Emails linked to Jeffrey Epstein reference potential meetings and events, prompting intense scrutiny online. The Dalai Lama’s office (dalailama.com) has issued a firm denial, saying he never met or authorized contact with Epstein [though the files seem to suggest a visit to Pedophile Island was at least planned]. As questions swirl, this breakdown explains what the files show, and what they do not.

• known to be a confirmed CIA asset (Los Angeles Times) in league with and on the payroll of The Company, accepting money as well as arms and military training received by his brother in the state of Colorado in the U.S.'s covert fight against communist China, which invaded, occupied, and destroyed a small but influential Buddhist country and former Himalayan empire based in Lhasa,
• lauded by Hollywood with a Grammy for his album,
• a good personal friend of President George W. Bush,

Did Dalai Lama just ruin Tibetan Buddhism, or did he make Tantra more attractive to Western pedophiles?

There's an amusing anti-Dalai Lama sect of Buddhism in Los Angeles. It seems impossible. Could anyone not love the puppy eyes and playful laugh of the Laughing Monk, the 14th Dalai Lama Tenzin Gyatso?

Yes, lots. The New Kadampa Tradition (NKT) movement is not mad at him lately from the States. It's mad at him from old Tibet and it's been going on a while. See the Dorje Shugden controversy.

As the "pope" of at least one sect of Vajrayana Buddhism, the Dalai Lama has incurred the anger of the other colored hats in Tibet/China. The Dalai Lama blames them for worship of an entity, the result of which was invasion by China and the loss of His throne as "pope-king," the spiritual and temporal leader of the massive former Tibetan Empire (the land area of which amounts to 25% of modern China).

What they do is very bad. Suck my tongue, Boy.

The NKT founder, His Holiness Kelsang Gyatso (1931-2022), was a nice monk we got to see, whom followers are sure was fully enlightened and for decades never got angry. They deny anything they did or anything (Dorje Shugden) they worshiped brought on the Chinese onslaught and loss of Tibet as a sovereign nation.

The NKT used to have a nice nunnery/monastery near Dodger Stadium, which is in Chavez Ravine to the west of DTLA, close to Glassell Park. They have their main center in Hollywood on Franklin. But there may now be a satellite temple in Pasadena, Santa Monica, and Catalina Island.

• One criticism we have of this feelgood sect (possible "cult") in Los Angeles is its capitalist (spiritual materialism) inclination with its tendency to angle its message as if spirituality were an ordinary Western consumer item to buy.

Meeting well-wishers during a royal visit to Birkenhead in Merseyside, England, on January 14, 2019, Britain’s Prince Harry reportedly shared with 69-year-old Buddhist lama Kelsang Sonam that he meditates every day.

Following their conversation, Kelsang Sonam presented the prince a copy of the book Eight Steps to Happiness: The Buddhist Way of Loving Kindness by the Tibetan [renegade anti-Dalai Lama separatist Vajrayana] Dharma teacher Kelsang Gyatso.

Prince Harry and his wife, American former actress and humanitarian [Princess] Meghan Markle, visited a community café and supermarket called Number 7 selling discounted food for low-income families, operated by Feeding Birkenhead, a coalition of organizations “working together to eliminate hunger” in the local community.

During the visit, the couple had the chance to sit with some of the organization’s staff and customers, which is when the prince and Kelsang Sonam spoke.

NKT is doing an ancient Tibetan practice which the Dalai Lama has prohibited, claiming it can lead to physical and mental harm [and is alleged the cause of China's invasion and occupation of Tibet]. The Four Foundations or Fourfold Setting Up of Mindfulness

[See PART 1] The Four "Foundations of Mindfulness" (lit., "awareness of mindfulness," sati-upatthāna), are systematic contemplations of:

1. body (form, materiality)
2. feeling (sensation)
3. mind (mentality)
4. mind-objects.

