Be natural (Ajahn Chah)

Ajahn Chah (ajahnchah.org) via Ven. Sujato, Ellie Askew, Dhr. Seven (ed.), Wisdom Quarterly

It doesn't matter what others do. My action does.
We must examine ourselves. Know who we are. Know our body and mind by simply watching. In sitting, in sleeping, in eating, know our limits. Use wisdom.

The practice is not to try to achieve anything. Just be mindful of what is. Our whole meditation is looking directly at the mind. We will see suffering, its cause and its end. But we must have patience, much patience and endurance. Gradually we will learn.

The Buddha taught his disciples to stay with their teachers for at least five years. We must learn the values of giving, of patience, and of dedication.

I'm a Buddhist, and I still celebrate X-mas.
Don't practice too strictly. Don't get caught up in outward form. Watching others is bad practice.

Simply be natural and watch that. Our monastic discipline and monastic rules are very important. They create a simple and harmonious environment. Use them well. But remember, the essence of the discipline is watching intention, examining the mind.

We must have wisdom. Don't discriminate. Would anyone get upset at a small tree in the forest for not being tall and straight like some of the others? This would be silly.

Don't judge other people. There are all varieties. No need to carry the burden of wishing to change them all.

Bangladeshi Buddhists on Vesak, LA (video)

Bangladeshi Buddhist Martina Barua, Ellie Askew, Dhr. Seven, Saul S. (eds.), Wisdom Quarterly

Happy Buddha's Birthday!
Today is Vesak (Buddha Purnima 2021), and I [Martina Barua, 19] am delighted to participate in this sacred celebration organized by the Los Angeles Buddha Vihara, representing Barua Buddhists from Bangladesh.
Honored guests, Dharma speakers, holy monastic community (Sangha), and devotees, I would like to share some important information about the great enlightenment that made Prince Siddhartha the Buddha.

Before Siddhartha became supremely enlightened, he was a [Scythian, Saka, Central Asian] prince who realized the impermanence and disappointment of life, how living beings die with their desires unsatisfied only to be reborn again according to their karma.

There are very few of us remaining.
All beings are caught in the same round of existence due to ignorance, greed [lust, craving for sensual pleasures], and anger/aversion.

The Buddha realized the causes of unskillful karma (actions, behavior, deeds) and suffering (the result of our karma), aging (wearing away, falling apart), and death (passing away only to be reborn) and how to be released.

The Buddha experienced a great awakening (maha-bodhi) because he understood how to be liberated from suffering, sorrow, unhappiness, aging, and death. He became the Buddha, the "Awakened One," on the full moon of the month of Vesak (Vesakha).

The Buddha began his teaching of the Dharma by Turning the Wheel of Truth, a discourse he gave to five wandering ascetics he had come to know while striving for enlightenment. In it he taught humans and devas the path to attain liberation, such as:
  • The Four Noble Truths
  • The Noble Eightfold Path
  • the principle of causality (karma)
  • Dependent Origination
  • emptiness (selflessness)
  • The Ten Perfections
  • The Middle Way
That is my main point really.
The Buddha, who lived to the age of 80, taught for 45 years -- always wisely, patiently, compassionately, and never in anger. He perfectly lived up to his Teachings, this Dharma (Doctrine and Discipline),

Having been reborn in the human world, having reaching supreme enlightenment, he passed into final-nirvana (parinibbana) -- all three events taking place on the full moon of this month.

His chief disciples, such as Maha Kassapa and Ananda, collected the teaching and established an oral tradition of studying, practicing, memorizing (chanting), reciting, and spreading the light of the world, this Dharma, in all directions for the benefit of all living beings.

Beavis, Butthead, and Idiocracy (video)

WTF happened to IDIOCRACY?
(JoBlo Videos) "WTF happened to this movie?" is the JoBlo series that looks at troubled productions, curious creative decisions, box office failures, surprising successes, and cult favorites!

Mike Judge found massive success with his "Beavis and Butt-Head" TV series, but the transition to live-action proved far more difficult.

After the box office failure of OFFICE SPACE in 1999, Judge's next effort IDIOCRACY fared even worse in 2006, with the studio practically burying his movie.

