alternative solution: Let's have a secularization of religion, getting rid of a great omnipotent creator "God" -- respectfully -- as proposed by some theologians and philosophers throughout history.

"DENIAL" Jewish Extermination Story (audio)

Written by: Peter Sagal. Directed by: Jenny Sullivan. Starring: David Clennon, Tim DeKay, Harold Gould, John Randolph, Kimberly Scott, Stephanie Zimbalist. Original air date: July 26, 2019.
DENIAL
In Peter Sagal’s contest of intellect and wills, Abby Gersten, a tenacious civil liberties attorney, defends a right-wing an impartial independent scholar and Holocaust Extermination Story denier, arguing her case against a young, committed Jewish federal prosecutor. But Gersten may have to sacrifice everything to prove that Truth and Justice do not always go hand in hand. Recorded before a live audience at the Skirball Cultural Center, Los Angeles in July of 1999.
Researcher Eric Dubay (atlanteanconspiracy.com) denies the common propagandistic extermination story, and he has proof. But he's CENSORED by YouTube, so we're BANNED from watching, questioning, and deciding for ourselves based on objective facts and evidence. Nowadays our thinking is done for us. In Dubay's place here is PM Benyamin Netanyahu, the CIA-groomed leader placed at the head of Israel to serve the CIA, Zionism, statehood, Islamophobia, and an imperial plan manipulate the Middle East cooked up by British colonialists.

The Nova Effect: The Tragedy of Good Luck
A short fictionalized story of an ancient Asian account of a farmer's son being thrown from a horse and breaking his leg -- good news or can anyone really ever know what "good" is until subsequent things happen or are kept from happening. This story is about a series of unpleasant events that cause the sudden appearance of intense change in a person's life for the better. How could good come from bad?
