Julian Assange's "The World Tomorrow" (video)

, May 15, 2012

The fifth episode of The World Tomorrow takes us to the very heart of America's "war on terror": Guantanamo Bay.

In this episode Julian Assange speaks with Moazzam Begg, a former Gitmo prisoner and a human rights campaigner fighting for those still trapped behind the wire, and Asim Qureshi, a former corporate lawyer whose human rights organization Cageprisoners Ltd exists solely to raise awareness of the plight of prisoners who remain imprisoned in Guantanamo Bay.

Former President George W. Bush, V.P. Dick Cheney, Donald Rumsfeld, and other Bush Administration officials were found guilty in court of war crimes in Malaysia.

Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld found guilty
Digital Journal
An international tribunal has found Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, and their legal advisers, Alberto Gonzales, David Addington, William Haynes, Jay Bybee, and John Yoo guilty of the crimes of conspiracy to allow torture in Guantanamo Bay, Bagram, and Abu Ghraib.

The tribunal was organized by the Kuala Lumpur Foundation to Criminalize War (KLFCW), a non-governmental organization (NGO) established under the laws of Malaysia.
.
The court heard testimony from a number of victims, including Abbas Abid, who had his fingernails removed by pliers, Ali Shalal, who was electrocuted and hanged on a wall, and Jameelah Abbas Hameedi, who was stripped and beaten. More

Prosecuting Bush for Murder in US
Vincent Bugliosi, Esq. (Huff Post)
George Bush lied to the American public in starting his war with Iraq is that the liberal columnists who have accused him of doing this merely make this point, and then go on to the next paragraph in their columns. Only very infrequently does a columnist add that because of it Bush should be impeached. If the charges are true, of course Bush should have been impeached, convicted, and removed from office. That's almost too self-evident to state. But he deserves much more than impeachment. I mean, in America, we apparently impeach presidents for having consensual sex outside of marriage and trying to cover it up. More

US: "America [Does] Torture"

“The greatest purveyor of violence in the world today -- my own government.” -- Martin Luther King, Jr. quotes

Photos to detail US abuse in Iraq, Afghanistan (AP)
The White House vowed today that it will not be distracted by an upcoming disclosure sure to gain attention at home and abroad: hundreds of photos showing U.S. personnel alleged-ly [torturing] prisoners in Iraq and Afghanistan in the post-Sept. 11th environment [that they used as a pretext to violate domestic laws and international treaty agreements]. » Full Story

Where does the US torture?

  • Abu-Ghraib US torture admissions with photos
  • Gitmo (Guantanamo Bay, Cuba)
  • Los Angeles Men's Jail (according to ACLU)
  • Secret detention centers around the world
  • "Extraordinary rendition" centers for the CIA, NSA, FBI...

Interestingly, for all the Americans that condone and encourage American torture, none of the people tortured at these sites are convicted of anything first. This is torture of innocents (who have not yet or likely will ever be proven guilty of anything). Torture is chronic, acute, and well documented in:

  • US prisons (particularly for political prisoners)

Prison: Riot in California

Winston Churchill memorably said "the civilization of a society can be judged by the way it treats its prisoners."

"Guards fire rounds during fatal prison riot"
Los Angeles Times (3/19/09)

Prison guards fired live rounds, pepper spray and rubber bullets to quell a riot at Kern Valley State Prison in which one inmate was stabbed to death and 17 others injured, state corrections officials disclosed Thursday.
.
The deadly melee in the maximum-security section of the overcrowded prison involved 38 inmates, four of whom suffered bullet wounds after guards moved in to contain the riot that began at 3:20 p.m. Wednesday, the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation reported.

The riot occurred in the general population yard of Kern Valley's Facility B at the prison 180 miles north of Los Angeles. Four inmate-made weapons were recovered from the scene, reported Lt. Xavier Cano of the prison's public information office.

"Correctional officers used lethal munitions, pepper spray and multiple direct impact rubber rounds to quell the incident. A correctional officer also discharged five rounds from the mini-14 rifle," Cano's statement said, referring to a military-style rifle used in some prisons. More>>