But in the years since, the social satire found a cult following and became part of the pop culture landscape with its depiction of our moronic future. Mutilate thirst and find out WTF happened. More movie news: joblo.com.

Considering becoming a soldier?

Einherjar with wolf served by Valkyries in Valhalla as Odin sits on throne (Emil Doepler).
.
Expecting Valhalla and glory? No.
(SN 42.3) Yodhajiva the chief went to the Buddha, paid his respects, sat to one side, and said: "Venerable sir, I have heard this passed down by the warriors' ancient teaching lineage:

"'When a warrior strives and exerts in battle, if others strike one down and slay a warrior in battle, then with the breakup of the body, after death, that person is reborn in the company of devas slain in battle' [in a Valhalla or Buddhist Sārañjita*]. What does the Blessed One have to say about that?"

"Enough, chief, set that question aside. Ask me not that." But a second and third time Yodhajiva the chief asked.

Return to Valhalla (Ernest Wallcousins, 1912)
"Apparently, chief, I have not been able to get past you by saying, 'Enough, chief, set that question aside. Ask me not that.' So I will answer plainly.

"When a warrior strives and exerts in battle, that person's mind (heart) is already seized, debased, and misdirected with the thought, 'May these beings be struck down, slaughtered, destroyed, annihilated. May they cease to exist!'

"If others strike and slay that person in battle, then with the breakup of the body, after death, that person is reborn in a hell called the realm of those slain in battle. Moreover, if that person holds a view [such as the one you described], that is wrong view.

Valkyries carry dead warrior to Valhalla as they pass the god Heimdallr (Lorenz Frølich 1906).
.
"There are two destinations for a person possessed of wrong view, I tell you, either [rebirth in a] hell or in an animal's womb."

When this was said, Yodhajiva the chief burst into tears and sobbed.

"That is what I could not get past you by saying, 'Enough, chief, set that question aside. Ask me not that.'"

"Venerable sir, I am not crying because of what the Blessed One said, but rather because I have been fooled, cheated, and deceived for so long by that ancient teaching lineage of warriors who said such a thing."

WAR POEM: Dulce et decorum est

Manuscript variant (ox.ac.uk)
This poem was written by Wilfred Owen during WWI. He was later killed in battle, and it was published posthumously in 1920. The title is Latin and taken from Ode 3.2 (Valor) of the Roman poet Horace. Dulce et decorum est means "it is sweet and fitting" followed by pro patria mori, which means "to die for one's country." One of Owen's most renowned works, it is characterized by horror as a condemnation of war. Drafted at Craiglockhart addressed Oct. 8, 2017 to his mother, Susan Owen, and later revised, likely at Scarborough but possibly Ripon.

POEM
Bent double, like old beggars under sacks,
Knock-kneed, coughing like hags, we cursed through sludge,
Till on the haunting flares we turned our backs,
And towards our distant rest began to trudge.
Men marched asleep. Many had lost their boots,
But limped on, blood-shod. All went lame, all blind;
Drunk with fatigue; deaf even to the hoots
Of gas-shells dropping softly behind.

Gas! GAS! Quick, boys!—An ecstasy of fumbling
Fitting the clumsy helmets just in time,
But someone still was yelling out and stumbling
And flound'ring like a man in fire or lime.—
Dim through the misty panes and thick green light,
As under a green sea, I saw him drowning.

In all my dreams before my helpless sight
He plunges at me, guttering, choking, drowning.