1st human depictions of the Buddha: Gandhara

For sati ("mindfulness, wakefulness, vigilance, bare-awareness [free of evaluation and reactivity]," figuratively, striving-for-insight-into).

Two sutras give a detailed treatment of this subject, so important for the practice of Buddhist meditation/mental cultivation. The two Satipatthāna Sutras (DN 22 and MN 10) proclaim these weighty words as they begin and again when they close:

"The one and only way [or the direct way] that leads to the attainment of purity [of view], to the overcoming of sorrow and lamentation, to the end of pain and grief, to the entering of the right path, and to the realization of nirvana is the Four Foundations of Mindfulness."

After these ominous introductory words, aasking the question, "What are these four?," it is said that the meditator dwells in contemplation of the body, feelings [sensations], the mind, and mind-objects "ardent, clearly conscious and mindful, after setting aside worldly greed and grief."

Bliss becomes joy.

These four systematic contemplations, in reality, are not taken merely as separate exercises. On the contrary, in many cases, particularly for arriving at the blissful meditative absorptions (jhanas), the four are inseparably associated with one another.

Meditation is the greatest thing!

So the Satipathāna Sutra forms an illustration of the way these four contemplations relate to the Five Aggregates Clung to as Self (khandha) simultaneously come to be realized.

This finally leads to insight and enlightenment (awakening) by directly realizing the impersonal nature of all things and all forms of existence. More

Hundreds of protesting emails demanding retractions and apologies poured in last month after the Observer reported on planned demonstrations in Britain against the Dalai Lama, Tibet’s exiled spiritual leader [and semi-retired political leader].

Coupled with a storm on Twitter and placard-waving near our office in London, it had all the hallmarks of a carefully organized campaign to pressure the paper to kill a story, and all from apparently peace-loving Buddhists.

 

The article alleged that the Chinese authorities were encouraging a “toxic” campaign by the International Shugden Community to undermine the Dalai Lama and which could threaten Buddhism itself.

 

The [rival Tibetan] sect, described as extremist by the International Campaign for Tibet, had disseminated images of the guru as a pig, described him as a Muslim, and compared him to Hitler. 

The story added, without attribution, that the sect believed in an evil spirit that inflicts madness and death on its enemies. It said demonstrations, organized by the Shugden-following New Kadampa Tradition (NKT), were planned when the Dalai Lama arrived at a new Buddhist center in Hampshire and at the Glastonbury festival. NKT declined to comment.

  

Shugden followers wrote to deny that they were extremist, that they had any links with the Chinese, or that their campaign was aimed at splitting Buddhism. They denied that NKT was organizing the protests, and they rejected entirely the idea that they believed in an evil spirit.

They maintained that the “false” Dalai Lama, as they called him, was himself a follower of Shugden teachings until 1976 but was now banning the practice and suppressing human rights.

  

“The net effect of your biased and harmful accusations is to abuse and alienate innocent Shugden Buddhists,” wrote one emailer.

“Instead, why don’t you honestly assess the claims of Shugden Buddhists?”

So I turned to an acknowledged authority, Professor Robert Barnett, director of modern Tibetan studies at Columbia University (USA).

 

“Their campaign depends on the implication that a ban by the Dalai Lama on Shugden practice exists throughout the Tibetan Buddhist community,” he said. “There is no ban in that broad sense, though some Tibetan organizations are said to have at certain times imposed such bans on their own members, which is indeed a matter of concern.

But the Dalai Lama did issue a [Shugden] prohibition to those who ask to take religious teachings with him. This could be loosely termed a ban, but it was a requirement that applied only to those people who ask to study religious texts with him. The ISC literature does not acknowledge this distinction.”

Discriminatory statements by some in the exile Tibetan administration had not helped and he believed the Dalai Lama should have done more to clarify that Shugden worshippers should not be discriminated against. “But, regrettably, the Shugden campaign has tended to elide and confuse those questions and to focus on political, personal and sectarian issues which are extraordinarily provocative and incendiary.” All this had closed off most avenues for reasonable discussion.

