LA’s World Naked Bike Ride 2026 (photos)

A guide to LA’s World Naked Bike Ride 2026: Gear up, Los Angeles

| Is it shameful to see me naked? |
For those brave enough to let it all hang out, get ready for the clothing-optional World Naked Bike Ride 2026 Los Angeles (WNBRLA).
The head-turning bike fest—a global grassroots movement that began in 2004—is taking over L.A. with its bare-as-you-dare dress code to fight “indecent exposure to cars.”
For those able to look past the nudity, nakedness, and eye-popping dangly bits, this 19th annual bike ride’s primary (stated) goal is to advocate for sustainable energy and environmentally responsible living to combat our current car-driven society. That and to bring joy back to transportation via cycling. (Think CicLAvia but with more butts).

.
| I'm thinking of riding, but I feel fat! |
But make no mistake: The nudity is a major part of the ride and is in itself a celebration of body positivity, strength, respect and acceptance for every human being becoming better than ever looks wise.
- When is the WNBR 2026 in LA? The ride takes place Saturday, June 27, 2026. There will be two rides, in fact, the first at 10:00 am and the second at 2:00 pm.
- Where does the ride take place? For the safety of its riders, WNBR doesn’t share the exact details of its routes until the week before the event on Instagram and Facebook.

In keeping with the event’s anti-car sentiment, organizers usually suggest leaving all cars behind—so wearing clothes to start and taking public transit is highly encouraged. But there will be parking for riders at the nearby Mangrove Parking Lot (414 E Temple St.) for $10, starting at 8:00 am.
Look for the “WNBR–LA General Parking” sign. Whether driving or cycling over, organizers ask that cyclist NOT undress until at the staging area.

The second ride is at 2:00 pm and is about 7 miles long. This is the harder of the two rides, as the route goes over hills. Both go past DTLA landmarks and include photo ops and water stops.
Do I need to pre-register? All participants can register in person on the day of the event and get a debriefing on this year’s rules. Or pre-register by emailing wnbr.losangeles@gmail.com or via PayPal or Patreon).

Even if pre-registering, participants will need to check in on the day of the event to pick up a wristband.

WNBRLA does encourage helmets and full-body SPF sunblock, as well as body paint and other creative expression—but strictly prohibits provocative fetish gear and genital jewelry and accessories. Also: no erections.
So how is this legal?
Public nudity IS legal—sort of. Baring a nude body in a lewd manner that clearly has sexual or offensive intentions is illegal, however. Hence WNBRLA’s rules.

What if I don’t have a bike?
In the past, WNBRLA has suggested DTLA Bikes or Just Ride L.A. for bike rentals. Or check out Time Out’s list of the best bike shops in L.A. to purchase one.
Participants can also skate, scooter, or ride a unicycle or tricycle—any human-powered vehicle—but keep in mind that the route will go both uphill and downhill. More

LA Chinatown Hungry Ghost Festival

The REAL Hungry Ghost Festival is on September 5 or 6, 2025. Here's why

| Are hungry ghosts evil demons? No, those are hellions. Ghosts are the departed. |
![]() |
| The dearly departed are still here. |
The seventh month, beginning on August 23, 2025, is known as Ghost Month. During this period, it is believed that the Gates of Hell and Heaven open, allowing restless spirits to enter the human world.
However, not all of these spirits are “hungry ghosts” (petas or pretas). The term usually refers to those who passed away tragically or without proper funerary rituals, while many others are thought to simply visit their loved ones.

| Addiction is entrance to Realm of Hungry Ghosts |
Tradition holds that offerings are made to appease these spirits, but most people only make offerings on the first day of Ghost Month and then forget.
As the days pass, the neglected spirits are said to grow hungrier and angrier. By the 15th day, their hunger supposedly reaches its peak, which is why this day is considered the Hungry Ghost Festival.
This explains why offerings on the 15th day are so important. The Hungry Ghost Festival, then, is not the entire month but just that one crucial day.
For 2025, this falls on September 6, the 15th day of Ghost Month. Some groups, particularly Chinese Cantonese-speaking communities, choose to make offerings on the 14th instead.
Are WE in the Hungry Ghost Realm?
Due to karma, we are all reborn
This is partly because the number four sounds like “death” in Cantonese and Mandarin, making the 14th symbolically significant. Another explanation comes from old timekeeping systems where the hours from 11:00 pm to 1:00 am spanned two days, meaning some regarded the 14th as the proper day.
How can I transfer merit to benefit the dead?
![]() |
| The possibility of merit transfer became widely known by the story Mulian Rescues His Mother |
.
![]() |
| There are many Buddhist hells. |
The Buddhist practitioner's merit, resulting from wholesome deeds, is transferred to deceased relatives (the grateful dead), to deities (devas), or to ALL sentient beings.
Such a "transfer" is done ritually and mentally, and it is believed that the recipient (the ghost, the deceased person) can often receive this merit, if that recipient rejoices in the meritorious acts of the person doing the transferring.
In Buddhism, merit transfer (sending beneficial karma) is seen as a much better alternative to mourning.

| Pouring overflowing water in ceremony |
[How can it work? Everyone's karma is one's own. The giver generates skillful karma by giving with the intention to give, which gives the recipient the chance to share in that good karma by rejoicing (pattanumo) over such kindness, compassion, and giving (dana).] More: Transfer of merit

Ohtani Day, Nisei Week, LA part of Japan?

![]() |
| Los Angeles is up on the right, way up |
![]() |
| LA, like Japan, is in the ring of fire quake zone |
Is there still a remnant population of railroad builders and Zen practitioners (Shinto worshippers) in that Central California concentration camp (Manzanar) from The "Good" War (WWII) when Japanese Americans were rounded up, interned, and deprived of earnings and property, dignity and freedom, due process and reparations. Forty thousand fans tried their best, stood in line for a workday, traffic jammed up DTLA to get to Chavez Ravine, and had a bumper party at this devotional tribute to the god/kami that is Ohtani.
Nisei Week, during Japan Month, Los Angeles

| Made in Japan: Not So Ape (shop now) |
Nisei means "second generation" in Japanese, describing the first American-born Japanese, a group the seven-day festival was originally meant to attract.
Though named for the Nisei generation, Nisei Week is no longer targeted at Niseis, nor is the festival still contained within a week.
| It's time to be cool and go Everyday Zen. |
Festivities are held over one month, though the main attractions are held during the primary two weekends of the festival in the summer heat of mid-August.
Nisei Week draws tens of thousands of participants each year from the Japanese community and Southern California area, mostly to its Grand Parade and specialized festivals. More
