"Mind": vedana, sanna, sankhara, vinnana. |
The MIND itself has no color, shape, or form, but it has energy. It is our duty to LET GO of and abandon the conditioned, proliferating mind.
But the mind of present knowing, that which concentrates on the Buddha [the Awakened], listens to Dhamma [the Teaching that leads to awakening], and reflects on its meaning, having been clearly observed, that true mind should be developed.
In this case to "develop" means to give care and attention to establishing it in peace.
Peace comes by countering the out-going stream of mentality and penetrating this present knowing.
- [In Buddhism, "mind" is defined as feeling (sensation), perceptions (impressions), mental formations (such as volitions), and consciousness, as distinct from form, which is the Four Great Elements (maha-dhatus), which are qualities of matter exhibited by kalapas or particles. Consciousness is a process, not a thing, involving moments and concomitant factor or cittas and cetasikas. The Buddha goes into great detail to outline a means for practitioners of the Dhamma to directly perceive these things -- not take them on faith or learning -- and thereby verify that all things and all forms of existence share Three Universal Characteristics: They are impermanent, unsatisfactory, and impersonal. See the Abhidhamma for these details and the practice that leads to knowing-and-seeing and verifying them for oneself.]
