High in Scotland: 'Trainspotting' turns 30

What do you for fun around here? Drugs?
Trainspotting
is a 1996 British black comedy drama film directed by Danny Boyle, starring Ewan McGregor, Ewen Bremner, Jonny Lee Miller, Kevin McKidd, Robert Carlyle, and Kelly Macdonald in her film debut. It is written in English and Scots [3]. Based on the 1993 novel by Irvine Welsh, the film was released in the United Kingdom on Feb. 23, 1996 [6].

The film follows a group of heroin addicts in an economically depressed area of Edinburgh, Scotland, and their passage through life. Beyond drug addiction, other themes in the film include an exploration of urban poverty and squalor in Edinburgh [7]. Trainspotting was released to critical acclaim and is today regarded by many critics as one of the best films of the 1990s.... More

A Man's World? Polyandry in Shangri-La

One queen with many kings?
Tibet Travel (Tibet Vista) [Guide Jamyang was traveling on the Lost Horizon and] found the lost Shangri-La (Tibetan Shambhala, Western Paradise Lost), and their secret to happiness seems to be polyandry (multiple husbands for each woman).

POLYANDRY (Ancient Greek πολύ, polú, "many" + ἀνήρ, anḗr, "man") is a form of polygamy in which a female takes two or more husbands at the same time.

Polyandry is contrasted with polygyny, involving one male and two or more females. If a marriage involves a plural number of "husbands and wives" participants of each gender, then it can be called polygamy [1], group or conjoint marriage [2].
  • Anything he can do, I...
Let's not forget the beautiful practice of polyamory for those who can overcome the venoms of envy and jealousy.
In its broadest use, polyandry refers to sexual relations with multiple males within or without marriage.

Of the 1,231 societies listed in the 1980 Ethnographic Atlas,
  • 186 were found to be monogamous,
  • 453 had occasional polygyny,
  • 588 had more frequent polygyny, and
  • 4 had polyandry [3].
Polyandry is more frequent (less rare) than this figure suggests because it considered only those examples found in the Himalayan Buddhist mountain region (8 societies).

Feminine female power!
More recent studies have found at least 4 other societies practicing polyandry [4]. Fraternal polyandry is practiced among Tibetans in Nepal and parts of China, in which two or more brothers are married to the same female (wife), with that wife having equal sexual access to them [5, 6].

It is associated with partible paternity, the cultural belief that a child can have more than one [legal] father [4].

Several ethnic groups practicing polyandry in India identify their customs with their descent from the female Draupadi, a central character of the Mahabharata (revered in Hinduism) who was married to five brothers, although local practices may not be fraternal themselves.

One husband, one wife? - How bad is a good marriage? Be honest, completely honest

Adam's Eve was his "rescuer."
WHY? Polyandry is believed to be more likely in societies with scarce environmental resources. It is believed to limit human population growth and enhance child survival [6, 7]. It is a rare form of marriage that exists among elite and peasant families [8].

For example, polyandry in the predominantly Buddhist Himalayan mountains is related to the scarcity of land. The marriage of all brothers in a family to the same wife allows family land to remain in the same family's hads undivided.

If every brother married separately and had children, family land would be split into unsustainably small plots.

In contrast, very poor persons who do not own land are less likely to practice polyandry in Buddhist India's Ladakh and Zanskar [6].

In Europe, the splitting up of land was prevented through the social practice of impartible inheritance. With most siblings disinherited, many of them became celibate monks and priests [9]. Buddhism seems to have had a better solution, though the vast majority of male and female Tibetan Buddhists at one time or other became Vajrayana monastics at least for some part of their lives. More

Dalai Lama to convert Mother Teresa nuns?

Why doesn't Buddhism push itself on people and nudge and nag them to convert?
(Tsering Dorji) How the Buddha helps us be better Christians: Richard Rohr (complementary)

Buddhist goes Catholic (for love)

Leaving Catholicism even if it has sweet Mary, magic, and miracles
Kwan Yin (Guanyin) Buddhist Goddess of Compassion

Madonna and Child: Siddhartha
In Buddhism we enjoy a "Mother Mary" figure one might call "Virg Yin" (Kwan Yin, Guanyin), the Goddess of Compassion, a bodhisattva. So the best part of the Catholic faith is present. And if a Buddhist wants to love Mary (Miriam) or any other Goddess or her son, that's fine. We do not answer to the Vatican. How great the world would be if everyone were free to pick a spirituality, wisdom, faith, or path-of-practice. We can practice all of them, and that's fine with the Buddha. Good luck on your spiritual journey. We have all been cycling through samsara in search of real "salvation" (liberation, vimutti, moksha). May we all find it.