If in some smothering dreams, you too could pace
Behind the wagon that we flung him in,
And watch the white eyes writhing in his face,
His hanging face, like a devil's sick of sin,
If you could hear, at every jolt, the blood
Come gargling from the froth-corrupted lungs,
Obscene as cancer,
Bitter [bitten] as the cud
Of vile, incurable sores on innocent tongues,–
My friend, you would not tell with such high zest
To children ardent for some desperate glory,
  • *Sarājita: A niraya (one of the apayas) in which those who die in battle are reborn (S.iv.311). The Commentary to this sutra (SA.iii.100) explains that it is a purgatory rather than a distinctive plane of existence, a part of Avīci, the "Waveless Deep," the most hellish world. Sarajita is where fighters of all sorts fight on in their imagination. Compare with Sarañjita (G. P. Malalasekera, Dictionary of Pali Proper Names edited by Wisdom Quarterly).
  • The idea of "Valhalla" or Valhǫll is strangely similar to the Eastern conception of the lower celestial ruler Sakka King of the Gods (devas). He is a peaceful warrior having to constantly fend off the titans (asuras), who rage on as antagonists in the "War in Heaven." There is not one heaven in Buddhism but many. These levels or planes of existence are progressively more refined and longer lasting. Sakka rules the World of the Thirty-Three and oversees the Realm of the Four Great Kings or sky-kings, regents, just above the human world. This human plane of existence extends far beyond earth and the worlds we know.
  • "HELL"? Buddhism teaches that on account of the universality of impermanence, a life in a hell, just as one in a heaven, cannot last eternally. So they are more like purgatories. It ends after the exhaustion of the karma that caused that rebirth. It will necessarily be followed again by another death and another rebirth, according to one's other stored up karma (deeds, merit, demerit, intentional actions, conduct, behavior). Hellions have a very hard time that may as well be an eternity but, of course, they are not literally one.

Losing comic TV actor Gavin MacLeod (video)

All of samsara is marred by Death.
Why do living beings keep passing away? When will we get a respite from Death (Mara)? Only nirvana, the Deathless (the amata or amrita of ancient India and ambrosia of ancient Greece), is that restful peace. Why do the shining stars keep falling from the sky? Happy! Not Murray! Captain Stubing, why Murray Slaughter? He was such a good copywriter! Just ask mother Mary Moore.

When will Death stop? When will time grow still? In dying there is always rebirth; in being born, there is always Death. Knowing this, who would not wish for an end to the ceaseless cycle of samsara?

The Sensual are Surprised by Death (Dhp)

What, huh? I wasn't staring at them! Look, I'm just tanning, and I'm not an "ugly American"!
.
Are you serious, you old buzzard?
The Dhammapada (Dhp) is the footprint, imprint, or path of the Dharma (Dhamma in the Pali language the Buddha spoke).

It is an assortment of sayings on many topics divided into chapters by subject matter, first the Pali, then the translation, then the backstory.

4. Pupphani h'eva pacinantam byasattamanasam naram Suttam gamam mahogho'va maccu adaya gacchati.

47. DEATH TAKES THE SENSUAL BY SURPRISE
4. The person who gathers flowers [of sensual pleasure and delight], whose mind is distracted, Death carries off just as a great flood sweeps away a sleeping village.

47. STORY
Hey, that's a nice longboard! - This? - YES!
Provoked by a disparaging remark, King Vidudabha wreaked vengeance on the Sakyas [Scythians, Sakas], the Buddha's extended family, by slaughtering them wholesale.

On his return journey the king camped with his followers on the dry, flat bed of a river. At night an unexpected flood swept them all to the sea.

Hearing of their tragic end, the Buddha remarked that people come to ruin without accomplishing their objectives.

5. Pupphani h'eva pacinantam byasattamanasam naram Atittam yeva kamesu antako kurute vasam.

48. THE SENSUAL DIE WITH DESIRES UNGRATIFIED
I'm not going to let this happen to me.
5. The person who gathers flowers [of sensual pleasure and delight], whose mind is distracted, and who is insatiate in desires, the Destroyer [11] brings under its sway.

48. STORY
A woman offered alms to the monastics in the morning and died in the evening of that same day. When this pathetic incident was reported to the Buddha, he spoke on the fleeting nature of life and added that humans succumb to death with their desires not yet satiated.

Laughter Yoga session with Bianca Spears

Laugh with me: Laughter Yoga session
(Bianca Spears) Quick laughter session to get everyone feeling amazing and improving our health at any time of the day or night.

(Family Guy) A bad yoga teacher is a wonder. WARNING: Poop sounds!

This is stupid. I don't know why I'm laughing.
EXPLANATION
: How can anyone force laughter? Are we watching a stand-up comic kill it? No, it's not necessary. Laughter is social, natural, and contagious! It really is. Nothing needs to be "funny." It's like yawning or barfing when we don't need to. Others do, so we do.

