International Women's Day 2010

International Women's Day
International Women's Day
The first IWD was in 1911. It followed unanimous agreement at an International Conference of Working Women the previous year. Clara Zetkin proposed that every year in every country there should be a unified day when women's solidarity presses for equality. More>>

Today's women are brought together less by feminism while sharing a more similar situation. As their children, friends, and partners, we are the sum total of women's condition. That is, what happens to women happens to us all. For example, their treatment in Buddhism mirrors their treatment in society.

Great strides are being made in the West, but this follows a great decline for women in the East. One way to improve human society is to improve the condition of women in all spheres -- spiritual, social, material. India is coming to parity with Scandinavian standards of equality in the political realm. Yet we in the US still have a way to go.

The Day in Pictures
IWD may be a day of global celebration, but there is no room for complacency. Women continue to face inequity on many fronts. How does IWD looks around the globe? Share IWD pictures, stories.
