How "Orthodox Christmas" is celebrated around the world
(BBC News) Hundreds of millions of people are celebrating Christmas Eve and Day, as Orthodox Christians believe Jesus Christ was born on January 7th. Dozens of countries -- from Egypt to Ethiopia, and Russia to Ukraine -- have been engaging in festive traditions unknown to many around the world.

The Orthodox faith goes by the Julian calendar, while the other major Christian denominations (such as the Catholic and Protestant) follow the manipulated Gregorian calendar.

Russian President [and ailing Dictator] Vladimir Putin on Thursday ordered Moscow's armed forces to hold a 36-hour cease-fire in Ukraine this weekend for the Russian Orthodox Christmas holiday, the Kremlin said. The Kremlin said the order, which was quickly dismissed by Ukraine, was in response to a proposal by the head of the Russian Orthodox Church, Patriarch [Pope] Kirill, earlier in the day, which was also dismissed by an official in the Ukrainian presidential office as propaganda.
