LA's Wasted Youth "Problem Child"

LYRICS: "Problem Child"
No mind, doesn't think at all/ Problem child is no one's friend/ Damn that kid, always in a fight/ Problem child just hates life/ Lives a life in a state of fear/ Has a knife that he keeps near// He's not the one that you wanna meet/ You don't want to see him on the street/Problem child just hates this world// When he was five years old/ His mom burned his hand on the stove/ Problem child never went to school/ He just went out and broke all the rules/ Problem child, was always one/ Stupid kid just wants to die// He's not the one that you wanna meet/ You don't want to see him on the street/ Problem child's got a brand new gun/ And he's looking for you

(Atomic Video Jukebox, 5/10/21) Wasted Youth performs "Problem Child" back in the day of LA's punk rock scene. We first heard Wasted Youth on Rodney Bingenheimer's KROQ FM show "Rodney on the ROQ" in 1981 and immediately went out and bought their album, Reagan's In, and wore it out over time.

We first saw them in early 1982 at the Hollywood Palladium when they played with TSOL, Adolescents, Social Distortion, Youth Brigade, and others. It was an amazing show with lots of stage diving before venues banned that. AVJ made this video from live footage of the band as well as post gig footage at Oki Dogs in LA all shot by Dave Markey.

The footage is married with digital audio from the album. David Markey, the drummer of Sin 34, was very ambitious and always carried a movie camera and reels film with him back then. From the footage he shot, he made some short films and the punkumentary The SLOG Movie featuring a number of SoCal bands including his own Sin 34. This video uses his footage shot for the slog movie.

LYRICS: "We Were On Heroin" I need it, must have it/ Kill and steal, fight to get it/ I need it, must have it/ Holes in my arms mean nothing/ I need it, must have it/ I'll lose everything I own/ Just to buy it, just to have it/ I don't care if I die/ Gotta have it to survive/ My arm's decaying day by day/ My veins are collapsing, doctors say/ I need it, must have it/ Shoot it up in my arm/ I need it, must have it/ I won't sleep day or night/ Till I get it, till I shoot it/ Take the money from my mom/ Just to buy it, just to have it/ Who cares about this world?/ Everything seems so blurred/ I don't care if I die/ Well, I don't care if I die/ I need it, must have it/ I need it, must have it/ I need it, must have it/ I need it, heroin!

COMMENTS
  • Tim Gallegos: I was there. I just quit Wasted Youth to join Bad Religion. I played bass for both bandz.
  • apebrain07: I was at this gig!
  • Keith Bohanan: I remember this night. Fun stuff.
  • soundofone: OH SHIT! I never thought I'd see footage with this lineup outside of The Slog Movie! I have a scanned Wasted Youth/Dayglo Abortions flyer that might be for this show.
  • scoot: Didn't Danny [the singer] leave [the band] in '83? This couldn't be '85, or am I wrong?
  • Tom T: I was at this show.
  • Jason Misfit: Danny and Chett, I heard, have some past beef that was never resolved, From what Rudy (Stains) told me...
  • Timothy Gallegos: I hope Tim Gallegos was on bass.....
  • nanotek412: Is it just me, or is there no sound?
  • gigi puig: Wait a minute. Here I saw another Wasted Youth '85 show on YouTube at the Olympic Auditorium in DTLA with a different singer and a whole different lineup! Maybe that footage is from '87. Can someone clarify cause I'm confused.
  • Crossover93: What happened to Danny?
  • m Ldf: Oh shit. This is horrible, lol. Was Danny Spira really that horrible live? It sounds like a random drunk woke up in the gutter, wandered in off the street looking for 7-11 nachos, and grabbed the mic by accident.
  • John Pope: Scranny.
