Here’s why no one should listen to Bill Nye the Science Fly about climate change, according to The Jimmy Dore Show (TJDS, jimmydore.com). Is the globe warming? Activists at COP23 decry corporations

Reporting from COP 23 in Bonn, Germany, Democracy Now! ventures to the nearby blockade of the toxic Hambach Mine, the largest open-pit coal mine in Europe. Environmental activists say the mine extracts an extremely dirty form of coal called lignite, "brown coal." It causes the highest CO2 emissions of any kind of coal if burned. For more than five years, these beautiful climate protectors have been fighting to shut down the mine. They want to save the remaining German forest from being cut down to make way for the expanding the toxic capitalist project. Only 10 percent of the ancient forest remains at this time. On Sunday [Nov. 12], Democracy Now! drove down a dirt road, got caught in the mud, had to push, and bumped into an activist from the nearby city of Cologne, Germany, at the entrance to the remaining forest. Former Irish president and climate justice advocate Mary Robinson urges divestment

As the New York region marks the first anniversary of Superstorm Sandy, hurricane-strength winds are battering northern Europe today. At least a dozen people have already been killed across Britain, Germany, the Netherlands, Denmark, and France. Amidst an increase in extreme weather and unseasonably powerful storms, Democracy Now! takes a look at the movement to confront climate chaos with Mary Robinson, former Irish president and U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights. She now heads the Mary Robinson Foundation -- Climate Justice, where her efforts include campaigning for the divestment from fossil fuels. "We can no longer invest in companies that are part of the problem of the climate shocks we’re suffering from," Robinson says. "To me it’s a little bit like the energy behind the anti-apartheid movement when I was a student. We were involved because we saw the injustice of it. There’s an injustice in continuing to invest in fossil fuel companies that are part of the problem."

Moved by her pain, he rushed her to a South Vietnamese hospital. Kim Phuc was born and raised in the village of Trang Bang, 30 minutes north of Saigon. During the US War on Vietnam, the strategic Route 1 that runs through the village became the main supply road between Saigon and Phnom Penh.

  

On June 8, 1972 an American military "adviser" coordinated the napalm bombing of Kim’s village by the South Vietnamese. Nine-year-old Kim fled from a Buddhist pagoda, where she and her family had been hiding. Two of her infant cousins were murdered in the attack by Americans, and Kim was badly burned. More

The United Nations has called an emergency meeting to discuss the Horn of Africa drought, which it says has already claimed tens of thousands of lives.

Famine was declared in two regions of Somalia on Wednesday where 3.7 million people are in need of urgent humanitarian assistance.

Another 8,000,000 people need food assistance in neighboring countries including Kenya and Ethiopia. U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon calls the situation a "catastrophic combination of conflict, high food prices, and drought" and has appealed for immediate aid.

Democracy Now! goes to Nairobi to get an update from Kiki Gbeho of the U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.

This is followed by a follow-up discussion with Christian Parenti, author of Tropic of Chaos: Climate Change and the New Geography of Violence.

This was predicted long ago by people on the ground," Parenti explains. “It’s a combination of war, climate change, and very bad policy, particularly an embrace of radical free market policies by regional governments that mean the withdrawal of support for pastoralists, the type of people you saw with their dead cattle."

His audience Saturday, small and elite, had been stranded here by bad weather and were talking climate. They couldn't do much about the one, but the other was squarely in their hands. So, Lord Nicholas Stern was telling them, was the potential for mass migrations setting off mass conflict.

TROLL RESEARCH STATION, Antarctica – Policymakers met polar explorers on the boundless ice of Antarctica Monday as a U.S.-Norwegian scientific expedition came in from the cold to report on the continent's ice sheets, a potential source for a catastrophic "big melt" from global warming.

A parka-clad band of environment ministers landed in this remote corner of the icy continent on Monday, in the final days of an intense season of climate research, to learn more about how a melting Antarctica may endanger the planet.
