What "mindfulness" is not

Dhr. Seven, Ananda (Dharma Buddhist Meditation), Wisdom Quarterly

I'm ready. What do I DO?
If we were simply to be aware, that would be good. But we will not stay there because we will naturally go from
what we're aware of to how we relate to it. When we fall into these customary habits of relating, judging, evaluating, measuring, and reckoning, we are far from being mindful. Rather, stay with the object, and don't go anywhere with it. Do not allow it to take us anywhere. Do not wander or wonder, think or figure. Just watch. Just be. And let it be. Keep watching, and nothing more. It will reveal itself. All we need to do is remain present, wakeful, open, radically accepting of what is, and vigilant (in the sense of staying awake for a vigil). Mindfulness is this bare awareness. It is not at all like our ordinary "awareness." But after a time, our ordinary awareness will become this way -- unentangled, undeluded, unswayed, undeceived. The habits of our greed, hatred, and delusion (passion, aversion, and ignorance) will not overtake us. And everything will be perfect just as it is.

At the heart of Buddhist meditation
Heart of Meditation (Nyanaponika+Boorstein)
Nowadays, pop psychologists use and abuse the word "mindfulness" (a handy translation of sati by a Western Theravada Buddhist monk Ven. Nyanaponika Thera, where previously it had been "vigilance" or "wakefulness"), having it mean simply "awareness."

A better translation would be "bare awareness," full wakefulness with detachment, dispassion, non-entanglement in all that is being perceived.

Mindfulness is NOT about thinking, evaluating, judging, measuring, or conjecturing about the field of perception. It is simply being aware of it -- as if for the first time, given that we judge and measure, evaluate and establish preferences the whole rest of the time.
  • [But thinking is good, right? Yes, it's good in waking life. It's good like talking is good. What's better than talking? Listening is better. Listening is about receptivity, whereas talking and thinking are active and attempting to explain what we ourselves do not yet understand. So watch rather than describe, listen rather than talk or forming vrittis (modifications and streams of mind, disturbances of consciousness, vibrations, distortions of clear seeing). To be mindful (full of presence of mind) is not to be thoughtful (full of thought). This will become sati-sampajjana or "watchful and clearly comprehending."]
When we can see in this way, we are free from it, in it, in the midst of it, standing right before it. It is no kind of escapism, but rather being fully with it, letting it be, radically accepting of it, not fixing it, not judging it, not ignoring it, not pushing it away. Instead, we are being with it, not sucked in by it, and seeing its true nature as it reveals itself under our withering watchfulness of it. What is "it"? All that is, all that is going on, all the contents of experience.

The Buddha divided all these contents into four categories of body, feelings, mind, and mind-objects.

How to release spirit attachments (audio)

Brett Farrell (coasttocoast); Pat Macpherson, Dhr. Seven, Wisdom Quarterly

Weighed down by spirit attachments
Nonreligious therapist and "spirit release worker" Brett Farrell appeared on Coast to Coast on Monday, Feb. 25, 2019. He has been working shamanically with the possessed in Australia for over ten years to help them overcome mental illnesses, traumas, addictions, and many other problems.

Behind the world we know through our five senses, there exists a spirit world peopled with non-physical entities. Maybe we can't see them, feel them, or hear them, but sometimes non-physical entities can negatively influence our mental equilibrium and eventually we might start to think that's just the sort of person we are.

Here's a short list of possible symptoms of spiritual attachment:
  • Do you feel as if something is holding you back, sapping your confidence?
  • Is your child's behavior suddenly so bad or bizarre that you feel you have lost your child, that your child is no longer there, that something else has taken over?
  • Is there a part of you that talks you out of doing the things you really want to do?
  • Is there a voice in your head telling you that you are a no good failure?
  • Have you not been the same since an accident, hospitalization, or emotional upset so that you are unable to get going and enjoy life like you used to?
  • Do you suddenly and uncharacteristically feel drawn to alcohol or drugs?
  • Do you get angry in a way you never used to?
  • Do you feel something comes to you at night in bed?
  • Do you have recurring dreams about a dark entity?
  • Has one of your children become uncontrollable or terrified of going to bed or going to school?
  • Dark spirit attachment can be responsible for all of the above symptoms and many more.
The Road Home (Brett Farrell)
Sometimes we know what the problem is. For instance, if we move into a new house and our 5-year-old is suddenly terrified to sleep alone, says there is someone in her/his room, or starts behaving badly.

In that case it's almost certain there is an entity in the house. Children can often see spirits that adults cannot.

He identified "spirit attachments" as powerful forces dominating people's lives and has developed techniques for clearing and removing these harmful entities.

