"Equanimity" in Buddhism with Gil Fronsdal

Adapted from a talk by Scandinavian Buddhist Gil Fronsdal, 5/29/04 (Insight Meditation Center); Ellie Askew, Ananda (Dharma Buddhist Meditation), Dhr. Seven (eds.), Wisdom Quarterly
After the bliss (piti) there's serenity, insight, and equanimity.
Finding calm and composure with practice
“Equanimity” is one of the most sublime emotions in Buddhist practice. It is the ground for wisdom and freedom and the protector of compassion and love.

Calm
The dictionary defines equanimity as being “calm and composed.” While some may think of equanimity as some kind of dry neutrality or cool aloofness, Buddhist equanimity when mature actually produces radiance and warmth of being.

The Buddha described a mind filled with equanimity as “abundant, exalted, immeasurable, without hostility and without ill-will.”

The English word “equanimity” is a translation of two different Pali language words used by the Buddha. Each represents a different aspect of equanimity.

Undisturbed
Buddhist philosophy (themindsjournal.com)
The most common Pali word translated as “equanimity” is upekkha, meaning “to look over” [or to look back on with unbiased calm]. It refers to the equanimity that arises from the power of observation, the ability to see without being caught by what we see. When well developed, such power gives rise to a great sense of peace.

Upekkha can also refer to the ease that comes from seeing a bigger picture.

Colloquially (in the common way of speaking) in India the word was sometimes used to mean “to see with patience.” We might understand this as “seeing with understanding.”

For example, when we know not to take offensive words personally, we are less likely to react to what was said. Instead, we remain at ease, we remain equanimous.

Grandmotherly love
This form of equanimity is sometimes compared to grandmotherly love. A grandmother clearly loves her grandchildren but, thanks to her experience with her own children, is less likely to be caught up in the drama of her grandchildren’s lives.

Poise
The other word often translated as equanimity is tatra-majjha-ttata, a compound made of simple Pali words. Tatra, meaning “there,” sometimes refers to “all these things.” Majjha means “middle,” and tata means “to stand or to pose.”

Balance
Put together, the word becomes “to stand in the middle of all this.” As a form of equanimity, “being in the middle” refers to balance, to remaining centered in the middle of whatever is happening.

This balance comes from inner strength or stability. The strong presence of inner calm, well-being, confidence, vitality, or integrity can keep us upright, like a ballast keeps a ship upright in strong winds. As inner strength develops, equanimity follows.

Equanimity is a protection from the “Eight Worldly Winds”:
  1. praise
  2. and blame
  3. success
  4. and failure
  5. pleasure
  6. and pain
  7. fame
  8. and disrepute.
The Issue at Hand (Gil Fronsdal)
Becoming attached to or excessively elated with success, praise, fame, or pleasure can be a set-up for suffering when the winds of life change direction.

For example, success can be wonderful, but if it leads to arrogance, we have more to lose in future challenges.

Becoming personally invested in praise can tend toward conceit. Identifying with failure, we may feel incompetent or inadequate.

Reacting to pain, we may become discouraged. If we understand or feel that our sense of inner well-being is independent of the Eight Worldly Winds, we are more likely to remain on an even keel in their midst.

One approach to developing equanimity is to cultivate the qualities of mind that support it. Seven mental qualities support the development of equanimity.

1. The first support is virtue (sila) or integrity. When we live and act with integrity, we feel confident about our actions and words, which results in the equanimity of blamelessness. The ancient Buddhist texts speak of being able to go into any assembly of people and feel good and blameless.

2. The second support for equanimity is the sense of assurance that comes from confidence (faith). While any kind of faith can provide equanimity, faith grounded in wisdom is especially powerful. The Pali word for faith, saddha, is also translated as "conviction" or "confidence."

If we have confidence, for example, in our ability to engage in a spiritual practice, then we are more likely to meet its challenges with equanimity.

3. The third support is a well-developed mind. Much as we might develop physical strength, balance, and stability of the body in a gym, so too can we develop strength, balance, and stability of the mind.

This is done through practices that cultivate calm, concentration, and mindfulness. When the mind is calm, we are less likely to be blown about by the Eight Worldly Winds.

