RIP: Dolores Huerta, 96; Patrick Stewart, 86

Dolores Huerta, Cesar Chavez launch NY boycott
Dolores Huerta has passed at 96. She was a formidable champion of social justice, American labor leader striving for farm workers' rights, and a feminist activist.

After working for years with the Community Service Organization (CSO), she co-founded the National Farm Workers Association (NFWA).

Cesar Chavez (United Farm Workers)
She did this with fellow activists troubled Cesar Chavez (who molested and fathered two children with her) and Gilbert Padilla, which eventually merged with the Agricultural Workers Organizing Committee (AWOC) to become the United Farm Workers (UFW).

Huerta joined Filipino leader Larry Itliong in the Delano Grape Strike in 1965, managing boycott campaigns on the east coast and negotiating with the grape companies to end the strike.

"Yes, it can be done!" (Si, se puede!)
Some credit her with the UFW slogan sí, se puede ("yes, we can," lit. "yes, it's possible" or "yes, it's possible") [a]. More

English translation: Sí se puede, credited to Dolores Huerta and successfully used by the UFW and Obama campaign, is usually translated from Spanish into English as, "It can be done" or "Yes, you can," but a more literal translation that the United Farm Workers uses is "Yes, it can be done!" More