Hi, I'm jolly Budai.
Nature has rigged us to follow others' cues in such things. (With regard to puking, if someone is coughing up a meal, everyone better stop eating it. It just makes evolutionary sense. As to why we yawn when others do, perhaps it's to get more air or to nonverbally indicate that it's time for the tribe to sleep). Laughter is almost entirely social.

We'll prove it. Watch something funny without a laugh track. Dud. Watch a comedian's act first without a laughing crowd then with one. You've already heard all of these jokes. What are you laughing at the second time? Being manipulated to laugh may be a terrible thing.

But once the laughter starts, it almost doesn't matter what we're laughing at. It's bonding the group, even if the group is just a crowd of strangers, the 10:00 pm crowd at the Improv. We are all nonverbally communicating that something is or is not funny, taboos, ethics, social guidelines, violations, and a million other small things.

Can Laughter, Yoga, or Laughter Yoga help me?

Seth MacFarlane (Family Guy); Liliana DeLeo (TEDx MontrealWomen); Editors, Wisdom Quarterly

I want to meditate. But I can't. Help! I've heard that yoga and the eight parts of yoga can help. But that's hard. I've also heard that there's a Laughter Yoga. That sounds easy. I love to laugh. So I was thinking, what if I watch cartoons about yoga and laugh? Is that Laughter Yoga? Can it help my meditation and put me into a "Zen" (jhana, dhyana, chan) state?
Let's try Laughter Yoga: Once you laugh, you'll laugh

Scientists teach bacteria to read

Scientists just added two functional letters to genetic code (Science, AAAS, sciencemag.org)

Scientists teach E. coli bacteria colonies to recognize letters
These colonies of organism can do much.
The lab has previously engineered biological sensors capable of recognizing the presence of arsenic and other poisons in water, or the presence of blood in urine.

A team of scientists from the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology in Haifa, Israel, has taught colonies of Escherichia coli (E. coli) bacteria to recognize and respond to certain geometric patterns, such as letters.

The study was led by Dr. Ximing Li and Assistant Professor Ramez Daniel. It was published earlier this week in the scientific journal Nature Communications.

What is "consciousness," and what is its source?
Prof. Daniel's lab works in the field of synthetic biology, specifically in the generation of biological circuits in essence creating living computers, or very primitive brains.

The lab utilizes a known scientific phenomenon called "quorum sensing." Colonies of certain microbes are naturally capable of communicating within the colony and microbes can respond differently when alone, as opposed to times when they are in a colony.

This phenomenon can be seen occurring naturally within our own bodies, every time an infection causes multiple cell types within our immune system to react to protect the organism.

By engineering cells to perform certain function types, one can cause individual cells to be turned on and off and perform a function, for example, fluorescence.

What is "consciousness"? How can we find out from the inside out? (awareproject.org)
.
Using this technique, the lab has previously engineered biological sensors capable of recognizing the presence of arsenic and other poisons in water, or the presence of blood in urine.

By combining their cell engineering skills with the quorum sensing properties of the E. coli bacteria colonies, the scientists were able to, for the first time, create an artificial neural network (ANN) capable of performing the relatively complex task of geometric pattern recognition.

Dr. Ximing Li (right), Assistant Prof. Ramez Daniel (Rami Shlush/Technion)

According to the researchers, the study's results are a proof of concept for what ANNs can do. "For example, the framework and algorithm in our study can be used to facilitate the design of living therapeutics, such as targeted drug release system based on engineered probiotic bacteria system," the researchers said.

"Our proposed system can also be potentially extended to engineer inter-cellular communications in yeasts cells and mammalian cells," the researchers stated.

"For the latter in particular, engineering how tissue cells contact each other would enable new applications for programming tissue development, growth, and repair. More

Vesak Festival celebration: What is it? (BBC)

CBBC Newsround (BBC.co.uk; edited by Wisdom Quarterly, Vesak 2021

Vesak is one of the most important Buddhist festivals. It is also known as Wesak or "Buddha Day."  It is the celebration of the Buddha's birthday and, for Theravada Buddhists, it also marks his enlightenment (when he discovered the meaning of life) and his passing into final nirvana.