4.
The fourth support is a sense of well-being. We do not need to leave well-being to chance. In Buddhism, it is considered appropriate and helpful to cultivate and enhance our well-being. We often overlook the well-being that is easily available in daily life. Even taking time to enjoy one’s tea or the sunset can be a training in well-being.

Then there was Wisdom (Sophia/Prajna)
5.
The fifth support for equanimity is understanding or wisdom. Wisdom is an important factor in learning to have an accepting awareness, to be present for whatever is happening without the mind or heart contracting or resisting.

Wisdom can teach us to separate people’s actions from who they are. We can agree or disagree with their actions but remain balanced in our relationship with them. We can also understand that our own thoughts and impulses are the result of impersonal conditions.

By not taking them so personally, we are more likely to stay at ease with their arising.

Another way wisdom supports equanimity is in understanding that people are responsible for their own decisions, which helps us to find equanimity in the face of other people’s suffering. We can wish the best for them, but we avoid being buffeted by a false sense of responsibility for their well-being.

One of the most powerful ways to use wisdom to facilitate equanimity is to be mindful of when equanimity is absent. Honest awareness of what makes us imbalanced helps us to learn how to find balance.

6. The sixth support is insight, a deep seeing into the nature of things as they are. One of the primary insights is the nature of impermanence. In the deepest forms of this insight, we see that things change so quickly that we can’t hold onto anything, and eventually the mind lets go of clinging.

Letting go brings equanimity; the greater the letting go, the deeper the equanimity.

7. The final support is freedom, which comes as we begin to let go of our reactive tendencies. We can get a taste of what this means by noticing areas in which we were once reactive but are no longer.

For example, some issues that upset us when we were teenagers prompt no reaction at all now that we are adults. In Buddhist practice, we work to expand the range of life experiences in which we are free.

Twofold equanimity
The Dhammapada (Gil Frondal)
These two forms of equanimity -- the one that comes from the power of observation and the one that comes from inner balance -- come together in mindfulness practice.

As mindfulness becomes stronger, so does our equanimity. We see with greater independence and freedom. At the same time, equanimity becomes an inner strength that keeps us balanced in middle of all that is. Source

Money Man: Liver is hardest working organ

Drew CanoleNatural Liver Reset (organifishop.com)Ananda, Crystal Q. (eds.), Wisdom Quarterly

How rich is Drew Canole?
Know that amped up Organifi Guy? The bug-eyed Mighty Beard.

He says it's cool to make money by being spiritual.

He also says the support of our livers with this potent blend of ingredients from modern science and ancient Ayurveda is the way to go. He sells products, and this sounds like a good one.

I'm here to pump ya up: Liver Reset
Wake up wishing there were more energy available to bounce out of bed? Is digestion just not running as smoothly as it once was? Our hardest-working organ might be at the root of it all.

The good news is the ingredients found in Organifi liver reset are designed by Mother Nature to help flush toxins from our liver.

A discovery made by an ancient Greek physician -- who called this plant “the best remedy” against a wide range of ailments, including liver health [1].

What if Nature had the answer?
Its toxin-fighting power was validated by experts at Cambridge University [3], the world’s leading research institution — ranked ahead of Harvard, Stanford, and others. It works by helping our body deal with a dangerous class of toxins present in many foods (including some organic ones!)

Our water supply (bottled water, too), polluted air, even our homes contribute to the need to detoxify. Why? According to reports, there are over 80,000 chemicals being actively used in our world today [4].  And most have NOT been adequately tested for their effects on human health.

As a result, fat and toxicity begin to build up in this organ, setting the stage for a wide range of health problems.

Add milk thistle (silymarin), artichoke root...
Most liver support protocols miss the number one most important factor needed for detoxification. While studying the impact the modern world has on our livers, Organifi learned about a critical process it calls the “deep liver detox.”

This is also known by researchers as “the conjugation pathway” — and it’s essentially where our liver attaches to an intermediate molecule to the toxin. It does this in order to render it less harmful. The problem is most people are bombarded with too many toxins.

There's not enough support for deep liver detox to ever be completed.

Supplements
Buy my products, Man.
Most liver supplements and “cleanses” are not potent enough to fully activate this process. So the toxins and fat continue to build up in the liver — until they reach unhealthy and potentially hazardous levels.