 

There was no firm evidence, he said, of Chinese funding or involvement in Shugden protests organized in the west, but there was very strong evidence of significant Chinese involvement in Shugden organizations in India and Tibet. “NKT and its sister groups have formally linked themselves to those exile groups in India at times, including at least one joint statement and campaign. Leaders of the exile Shugden groups in India frequently travel to China and have formal receptions with Chinese officials, in which they make public statements.”

 

But more significant, he felt, was the fact that Shugden groups in the west expressed the same core views as the Chinese authorities and used the same specific strategy, and often the same terminology, notably the decision to focus their campaigns on attacking the Dalai Lama and describing him as “false”. He believed that a convergence of strategic objectives and methods was evident.

 

It was not, however, correct to say that Shugden followers in the west believed in an evil spirit. More

Fellow Nobel laureates and a parade of celebrities helped kick off a three-day celebration to mark the 80th birthday celebration of the 14th Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso, on Sunday at the Honda Center.

 

Addressing about 18,000 people in the packed stadium, amid calls of “We love you, Dalai Lama,” the exiled Tibetan leader sent out a ringing message of optimism, saying he hopes to see a more peaceful world in his lifetime.

 

But, he added, achieving world peace is not easy.

 

“I’ve had challenges throughout my life,” the monk said. “But the one thing I learned, through everything, is to remain truthful and determined.”

The nearly three-hour event featured a parade of celebrities including comedian George Lopez, rapper MC Hammer, and television actors Josh Radnor and Wilmer Valderrama.

 

Shirin Ebadi, the 2003 Nobel laureate, lawyer, and human rights activist from Iran, said she learned from the Dalai Lama to fight for her rights without anger or hatred.

 

“Whenever I get tired and lose hope, I remember how you have fought for 60 years for the people of Tibet without getting tired or losing hope,” she said.

Jody Williams, who was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1997 for her work to ban landmines, said the Dalai Lama has inspired millions with his message of kindness and nonviolence.

  

“He always says he is just a simple Buddhist monk,” she said. “But he is the most rocking, compassionate simple Buddhist monk I know.”

 

During the program, the Dalai Lama seemed his usual cheerful self. He touched foreheads with several guests including young children who sang and danced for him -- a gesture of endearing closeness in Tibetan tradition.

As thousands sang the birthday song, he blew out a candle on an 8-foot golden birthday cake crafted by instructors and students at The Art Institute of California in Santa Ana.

 

For his birthday, the Dalai Lama did not ask for any “physical gifts,” said Lama Tenzin Dhonden, founder of the Friends of the Dalai Lama.

 

“If we can help to create a more compassionate, kind planet, that would be the most beautiful gift of all,” he said, breaking down in tears during his tribute.

  

But it was not all love and accolades for the Dalai Lama.

About 300 Shugden Buddhist protesters stood in the parking lot shouting and holding signs saying “False Dalai Lama, stop lying.”

 

The group says the Dalai Lama denounced a deity revered by the group, causing rifts between families and ostracizing Shugden followers from the mainstream Tibetan community.

 

“He’s not practicing what he is preaching,” said Angie Kane, a spokeswoman. “What we want is to be able to practice our religion freely.”

 

The Tibetan Association of Southern California issued a statement saying it does not support what it called the protesters’ “defamatory” claims.

 

"Look, China, I'm a demon."

The Dalai Lama also continues to be accused by the Chinese government of trying to split Tibet from the rest of China. During his speech, the Dalai Lama said a Chinese official once called him “a demon.”

“So I said, ‘Yes, I’m a demon,’” he said, laughing, making a gesture of horns over his head, as guests and the audience burst out laughing.

 

He told the large gathering that he deals with criticism in a calm manner.

 

Though the Dalai Lama in 2011 delegated his political responsibilities to a prime minister elected by Tibetan exiles, he still remains the leader of the 6 million Tibetans worldwide.