There are a number of entity types, including:
  • spirits of the deceased
  • dark-demonic beings
  • thought-forms conjured up by the negative focus of the living.
Farrell says he can even track these invisible spirit attachments back to their sources. The dark-demonic entities, he explains, are generally part of a hierarchy, and the oldest ones tend to be at the top and can be enormous.

In the case of one lesser dark attachment, he followed its trail back to a huge mountain-sized being. "I actually stood on his chest to talk to him," Farrell said of his encounter with it in the astral realm.

He details how he disposed of that entity by spreading his energy form -- a net of light -- around him then squeezed him down to a ball. He encased it in a steel container then dropped it into the deep "sea of forgetfulness."

Entities are around us all of the time. People need to be aware of them, he cautions. Children are particularly sensitive to their presence. More + AUDIO

Secrets of the Pineal Gland (video)

Spirit Science, May 25, 2018; Crystal Quintero, Ashley Wells, Dhr. Seven, Wisdom Quarterly

Ancient traditions knew of the pineal gland and enshrouded its mysteries in their lore (Patchman Back in Time). They knew that the pineal plays a role in our spiritual development and communication with spirit beings. But with an increasingly toxic world, many people do not know of the innate gifts inherent to an open pineal or third eye (Spirit Science Expansion).

Behind the scenes we’ve been working really hard to get to the place where we can create and share a never-ending stream of videos. We moved into an actual office, and with a small animation team, we’re ready to start cranking out videos. We’re hoping to publish the next Spirit Science episode next Monday, and they should continue to roll out from then on. We’re also excited to be working with Gaia to help share more meaningful content. They’ve offered to share exclusive videos with us to help get the energy rolling, and we were blown away by their library of contents. It’s an honor to be able to share it today. It is the dawn of a golden age.

With tremendous love,

Patchman, Jordan, and the team at Spirit Studios

"How to Clear Your Mind" (Allure Magazine)

Dhr. Seven, Amber Larson, Wisdom Quarterly; Andy Puddicombe (GetSomeHeadspace.com), Brooke Le Poer Trench (Allure.com, Oct. 2013 issue); ilanadonna (video)
Mind racing? Focus on something concrete -- like the sensation of touching something.

"Insider's Guide," p. 142 (Oct. 2013 issue)
The former Buddhist monk Puddicombe cofounded Get Some Headspace and is the author of Get Some Headspace: How Mindfulness Can Change Your Life in Ten Minutes a Day.

Everyone feels overwhelmed at some point... But what is the most profitable way to respond? We can react -- follow patterns dictated by habit, neurosis, or social conditioning. We can also respond purposefully, try a new way of coping, enter upon a mindful solution.

The thing is, we would first have to be aware. And the habit of bare awareness with clear comprehension (sati-sampajaรฑรฑa) is not the habit most of us have been developing. But it is the  good habit the Buddha recommended on the path to enlightenment.

Even on the path to mundane success, mindfulness is useful. There is no such thing as too much mindfulness. In the development of five crucial factors for success in meditation, there can be too much confidence (faith), there can be too much wisdom. One should temper the other. There can be too much energy, there can be too much concentration. These, too, should be balanced, one by the other.

Definition
But the fifth, this sati, which we translate as "mindfulness" (bare awareness, thoughtless awareness, nonjudgmental awareness, vigilance, diligence, wakefulness, nondistractedness, effortless mono-tasking, nonforgetfulness, remembering to remember, childlike presence of mind or beginner's mind, etc.), cannot be overdone.
  • Mindfulness has a separate meaning with which it should not be confused. "Recollection" or active-contemplation is the "memory" or remembering/bringing to mind side of "mindfulness." It is the turning, thinking over, pensively considering or "rotating" a theme in mind. This rotation (ratiocination, cogitation) is the actual meaning of the English word "meditation." The Buddhist word we commonly translate as "meditation" is bhavana, which has the much broader meaning of cultivation, development, or literally "bringing into being." There are three other words that might better be translated as "meditation" in this older English language sense -- janeti (from jhana, getting to "absorption"), kammatthana (field to be cultivated or worked or acted upon, from kamma, karma, one's meditation subject or theme), and anussati (pondering, recollecting, contemplating, from anu = "scrutiny" + sati = "mindfulness," i.e., long consideration or "consideration all the way around"). More
One is aware-and-clear as one goes about one's day, as one sits on a meditation cushion, as one thumbs through Allure and gets to page 142. Mr. Andy Puddicombe explains the rest, showing how just 10 minutes of practice a day can change a life.

(US.Macmillan.com) A former Buddhist monk with over 10 years of teaching experience, Puddicombe has been acknowledged as the UK's foremost mindfulness meditation expert. Like so many of his students, he began his own meditation practice as an ordinary, "busy" person with everyday concerns. He has since designed a program that fits neatly into a jam-packed daily routine proving that just 10 minutes a day can make a world of difference.