(But what if a Catholic doesn't like Catholicism, the Patriarchy, and the Church but loves Jesus Christ? - That's great. Investigate what Jesus really taught in the banned Gnostic texts the Church never wants you to know exist.)

God is the Devil, says the Christian Bible

I found every verse that proves God is the Devil so you don’t have to

The older Ethiopian Bible is better than the KJV.
(MorgueOfficial) Premiered Sept. 20, 2025: I’m going to prove that the deity Christians call God is actually the Devil. How? Let's look at PROOF in the Bible itself -- not the cherrypicked verses they spoon feed us on Sunday mornings. I mean the raw, uncut, crazy parts they hope we never open to. And guess what? I’m not the first person to notice. The Gnostics knew it. Some of the first Christians read these very same verses and said, "Yeah, this ‘God’ is totally evil."

Gnostics have been saying it for a long, long time: This 'God' is the devil

World's first Bible reveals God is the Devil!
The God: "Hey, Bich, don't touch that fruit!"
(BIBLE STORY) Sept. 30, 2024: What if everything we thought we knew about God and the Bible is wrong?

This video dives deeply into the ancient Nag Hammadi texts and diverse Gnostic beliefs that the creator of our world isn’t the loving God we’ve been taught to worship but rather the Demiurgea false jealous god (Yaldabaoth?) who seeks to control and keep us in ignorance.

With hidden wisdom and forgotten scriptures, we explore how the Gnostics saw the material world as a prison and the serpent in Eden as a liberator offering forbidden knowledge.

Discover the radical ideas that challenge mainstream religion, revealing that true salvation may rest in breaking free from that Demiurge's control.

From wise Sophia’s role as the guide to enlightenment to the real meaning behind Jesus’ teachings, this video questions everything. Ready to explore the truth that’s been buried for centuries? Hit play and behold!

Junipero Serra statue vandalized at California mission
(KSBY News) Nov. 3, 2017: Junipero Serra statue vandalized at California mission (again). [Why would any Indigenous (American Indian) mind a legacy of rape, ethnic cleansing, erasure, and genocide? Come on! It's American history and the legacy of European invasion, colonization, and Spanish conquest. It's Manifest Destiny. It's the will of God against savages to promote and elevate the White Man who cometh onto these shores to plunder and elevate everything to his liking.]

Irish Latinos: Somos paisanos (comedy)

Irish-Mexican boxing champ 'Cinnamon Barrigan' aka Canelo Alvarez
I'm not Irish. I'm purely Mexican.
Canelo
in Spanish is the masculine form of the word "cinnamon," which is a common nickname for redheads [19].

Jicama con chile (mx.pinterest.com)
In Mexico, it is common for people to associate red hair with the Irish soldiers who fought for Mexico. They were Los Patricios, "Saint Patrick's Battalion," during the Mexican–American War. Speaking about his ancestry, Canelo Álvarez once said, "There might have been an Irish grandfather somewhere back in my past" [18]. Canelo's neighbors nicknamed him "Jícama con Chile," which translates as "white root with red chili flakes" — a popular snack in Mexico and Los Angeles [20]. Rock 'n roll Ireland: Tale of Two Cities

Irish rock stars: 17 music artists from the Emerald Isle known as Ireland | DRGNews

Thin Lizzy's Black Irish Phil Lynott - Thin Lizzy's big Jailbreak album

A Tale of Two Cities | eBay
It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going direct to Heaven, we were all going direct the other way — in short, the period was so far like the present period, that some of its noisiest authorities insisted on its being received, for good or for evil, in the superlative degree of comparison only.
There were a king with a large jaw and a queen with a plain face, on the throne of England; there were a king with a large jaw and a queen with a fair face, on the throne of France. In both countries it was clearer than crystal to the lords of the State preserves of loaves and fishes, that things in general were settled for ever. More