It is a time to reflect on the Buddha's Teachings or Dharma and what it means to be Buddhist. Read on to find out more about Buddha and the Vesak festival and the three extraordinary events that took place on it.

Most Buddhists believe in many gods or no god at all rather than a single creator god of monotheistic traditions who created the world and everything in it.

In fact, most Buddhists learn and practice the teachings of a supremely awakened  teacher who began as a human named Prince Siddhartha Gautama, who became the Buddha.

Siddhartha Gautama is believed to have been a prince born into a wealthy family in what is now called Central Asia (ancient Gandhara) in the 5th century BCE. It's believed that Prince Siddhartha renounced the world when he realized that wealth and luxury did not bring secure happiness.

He travelled as a wandering ascetic on a spiritual quest to discover the the meaning of life and the world. His mission was to find the cause and end of suffering.

It's believed that after six years of renunciation, study, useless austerities, and meditation during his wandering, he became spiritually awakened and reached his goal of finding meaning in life, the cause of suffering, and how to bring about the end of all suffering. This is called bodhi or enlightenment.

At this moment, he became the Buddha, the "Enlightened One," and for 45 years taught humans and devas the path to liberation.

Buddha is a title, rather than a name, which means supremely enlightened one or fully awakened one.

When is Vesak? Vesak is celebrated at the full moon of the month of Vesakha. This year, it falls on May 27th in the Western hemisphere. The date changes each year as it take places at the time of the first full moon of the ancient lunar month of Vesakha, which usually falls in April or May sometimes even June.

How is Vesak celebrated? Each Buddhist culture has its own traditions for this triply blessed day. It is celebrated in many countries across Asia, including: Thailand, Burma, Sri Lanka, India, China, Nepal, Bhutan, Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, Japan, and North and South Korea.

Many Buddhists will visit their local temple or monastery and some might even stay there throughout the day and night of the full moon, as is the custom for the full moon lunar observance of uposatha.

Many will perform good deeds, take part in study, chanting, hearing the Dharma, and meditation. They reflect on Buddhist teachings, and more importantly put them into practice, bring offerings, and share food with people, and prepare offerings for the support of the Sangha or monastic community.

Families may decorate their homes with lanterns, take part in processions, and wear special white clothes to mark the occasion. Friends and family may also send cards to each other.

A ceremony called Bathing the the Baby Buddha may also be held, when water is poured over the shoulders of Prince Siddhartha at birth, when it is said sky devas caused a spontaneous rain to wash him. Doing so also reminds people to cleanse their minds, hearts, and bodies of negativity like greed, hatred, and delusion. More + VIDEO

Buddhist Xmas: VESAK, May Full Moon (2021)

Dhr. Seven, Ashley Wells, Ananda (Dharma Buddhist Meditation), Wisdom Quarterly
The Buddha is a buddha because of a special enlightenment called samma-sam-bodhi.

.
The 2021 Vesak is a full blood-red super moon.
VESAK refers to the name of an ancient month in proto-India, a month when 26 centuries ago three very special things happened.

The word signifies those three things: the birthday, great awakening, and passing into final nirvana of Prince Siddhartha Gautama who later became the Buddha, "The Enlightened One."

The famous "photo" of the Buddha...is Italian art.
Every month (moonth, lunation) has four weekly lunar phases, and on each of these observant Buddhists take up the Eight Precepts for 24 hours.

They visit Buddhist temples, meditation centers, nunneries, or monasteries (viharas) to meditate, chant or listen to the Buddha's teaching, called the Dharma, and put it into practice.

This "sabbath" day -- which originated long before the Abrahamic faiths Judaism, Christianity, and Islam -- is called the uposatha.

In all the worlds in 10,000 directions there are no better beings than supremely-enlightened ones.
.
One such uposatha a year is the most special of all. It is so big that it is playfully referred to as "Buddhist Xmas." It's the largest Buddhist celebration of the year. Happy Vesak, May 26, 2021!
  • Wesak (Merriam-Webster Dictionary): The Buddhist New Year festival celebrating the birthday [mahabodhi and parinirvana] of the Buddha at the May full moon.