By the time Organifi learned about the toxins building up in our livers, it had already created some of the finest adaptogenic superfood blends on earth.

With this new understanding, it was clear there was more work to do. So the Organifi team of nutritional researchers jumped on this urgent problem — pushing develop a process for extracting the most potent liver support nutrients in existence.

They wanted a formula that met three critical criteria:
  1. Incorporates ancient and time-tested plants for liver support
  2. Backed by credible research institutions
  3. Has the optimum purity, potency, and ratios needed for "deep liver detox"... More

Converting VW Bug to electric car in a day

VW Beetle converted to electric in a day
(Electric Classic Cars, 1/4/21) [The future is looking bleak. We're being led from one type of pollution to another, from the visible smoke and gagging to invisible electromagnetic fields (EMFs) and cancers. I think we'd prefer carbon-based toxins to weird and unfamiliar ones affecting this body electric. But no one dare question the insanity of carbon credits and paying for the "right" to pollute. Hey, but Das Kapital, that's capitalism for you.]

Hey, Man, we love Nature. Go electric.
ECC managed to convert this classic VW Beetle to electric in a day using our bolt-in conversion kit. In the future, everyone will be forced to do this.

[And when that day comes, we'll have MORE carbon pollution than we do now due to how electricity is generated. It could have been wind and solar, but it was coal, and no one said anything. There will be more environmental damage and war to exploit poor nations through "resource extraction." There will be more degradation due to clear cutting and pit mining. Electric is not the solution, and Tesla is not the way to go. But we get no choice. The choosers have already chosen, and we're just being strung along to follow and even be advocates for disaster.]

I really like you, Hillary. And if Bill doesn't mind, come back to my hotel to sign some papers.
That's what I'm talking about, Vlad! Let's get this Cold War back on for our economies.
Look, Mr. Putin, take Crimea. It's historically yours. We have nothing to do with it. - Really?
They're setting you up, Vladdy. First Crimea then you take back Ukraine then they call you Hitler.

How to spot propaganda and disinfo on NPR

Scott Simon, Weekend Edition Saturday, NPR.org, March 5, 2022; Eds., Wisdom Quarterly
Julia, could you believe this is NPR talking about others? - I can't believe it, Winston.

Supported by NPR and the U.S. War Dept.
Listening to NPR has really become a slog of maneuvering through bias, distortions, deceptions, and lies in support of government, Big Pharma, the military-industrial complex, and the status quo.

"Far from radical, 'National Propaganda Radio' has become all about fitting in, prospering, growing, supporting mainstream politicians, giving the 'opposition' a voice and concessions so they'll listen, too, We promote alcohol, sports, and S.A.D. (Standard American Diet) food. We may be pro-Israel, but we don't wear it on our sleeve. We'll give lip service to anyone who's in apparent opposition as well -- unless they're actually radicals. We're sellouts who want to be mainstream centrists, not progressives," apologists for NPR might say. After all, "we live in an age of misinformation," NPR's Ron Elving says.

It's not bad when we do it
Here's how to spot disinformation and propaganda coming out of a breaking story such as Ukraine or the COVID plandemic. NPR propagandist Scott Simon speaks with Harvard University's Joan Donovan about the manipulation of videos and images from the Russia-Ukraine conflict on social media and how to identify "propaganda," clever disinformation, and bumbling misinformation.

The comedian president of Ukraine (BBC)

The comedian who would be president
(BBC News, 2/7/19) Polls suggest Volodymyr Zelenskiy, a comedian with no actual prior political experience (but with pretend experience), has become one of the frontrunners in Ukraine's presidential election.

His campaign is blurring the line between fact and fiction, as he stars in a hit TV series in which he plays a teacher who unexpectedly becomes president.

The Ukraine Nazis the media won't mention

Some recent polls even put Mr. Zelenskiy ahead of actual President Petro Poroshenko, as well as opposition leader and former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko, for the vote scheduled to begin with a first round on March 31, 2019.

However, there are some important differences between Mr. Zelenskiy and the TV character he plays, as BBC Ukraine Correspondent Jonah Fisher reports.