Activate your Third Eye (pineal gland)

Dev, Seth Auberon, Dhr. Seven, Amber Larson, Wisdom Quarterly; EpicAsiaTravel.com
Buddha eyes, awakening, Nepal window, Kathmandu (epicasiatravel.com)

If the mystical "third eye" (Buddhist dibba cakkhu, Vedic agna chakra) is the small powerhouse between and just above the eyes -- the largely dormant pineal gland with its light receptors, rods, and cones -- it is going unused.

It is being calcified so as to keep us unaware of our abilities and a transcendent reality all around us.

Nine dharani (Akuppa/flickr.com)
There are ranges along the spectrum of light we should be able to see, as many humans and animals already can. There is a "knowing" accessible to us, which we should be able to access, as many now do. How will we realize our potential.

Meditation, or inner-silence and attentiveness, is a start. It is wise to accompany it with physical activities such as fasting, a proper (low burden) diet, sunshine, fresh air and deep breathing, and detoxing.

MaNithyaSudevi
(MaNithya Sudevi) Balance left- and right-brain thinking. Coloring or writing a story, like playing spontaneous music, brings us into a more vivid and aware state of being, a state of creative awareness.

Golden Buddha, Patan Museum, Nepal
Fluoride -- as toothpaste, municipal water, fluoxetine (a.k.a. Prozac), antiperspirant, deodorant, or a dangerous industrial byproduct and chemtrail ingredient -- is a major culprit in ossifying the pineal gland. Here is a regimen to reawaken potential and prepare for spiritual development. In Buddhism the body does not oppose the mind. Siddhartha's great insight after years of trying to subdue the body was to recognize and harmonize the interdependence of the Five Aggregates ("body" as four elements and "mind" as four processes, composed of transcient kalapas and cittas). The body supports what we do and intend, for good or ill.

What's Your Favorite Meditation?

Text: Holly Lebowitz Rossi (BeliefNet.com, 8/4/09)

I've been a less-than-successful meditator lately, finding myself caught in a session-ending swirl of thoughts every time I've gone to sit quietly for even a few minutes. So I think it's time to kick up my game and find an appropriate meditation CD, download, or even DVD.

Here's the thing: I have a lousy history with such products. The last one I had was a heart meditation that left me gasping for breath. My heart felt like it was going to fly out of my chest. Before that, I tried a chakra-cleansing meditation that got faster and more manic as it moved up the chakra ladder. I was laughing out loud by the end, which was entertaining but not exactly theta-wave inducing.

Other than enjoying my teacher's short, beautiful guided meditations in yoga class, I've always kept my own meditation counsel, until now. It's guidance time. My first stop might be one of the:

I suspect the best course will be to try a few and see which one is the best fit for me. More>>

Negative Feelings: Solution

Tapping.com

The "Emotional Freedom Technique" (EFT) is a simple acupressure technique for releasing negative feelings.

Negative feelings are felt in the body, so one must go to the body to work on or through them.

Negative feelings can be released right now with this video. Tapping can be used to easily clear the chakras (energy centers in the body). This is a very fast, reliable, and easy-to-learn method for clearing chakras inspired by Nicola Quinn.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q: How hard should I tap?
A: Tap lightly, just enough to feel it. The purpose of tapping is to bring attention to different parts of the body. It actually works if one just imagines tapping -- as long as attention is drawn to the right points.

Q: How can I be sure I am finding the right points?
A: Use two fingers to make sure the points are covered. Sometimes the point will "feel" right, as if there were a slight indentation on the skin or the point is particularly sensitive. Since it's all connected, one needn't be 100% accurate.

Q: You've missed points Gary Craig teaches!
A: Yes. Feel free to tap those too. I left them out to keep the videos simple, and it seems to work fine without them. If you find this video doesn't work for you, try tapping the additional points -- around the top-middle of the head and just under the armpit.

Q: Is the sequence important?
A: No. The points can be tapped in any order. In fact, one need only tap one or two of the points for each particular feeling. It's just that one has no easy way of knowing which point that is. So one may as well tap them all.

Q: I am a skeptic! / You are a charlatan!
A: Thanks. Tapping is perfectly explainable scientifically. But it goes beyond most people's understanding. It really does work though. The best way to prove it to yourself is to try it and watch negative feelings disappear.

  • For more information, see introductory video which explains a bit more.
  • This video shows use of an electro-acupuncture pen to show that the tapping points have a different electrical resistance to other parts of the body.
  • See Tapping.com for more Emotional Freedom Technique videos, EFT articles, and E-Book.