Late Night with Seth Meyers' centrism (TV)

Reps "befuddled by a pres who’s likable"
Good gosh, Seth Meyers is funny but what an Establishment tool. What the h has happened? It's like the Right is right about mainstream media bias. We live in bubbles, only hearing our own side, only tuning in to our own stations. Branch out. Parochialism is a dangerous thing.

In the beginning, the Buddha made a rule that all monastics (monks and nuns) be wandering ascetics, leaving where they were born and grew up, not staying at any one place for long. The purpose of this was to see that groups see things differently. There's isn't just one right way. Things aren't only done in one way.

We've lost a Left. All we have presented to us is a "nominal left" (in name only) presented to us as the mainstream which cannot be argued with or we'll be cancelled. It has split the country. We didn't like it when conservatives ruled. How is anyone going to like liberals behaving the way they did?

Joe warns Vlad "has no idea what's coming," Greene and Boebert Heckle SOTU
(Late Night with Seth Meyers, 3/2/22) Seth Meyers takes a closer look at President Biden using his first State of the Union address to condemn President Putin's incursion into Ukraine and warn him that he has no idea what the U.S. and its allies will do next.

Conquering Ukraine with "Seinfeld" (comedy)

Seinfeld: Kramer and Newman play "Risk" and fight over Ukraine
(Seinfeld via Vondur, 1/30/16) "What's that?" asks George. "Oh, it's 'Risk,'" answers Jerry. "It's a game of world domination being played by two guys who can barely run their own lives." Even then, in Seinfeld's heyday, "The Ukraine," which is what people called it, was a touchy subject -- particularly on the subway with any Ukrainians standing around.

He's not the tallest or handsomest or funniest
It was a "road apple" waiting to be smashed. Now it has a short, Jewish comedian for president in one Vladimir Zelenski (a.k.a. Volodymyr Zelenskyy) which the mainstream media is trying to convince us is "hot." Not. His cover girl wife, Olena Zelenska, is attractive like Trump's arm charm with the ability to speak flawless English.

From TV comedian to Ukraine's leader

Ukrainian First Lady Olena Zelenska's heart-warming message amid trouble, says will not panic or flee
(India Today, March 1st, 2022) As Ukraine is fighting invading Russian troops, a message from Ukraine's First Lady Olena Zelenska shared a heartwarming post days after her husband, Ukraine's president, and their family decided to return to the capital city of Kyiv (Kiev). In a video message released on Friday, Zelenskyy stated that Russia had designated him as "target number one" and his family as "target number two." Olena offered her opinions on the continuing battle in a new Instagram post on Friday: "I shall not be in a state of panic or weeping. I'll be composed and certain. My kids are staring at me. I'll be right next to them. And right next to my hubby. And with you," Ukraine's first lady wrote beside a photo of the Ukrainian flag on Instagram.

Rape in prison is real, brags gay F. Johnson

MSNBC/Aaron W; L. David; Pfc. Sandoval, Ashley Wells, Seth Auberon (eds.), Wisdom Quarterly

Fleece Johnson, homosexual "Booty" rapist
Meet self-proclaimed "Booty Warrior" Fleece Johnson. Males make light of it, but succumbing to unwelcome sexual advances -- culminating in violent rape -- in prison, the workplace, home, or in public is a serious and life-altering event tantamount to any assault but worse.

Worse? Rape is the second most traumatic injury one could suffer, death being the first. Yet, males laugh and joke about it incessantly, a signal of their deep-seated fear and discomfort with this taboo. Is it a laughing matter? It seems to be:

Most male-on-male sexual assaults, particularly those in the U.S. military, go unreported out of shame and discomfort with our distorted and outmoded views on sex and masculinity.

Many of us are told it doesn't really happen in prison when, in fact, it seems to be all that happens -- along with drug use, feces spreading, boredom, gambling, depression, and psychosis brought on from modern torture methods.

I can use my dugout to meditate in peace.
It'll be covered by a plastic roof and sport a built-in wood stove. But if I only have clay as my building material to make this complete underground shelter, how can I do it?

Let's ask Bushcraft Solo about her earth hut with fireplace, a survival shelter with fireplace in the earth that produced a warm shelter out of bamboo and clay.

What if what we want is a complete earth lodge cabin with building instructions? Bushcraft Solo offers a warm survival shelter, with mud roof and fireplace out of clay.
